Chapter 12 Old Promise
Xie Fei really thought I was dead.
In the two days I lay unconscious, he had thought a lot.
He remembered two years ago, when the overall situation had just stabilized. He had believed he could give me the best of everything in the world so I wouldn't have to follow him anymore, eating bitterness and suffering hardship, wandering from place to place.
He had thought those two people walking hand in hand along the dark palace path could leave the darkness behind and walk toward a bright future.
But I had died.
Only then did he realize he had never really left that palace path.
The path remained dark, and he was the only one walking alone.
In the two years I had been gone, wars had erupted everywhere because of his disbelief that I had died like that.
He had wanted to unify the world and find my traces, so he had ignored his body and everything else, swallowing up neighboring countries.
When we met again, he had never thought of revenge against me.
But I had run away.
I had abandoned him once more.
Locked in mutual entanglement and hatred, he had believed I would die again.
I had already died in his arms once. He could not bear a second time.
Even though he hated and feared me, he had only dared to let me go through gritted teeth.
Thinking of this, my heart ached. I threw myself into his arms and whispered, "I'm sorry."
I had been wrong.
I should not have chosen such a cruel way to abandon him after saving him.
He was not the villain from the book. He was Xie Fei, the man I had spent days and nights with.
"I don't feel the love for Wen Ruo that others speak of. It's..."
He paused, seeming unable to continue.
I pressed, "What is it?"
"I want to die."
What?
I froze for a moment.
"I know about Xie Yu's special nature. I also know he likes Wen Ruo, so I deliberately locked people up to force him to rebel."
Although I had not said it out loud, Xie Fei was not an ordinary person. He had already guessed it.
When he could not find me, he gradually accepted reality and wanted to use the male lead as a blade to end his own life.
My heart felt stuffy. I said quietly, "The breath of life I struggled so hard to obtain for you must not be wasted lightly."
"Sorry," Xie Fei murmured. "If you don't want me to die, I won't die."
"I love you. Of course I want you to live."
Xie Fei buried his head in my neck and rubbed against it lightly, like a tired cat.
