CHAPTER THIRTEEN
By the time Thomas stepped out of the dust-streaked transport truck, the Argentine plateau looked less like a place on a map and more like the surface of some old, patient planet that had been waiting for them.
The wind came low across the scrub and shale chips, smelling faintly of mineral dust and dry grass, and May stood beside him with both hands on her hips, staring at the broken ridges as if they had personally invited her to solve a riddle.
Emma unfolded the preliminary satellite printouts across the hood of the truck, pinning one corner down with a rock and the other with her elbow.
“If the report is exaggerated,” she said, squinting against the glare, “then somebody went to a heroic amount of trouble to exaggerate in the correct geological direction.”
Lindsay laughed as she lifted a case of core sleeves from the back of the second truck.
“That is the most Emma way possible to say we might be standing on a fortune.” Rachel, already checking the calibration on the handheld spectrometer, glanced up.
“Please do not say fortune until I have at least one clean reading. I am emotionally vulnerable to good data.”
Dana kept quiet for a moment, kneeling to break a thin plate of dark shale between her gloved fingers. The rock split with a papery snap, revealing a dense black interior that caught the light with a dull, oily sheen.
“Organic-rich,” she murmured, then sniffed the fresh fracture and raised her brows. “And aromatic enough to make the safety briefing suddenly feel relevant.”
The security team fanned out with practiced ease.
Tristan took the northern ridge with binoculars, Duncan paced the old access track, Chief remained near the vehicles with the radio, Morgan and Manx checked the low ravines for movement, and JB, who seemed incapable of standing anywhere without looking relaxed, leaned against a fender and asked whether shale counted as a collectible if it ruined your boots.
“Only if you label it properly,” May called back, swinging a soil auger from her shoulder. “Unlabeled rocks are just clutter with academic confidence.”
Thomas smiled despite himself and set the first survey grid, marking points with orange flags that snapped and fluttered in the wind.
The reported depository lay at the edge of a basin where uplift had peeled back layers of sedimentary history like pages in a damaged book.
Bands of limestone, siltstone, marl, and black organic shale appeared along the slope, the target interval running in a continuous dark seam with the lateral persistence of a true source-rock system.
Emma tapped the map beside the structural contours.
“If this seam holds across the grid, it is not a pocket. It is a basin-scale interval.”
They began with shallow pits, each dug carefully through the hard desert pavement and into the finer material below.
Lindsay and Rachel worked together, one loosening soil and weathered shale with a mattock while the other bagged samples by horizon, depth, color, grain size, moisture, carbonate reaction, and field odor.
Every bag received coordinates, elevation, sample depth, and a chain-of-custody mark, because Rachel claimed that unlabeled samples were how perfectly intelligent people invented chaos.
At the first pit, the upper soil was ordinary enough: pale brown, sandy, sparse with rootlets and windblown dust. At nearly a foot, the auger bit into compact clay with caliche nodules.
At two feet, it scraped against laminated shale fragments that came up black, fissile, and faintly glossy, with pyrite pinpricks along bedding planes. Dana held one shard to the light.
“This is not just source rock. This has been waiting for someone with paperwork.”
Thomas ran the portable gas detector near the fresh cut and watched methane and heavier-hydrocarbon indicators climb faster than he expected.
It was not a roaring hazard, but the response was strong enough to make him step back, check wind direction, and order the team to keep ignition sources cold.
“We are getting gas showing up at the surface expression,” he said. “That means any deeper core could be very interesting, or very rude.”
Chief lifted his head from the radio.
“Define rude.” May answered without looking up.
“Anything that makes scientists stop joking.”
JB immediately stepped away from the pit by three full steps, earning a grin from Morgan and a chuckle from Manx.
“Good to know your survival instinct is calibrated.”
The second grid point produced a thicker shale interval, and the third produced something stranger: soil with a greenish cast beneath the weathered layer, streaked by tiny metallic flecks that flashed gold and copper under the sun.
Rachel ran the spectrometer twice, frowned, ran it a third time, and then simply handed the unit to Emma without speaking.
Emma read the display, blinked.
“That cannot be right.” Lindsay leaned over her shoulder.
“Is it bad?” Emma’s mouth opened, closed, and opened again. “No. That is the problem. It is offensively good.”
The readings suggested copper, vanadium, molybdenum, uranium-associated radioactivity, and trace rare earth elements in concentrations that had no business appearing so neatly beneath a shale prospect.
Thomas checked the sample bag, coordinates, duplicate split, spectrometer calibration curve, and instrument logs, looking for any mistake that would make the discovery smaller. None presented itself.
“We came for shale,” he said softly. “The ground appears to have included a bonus package.”
They moved to a shallow trench line and began exposing the formation more deliberately, cutting perpendicular to bedding so they could measure true thickness instead of being fooled by dip.
Digging in shale was slow work, not because the rock was always hard, but because it changed character every few inches: fissile plates, dense mudstone, calcareous stringers, slicken-sided fractures, and greasy chips that stained gloves and tools dark gray.
Rachel explained the sequence aloud as she worked, half for the record and half because she liked making the rocks confess in public.
“Fine-grained marine deposition, anoxic bottom water, preserved Type II organics, later burial, pressure, heat, kerogen cracking, hydrocarbon generation. Add natural fractures, brittle carbonate-rich beds, low permeability, and a cap that behaves itself, and suddenly everyone with a drilling budget wants to be your friend.”
“I would like a friend with a drilling budget,” JB said. “My current friends make me carry water.”
Duncan, passing behind him with two full canisters of water, smirked.
“Your current friends are improving your character.” JB took one canister from him.
“My character is now heavy.”
By midday the data table had become difficult to look at calmly.
The shale showed high total-organic-carbon indicators, elevated gamma response, strong gas show, promising brittleness, visible hydrocarbon staining, and a thickness that widened toward the eastern flags.
Beneath and beside it, the soils repeatedly returned mineral signatures rich enough to suggest not a single isolated vein, but a broader mineralized zone tied to the basin’s faulting and fluid migration history.
Dana set out the core fragments in order on a canvas sheet. Dark shale gave way to calcareous bands, then to pyritic specks, then to sandy lenses that might act as migration pathways.
“If there is oil generated here,” she said, “some of it may still be retained in nano-porosity and adsorbed organic matter, and some may have moved into higher-porosity streaks nearby.”
Thomas crouched beside her and traced the sequence with one dusty finger.
He imagined geochemical lab work coming next: Rock-Eval pyrolysis for remaining hydrocarbon potential, vitrinite reflectance for thermal maturity, X-ray diffraction for mineralogy, mercury injection or NMR for pore structure, and pressure testing to estimate deliverability.
Then he imagined horizontal wells turning through the richer interval, hydraulic fracturing opening brittle layers, gas flowing first, then condensate, then oil where the maturity window allowed it.
“You have your thundercloud face,” Lindsay told him. Thomas looked up.
“I do not have a thundercloud face.” Emma, Rachel, Dana, and May all spoke at once.
“You do.” Even Chief nodded from ten meters away, which Thomas felt was excessive.
The deeper hand-auger sample came up warm from friction and heavy with fine black cuttings.
When Rachel rinsed a portion in the sieve, denser grains remained behind in a sparkling residue.
The pan showed magnetite, sulfides, and several colors that made May forget her joke halfway through forming it.
“That is not background noise,” Rachel said. Her voice had dropped into the careful register she used when excitement might contaminate judgment. “That is ore-grade possibility, if the lab confirms continuity.”
Emma stared at the residue and whispered.
“This is the kind of sample that makes accountants learn geology.”
Morgan and Manx returned from the southern wash with news that drew the security team closer. He had found tire tracks, old but not ancient, crossing a dry streambed beyond the mapped access route, and the tread pattern was too deep for a ranch pickup.
Tristan confirmed dust rising intermittently farther south, where the land folded into low hills. Chief listened, checked the map.
“That road is not on our packet.”
The team continued working, but the air changed. The light-hearted comments grew thinner, replaced by shorter sentences and longer looks across the basin. A distant engine note rose and vanished behind the ridges, and twice Chief lifted a hand for silence when the wind shifted.
Still, JB managed to point at a stubborn clump of shale and announce.
“If this rock has been here for a hundred and forty million years, it can wait while I drink water.”
They pushed the survey east, following the thickening trend, the fracture corridor, and the mineralized soil anomaly.
Each new point confirmed the pattern. The shale was not a rumor; it was a major source interval with commercial promise, and the surrounding mineral signatures suggested additional wealth in metals used for alloys, batteries, catalysts, and industrial systems. The find was not merely valuable. It was strategically valuable.
Dana photographed the outcrop while Thomas recorded structural measurements: bedding angle, fracture orientation, joint spacing, weathering profile, slickensides, calcite veining, pyrite distribution, and visible mineralization.
“If the subsurface matches the surface,” he said, “this could support oil and gas development and a separate mineral program.” May gave him a sideways look.
“That is the professional version of screaming.”
By late afternoon, the team followed the unmarked road Morgan had found, moving carefully between ridges where the shale cropped out in dark shelves.
The trucks rolled slowly, engines low, radios muted except for Chief’s clipped check-ins, while Tristan watched the high ground and Duncan tracked the road edge for fresh boot prints.
Nobody said they expected trouble, but everyone had made room for it.
The first sound was metallic: a hammer striking stone, then another, then the grind of a small engine badly muffled under tarps.
They rounded a bend and saw a cut in the hillside where no cut should have been, raw and fresh against the older weathered rock.
The exposed face showed the same black shale interval they had sampled, but here it was hacked open in benches, its mineral-streaked waste piled beside fuel drums, crude shelters, and carts moving along plank tracks.
For several seconds, no one spoke. Hundreds of workers filled the illegal dig, some carrying sacks of dark shale, others sorting heavy mineral-rich spoil by hand beneath clouds of dust that would have failed any proper safety inspection.
Their clothes were worn thin, their faces coated gray, and the supervisors near the pumps and generators watched them with the bored impatience of men spending someone else’s lives cheaply.
Emma lowered the map as if it had suddenly become too heavy. Rachel’s grip tightened around the sample case, where the labels now felt less like scientific records and more like evidence.
“They already knew,” whispered Lindsay.
Thomas looked from the open trench to the workers bent beneath the dust and understood that the wealth in the ground had not been waiting for discovery after all; it had been measured, taken, hidden, and paid for with the labor of people earning almost nothing to dig it out.
Getting Bianca’s signature was simply the final legal hurdle to ensure that all this was above board.
But they hadn’t waited. They, whoever ‘they’ were, didn’t want to wait.
Instead, they gathered those willing to work for pennies a day and began their exploration only to prove that the land was worth more than originally thought.
This had just become a political game and one they might not win.
