Chapter 90
APRIL
“Detective Abbott speaking.”
“Hello, Detective, this is April Devers.”
“Hi, April. How are you doing?”
“You know. Not great. Still mourning my husband.”
“I’m sure it’s tough. Hopefully, over time, it will get easier.”
“Thanks. Have you guys made any progress? Any suspects?”
“As you know, we aren’t allowed to talk to the general public about our current cases.”
“I’m not the general public.”
“You didn’t let me finish.”
“I’m sorry, Detective.”
“We aren’t allowed to talk to the general public, but since you’re the spouse of the deceased, we’ll be a little more freewheeling with you. Just a little bit, though.”
“Thanks.”
“No, we don’t have any further suspects at this point. I’m sorry if you were expecting more.”
Actually, I was just fine with things staying as they were. Even if they arrested the wrong man, that might lead them to investigate my husband more, and maybe they’d find something that made me look bad. No suspects and no arrests were A-OK with me.
“No, I wasn’t expecting anything. I just figured I’d reach out and ask.”
“Well, thanks for calling. Is there anything else?”
“I guess there is one more thing. I was considering taking a little vacation. After all I’ve been through, I figured it could do me some good.”
“No doubt it would. Did you have a question?”
“I just wanted to run it by you, and make sure it’s okay.”
“Is what okay?”
“Me taking a vacation. With the investigation still going on and all.”
“Of course it’s okay, April. As I told you almost a month ago, you’re no longer considered a suspect. You can stamp that passport as many times as you want.”
“Thank you so much, Detective Abbott. I think I will go stamp that passport a few times.”
“Stamp away.”
