Chapter 14

We’re standing by the catamarans, waiting for the hotel guide to give us instructions on sailing these stupid boats.

I’m feeling particularly grumpy, but at least Fabiyoga is gone.

It’s clear Remi is playing dirty. So, I strengthen my resolve.

I smile at Cobie’s date, Lissy.

She takes the bait and walks closer.

“So, you’re the best man?” she says, shimmying in front of me.

Perfect.

I couldn’t have planned this better, even if I had tried.

“That’s what they tell me.” I give her my flirty smile, making sure to keep my eyes up. I am laser-focused on her face. I may be trying to make Remi jealous, but I’m not a sleazeball.

“Has anyone ever told you that you look exactly like Bradley Cooper?” she asks with a flirty smile.

And there’s the elbow to my side that I was expecting as Remi pushes in front of me. She reaches her hand out to Lissy. “We haven’t met yet. I’m Jana’s friend, Remi.”

“Oh, yeah. I forgot about you,” I lie.

She looks over her shoulder, shooting me a tight smile. “I don’t believe that for one second.”

She knows me too well. I can’t forget about her—even when I want to—but I’m not admitting to anything. It’s all about keeping the upper hand.

“If you’re the best man,” Lissy laughs, patting me on the arm, “what am I doing with Cobie?”

I smile. “I’m sure Cobie isn’t a bad second.”

Remi leans in, her arm brushing up against my bare skin, sending a rush of warmth straight to my heart. “You know she’s here with another man, right?”

I turn to her and widen my smile.

Ah, jealousy.

It’s a beautiful thing.

Or a terrible thing if you’re the one experiencing it.

Cobie steps in front of us. He has a strip of zinc oxide on his nose and half his hand tucked into his swim shorts. Lucky for me, he pulls his hand out just in time to shake mine. “Do you sail?”

“Yeah, I sail,” I say, promptly wiping my palm on the side of my shorts.

He puffs his greasy chest out. “Because I’m about to take you down. Just call me Cobie Cat.”

“Cobie Cat?”

“Don’t you get it? These small catamarans are called Hobie Cats. Hobie Cat…Cobie Cat?”

“Yeah, I get it,” I grumble.

“Cobie Cat, it shouldn’t be too hard to take Matt down.” Remi smirks. “He doesn’t know how to use a sailboat.”

I shift my eyes to hers. “Maybe I do. You don’t know everything about me.”

“Unfortunately for you, I do.”

Truer words have never been spoken.
