Chapter sixteen

“What’s wrong?” I ask once Mik and I walk back into the cabin.
Mik had his first day at the barn, and I volunteered to take him.
He’s not trained in security, and while the rescue is relatively small, it is open to the public, and if anyone recognized him and followed him back to the cabin, our cover would have been blown.
Plus, I needed space. Being just down the hall from Tati, instead of a floor away, as my nerves were more frayed than normal.
After taking a different route home and making sure we weren’t followed, we’re back at the cabin, but the air is tense the minute we get inside.
Roman’s on the couch, propped up on pillows and a blanket, frowning into his phone.
“They’re predicting a snowstorm tonight,” he says. I did notice the temps dropping while Mik was mucking stalls and putting blankets on the horses.
“How much?”
“Up to three feet.”
Fuck. We never get snow like that in the city. I guess being further from the ocean and up in the mountains is a different beast.
“Okay, what do we need?”
“Food that doesn’t have to be cooked. Firewood. A generator would be great, but I don’t know if you can find one before it hits. You didn’t pack any cold weather clothes, I’m assuming?”
He doesn’t say it to be mean, but I bristle at the insinuation, anyway. I’m not the fuck up people assume I am, but yes, I did indeed forget to pack any outdoorsy clothes. I was in a rush!
“Alright. Just... text me a list.” I say, turning on my heel and heading toward the door.
“I can go with you and help?” Tati asks hopefully from where she’s sitting at the island, feeding Sparkles.
When I turn to look at her, she’s already realized she can’t. My heart aches for her, but until we know who is after her, this is the safest place for her.
It takes me longer than I would have liked to stop by the grocery store, two Lowes for a generator, a gas station for diesel, and a local fire station that sells cords of wood for a fundraiser. We don’t have the time to cut it ourselves. But it keeps me busy and my mind off her.
