14. Jax

Chapter 14

Jax

Me: Hey. How’s your day?

Helen: Busy. And I’m exhausted. I had a very busy Sunday.

Me: Did you enjoy your Sunday though?

Helen: It was very pleasant. The company was decent too.

Me: Well, I’m glad to hear that. *winking face emoji*

Me: What did you do for lunch?

Helen: Lunch? Shit, what time is it?

Me: 2.30. Tell me you ate!

Helen: Totally forgot. Like I said, crazy busy.

Me: You need to go get something.

Helen: I’ve got a breakfast bar in my drawer. I’ll have that.

“Jax, what are you doing here?” Helen looked up from behind her large desk, staring at me with her blue eyes before she glanced across to the three large offices that ran the length of the room, almost guiltily.

I placed her tea and the sandwich I’d picked her up on her desk. “You need to eat.”

She peaked in the bag before offering me a wide smile. “Thank you, but you didn’t need to.”

“You need to eat,” I said with more force. Suddenly a tall, dark-haired man appeared behind her, his hands pushed into his trouser pockets, highlighting the handguns holstered to his chest.

“Helen, do we have a problem?” he asked as his eyes assessed me.

She turned, looking up at him. “No, Thomas, stand down. This is Jax Cartwright.”

“Jackson. Thirty-one. Fireman, staying with Helen. Single, no kids, no criminal record, used to live in town until you were fifteen.”

“Did you do a background check on me?” I asked, my expression furrowed with confusion.

Helen laughed. “Jax, this is Thomas Lanton. My boss and a paranoid control freak who needs to know everything about everyone.”

“And that’s why you have the weapons?” I checked, pushing my hands into my pockets to mirror his stance.

He shrugged. “They make me look like a scary badass to strange men who just wander in off the street.”

“Well, maybe I wouldn’t have wandered in if Helen had taken lunch today. Is that how you treat your staff, Thomas?”

His brows furrowed and his expression turned murderous. “Helen, is that true?”

She rolled her eyes.

“You’re fired.”

“Shut up. You fire me most days. I’m not leaving.”

“Fine, but you’re taking your lunch now and finishing early for the day. And from now on, you will put lunch in your diary and you will make time for it. Do I make myself clear?”

“Yes, Boss.”

“Good, now fuck off.” He turned to leave before looking back over his shoulder at me. “I like you, Jackson.” And with that, he was gone.

“I’m never going to hear the end of this now, thank you.”

I picked up her lunch, ignoring the sarcasm in her tone. “You’re welcome. Now come on, you heard the man. Let’s go.”

My hands twitched to touch Helen as we sat outside on a bench, and I watched her eat. When she was done, she gave me that smile that destroyed me. I was still reeling from last night. I thought she’d be regret-filled this morning, but instead, she woke me with a soft kiss before she buried her face in my chest and muttered, “I’m way too old to sleep on the floor or sleep naked, but thank you for covering us up so we didn’t freeze.”

Her soft sigh brought me back to the moment.

“Let’s go shopping so we can stock up on food I can make you for lunch. I think you might need to keep up your energy.”

She pinched her bottom lip between her teeth. I leaned in close, my eyes locked on hers. “Don’t look at me like that, beautiful.”

“Mum?” Jasper’s voice made us both jump and when I looked up, he was glaring, his eyes darting between me and his mum. Shit.

“Hey, Jasper. What are you doing out of work?” she asked, trying to sound innocent as we both stood.

“I have to go away for a couple of days. I needed some supplies.” He held up a small paper bag as if to reinforce his story.

Helen’s eyes widened. “Oh, I didn’t know you were going somewhere.”

“I don’t need to tell you everything. I’m not a kid, Ma.” He sounded angry.

“Jas,” I chastised.

His head dropped before he looked back up and, despite not being around him for years, the pain in his eyes was clear to see. “Sorry. It’s just been a day. Look, I’ll text you all the details when I get there, okay?”

Before Helen could reply, he kissed her cheek, slapped me on the shoulder, and waved as he walked away, leaving us both in his wake.

I put our grocery bags on the counter and turned to find Helen staring at me. She’d not said much after we’d seen Jasper, and I presumed she was worrying about what he’d think about seeing us so physically close to each other earlier.

“You okay?” I asked, ready to talk her down from her freakout, but she surprised me, putting her handbag on the side and saying, “We didn’t get to talk much… about last night.”

“No.”

“I had no idea that orgasms felt like that. If I had, I’d have made sure I had them every day.”

I growled, surprised by how much I hated the idea of anyone else giving her that release.

She undid the first button on her black blouse as she slipped off her heels.

“I should feel bad about what we did…” She undid another button and then another, letting me catch sight of the curve of her breasts. “But I don’t. You said something yesterday about thinking about me every free minute you had…”

I leaned back against the counter, watching her with interest because she seemed different—more confident—and I couldn’t help the swell of pride that it might have something to do with me.

“Well,” she continued. “Today, that’s been me. I didn’t eat because I couldn’t stop thinking about you. I couldn’t stop thinking about more time with you… taking things further.”

“Oh, yeah?”

Her mouth turned up at the corners.

“What did you have in mind?”

She shrugged, moving to flick the kettle on. “You want tea?”

“Tea?” I gasped, knowing she was playing me. “You can’t talk about taking things further and then offer me tea.”

“It’s the middle of the afternoon, Jax. Are you suggesting we go to bed and mess around for the rest of the day?” God, that smile.

My now hard cock twitched his agreement with the idea. “I mean, that’s one way to spend the afternoon.”

She opened the cupboard, reaching for two cups as I ogled her arse in the knee-length skirt she wore.

When she turned back around, she stared me dead in the eye as she undid the next two buttons on her shirt, fully exposing her large breasts.

“I’ve never done that… messed about all afternoon. In fact, I’ve never messed about.”

I quirked my brow. “No?”

She shook her head, giving me that innocent look that I desperately wanted to corrupt. “What would it involve?”

“Well.” I moved to stand in front of her, caging her in with my hands on either side of the counter. “I think, from what I understand, there would be some of this.”

I nuzzled into the side of her neck, pressing open-mouthed kisses along it, until she whispered my name and raked her fingers through my hair as the kettle bubbled away in the background.

“And what else?” Her voice was low and soft.

I reached between us, undoing the rest of the buttons on her shirt, smiling when I saw her black bra fastened at the front. I didn’t hesitate, opening it and letting her breasts fall free.

“Jax,” she squealed.

“I’ve not been able to stop thinking about these all day.” I cupped her breasts in both hands, palming them, as my eyes landed on hers. “I’ve not been able to stop thinking about you.”

When my mouth latched onto Helen’s nipple, a string of expletives spilled from her lips and without seeing her, I knew her neck and cheeks would be pink with her blush.

I sucked and teased her nipple and then I moved to her other breast, giving it the same attention until Helen whimpered, her hand fisting my jumper.

I don’t think she realised that I was unfastening her skirt until it pooled around her feet. I leaned back so I could see her. “Have you had those on all day?” I growled, taking in her suspender belt and stockings.

“Maybe. They’re new. I’ve never worn them before,” she whispered breathlessly.

“Good. I think I’d have to kill anyone else who’d seen you in these.”

“I still don’t know if I’m sold on all this making out malarky. I think we should stick with a cup of tea.”

My mouth hung open in mock shock. “Well, what if I tell you that we can do this?” I cupped her pussy over her panties, my thumb finding her clit. I circled slowly, the lace sliding against my fingertips. Helen’s body bowed, her mouth seeking mine. Her kiss was desperate as she clung onto me like her legs wouldn’t hold her up anymore. I pushed against her, working my hand faster as I twisted my tongue with hers, my cock throbbing, desperate to get involved in the action.

Helen moaned into my mouth, her body locking before she came, rocking her hips against my hand, chasing every last drop of pleasure, before she almost collapsed in my arms. “So, that’s messing about, eh?” she mumbled against my lips.

“Oh, beautiful. We haven’t even got started yet.”
