Chapter 56

EDDIE

As the days passed since I’d murdered David Devers, I breathed a little easier.

No news was always good news in a situation like this—not that I’d ever been in this exact situation. And while his murder was all over the local news, the cops had never found their way to me.

And I hadn’t seen April interviewed on local television yet, which was a good sign. The last thing you want is an interview to go wrong and suddenly have the public against you. That would be a disaster.

I wasn’t coordinating with April, so I couldn’t be sure, but I imagined she was holding her own with the LAPD. I’d picked a good partner to go in cahoots with.

Unfortunately, something else had been gnawing at me.

The lunch with Lucy and the “unexpected” visit by Nia felt less and less like a coincidence.

Something was up, and I wasn’t just going to sit by twiddling my thumbs. My gut told me it was unrelated to David Devers, but I couldn’t be sure.

I decided to do something I hadn’t yet done in my marriage. I was going to install one of my beloved bugs in our house.

Lucy was very close to both of her parents, and if something was indeed up, there’s no way she could keep it from them. And now my bug would be there to record the conversation. Well, at least Lucy’s end of the conversation.

On Monday, four days after David Dever’s murder, I installed two bugs in our house. One in our bedroom and one in the family/living room.

If Lucy had something planned, I was going to know about it.
