Chapter 102
APRIL
Ipressed the garage door opener on the visor.
I backed out of Lucy’s garage and shut the garage door when I was out in the driveway. I was wearing her sweater, and had found a hat on the passenger seat, which I put on as well, just in case any cameras picked us up.
It was now past midnight and very dark out, so to the cameras I’d look very much like Lucy Sykes, wearing her hat and sweater. Plus, I was the only one in the car as far as they knew.
I looked back at Lucy and started heading toward Malibu.
I drove a few miles below the speed limit on my way to our destination. One of the few things that could fuck up my plan was to be pulled over. That would be game, set, and match for yours truly.
If that happened, I’d drive both Lucy and me off the cliff, Thelma and Louise-style. But I wasn’t going to be pulled over, so it would only be Lucy going over that cliff.
That’s right. I was going to send Lucy and this car off the cliffs north of Malibu. And I’m not talking about the little bluffs close to the water. I’m talking about the big cliffs hundreds of feet above the Pacific Ocean.
I made my way to the Pacific Coast Highway without seeing a police officer.
I headed north on the PCH. I had one more stop to make, but this one would only take a few seconds.
About a mile up the PCH, I pulled into one of the many little inlets that hugged the ocean.
During the day, people would park in these inlets and admire the view of the Pacific.
At one a.m., there was no one to be seen.
I grabbed my laptop from the tote bag I’d brought, walked the ten feet to the end of the cliff, and threw it into the unrelenting ocean below.
That was easy. No more laptop for the LAPD to check.
I looked back at Lucy.
“Don’t worry, you’re the next stop.”
