Chapter 100
APRIL
Lucy had lost her water privileges.
I’d zapped her within a split second of her screaming, so there’s no way a neighbor heard it, but that didn’t matter. She’d disobeyed me. No more water.
Instead, I was going to do some talking. And she wasn’t going to like what I had to say.
After I locked the back door and sat back in the front, I turned toward her.
“So, you’re probably wondering why you’re here, Lucy.
Let me tell you. This will be your last night on earth, so I don’t mind pontificating a little bit.
Well, technically, that’s not exactly true.
We will probably leave here after midnight, so you will get to live a few minutes of tomorrow.
Lucky you. In about an hour, we will be leaving this garage and heading to your final destination: a watery grave.
Before we leave, however, I will be texting your parents.
You will be admitting to Eddie’s murder, and you’ll tell them that you just couldn’t live with yourself anymore.
That’s really going to crush them, isn't it? So sad. They were probably very nice parents. Maybe I’ll anonymously send them a fruitcake to help with the grieving.
Okay, back to the issue at hand. You might be wondering how I’m going to text them. Your phone is surely locked.”
I leaned into the back seat and whispered in Lucy’s ear.
“Your password is 357753. You know how I know? Because when you were at my coffee shop, I asked you to turn your phone back on so I could make sure I wasn’t still being recorded. Well, guess what? That was just a ruse, so I could look down and memorize your password. Let’s see if I got it right.”
I took her phone out of my pocket and typed in 357753. The phone came to life.
“Would you look at that!” I said, and looked in Lucy’s direction. She closed her eyes and swiveled her head to avoid making eye contact.
She was a defeated woman.
And I loved it.
The night dragged on until, eventually, I looked at my phone, and it was 11:48. We were close.
“We’ll be getting out of here soon, Lucy. Your watery grave awaits.”
