Then

Would checking out my friend’s sister be considered a bad thing? I can say if it was, I’d be in huge trouble right now.

I’ve always found Violet to be pretty, but there’s something in the air that’s different. She’s not the same girl I met three years ago. She’s all grown up.

I snap myself out of whatever daydream I’m in, and my eyes land on Blake and Violet’s mom, Georgia. She’s sitting in the driver’s seat of the family’s red Dodge Durango.

Blake and I are leaning against the SUV and watching Violet come out of the Prescott family mansion.

This compound most likely cost tens of millions of dollars because of the sheer size of it.

The exterior of the place is covered in white paint with giant columns on both sides and steel blue roofing. Trees, assorted flowers, and lush landscaping overtake the front yard and entrance to the complex.

You’d think a princess lives here, and she does…but Violet’s not a princess. She’s the most beautiful angel I’ve ever seen. And she’s standing right in front of me.

Her blonde hair sits perfectly over her shoulders, framing her face like she’s a painting that belongs in The Louvre. She’s wearing a light pink crop top, ripped jeans, and a pair of white high-top Converse.

Damn, she looks so good in pink.

She has pink lipstick staining her pretty lips. I want to kiss them so badly. Sadly, that’s not going to happen. Blake would obliterate me if I did that. He’d probably do the same shit if he heard all these thoughts that have been running rampant inside my head for the past several months.

“You good, bro?” Blake asks, stopping me from fantasizing about what it would be like to be with his sister.

“Yeah, I’m fine.”

Blake turns his head in Violet’s direction. “Violet, hurry up! If we end up being late for school, I’m going to destroy you.”

“I’m coming. Calm down!” Violet calls out reluctantly.

Georgia rolls down her window. “Violet, your brother is right. Get in the car right now! I don’t need to get a call from the school today, do I?”

Violet rolls her eyes and huffs.

“Do I?” Georgia sternly repeats herself.

Georgia Prescott scares the absolute shit out of me because she’s incredibly intimidating. Georgia and her husband, Charles, own a ton of businesses in Sunset Cove. Most of them turned them into billion-dollar companies overnight.

Blake acts like his mom a lot, but I’ve gotten used to it for the most part. He’s not too bad once someone gets to know him really well.

“No, ma’am.” She struts over to the car.

I run over to meet her on the back, left side.

Blake sits down in the passenger’s seat, which leaves me no other choice than to sit in the back with Violet.

“Hi,” she says.

I wet my lips, opening the door for her. “Your chariot awaits, madame.” I extend my arm, taking her by her hand and helping her into the car.

“Why thank you, sir.”

Goddammit, my hand is sweaty now.

How am I going to get over the feelings I have for Violet? It’s becoming more of a challenge every day being in the same room as her or in close proximity to her. Now, I’m sitting next to her in her mom’s car with her brother in the front seat.

Seriously, just dig a hole and bury me inside of it now.

Once our seatbelts are secured, Georgia backs out of the driveway.

Whipping out my phone, I start a text conversation with Violet.

Me

Happy Halloween!

Violet

Why are you texting me when I’m sitting right next to you?

Me

You know your brother would kick my ass if he saw us talking to each other

Violet

Yeah, good point

Me

Are you dressing up this year?

Violet

I kind of have to since my mother throws one of the biggest Halloween parties in town every year. There’s a part of me that wants to stay in my room and pretend I don’t exist, but I can’t do that. Sometimes I already feel invisible, especially when I’m around my family

Me

Well, you’re not invisible to me

Who or what are you dressing up as?

Violet

I can’t tell you. It’s a secret

Me

Fine. I won’t tell you who I’m dressing up as then

Violet

Some things are worth the wait

Me

Oh, I’m sure they are

Violet

C’mon Gray, where’s your Halloween spirit?

Me

If I wasn’t friends with your brother, I wouldn’t be going to the Halloween party tonight. I’d be at home, watching TV and stuffing my face with candy

Violet

Ah, that sounds fun

Me

Are you being sarcastic?

Violet

No, I’m being serious

Me

Since when are you ever serious?

Violet

Oh, shut up!

Me

Make me, Prescott

Violet

Maybe I will, maybe I won’t

Me

Guess I have to wait until your maybe turns into a yes

Violet glances at the back of Blake’s head before she turns to face me for a brief moment. Eventually, she shifts her gaze towards the window.

I’m not imagining things here. She’s definitely flirting with me. Right? She has to be, but maybe I am imagining things.

If she dresses up as a devil or something tonight, I’m so screwed.
