“I see,” she nodded. She started to leave, then turned and looked at Ham. “Do you still have the land document that I signed?”

“We do,” he nodded. “We haven’t shown it to anyone.”

“Good. Don’t. I think I might have one more surprise for them.”

The first convoy of independent investigators reached the shale site shortly after sunrise, its white trucks moving slowly through the protest encampment beneath the watch of thousands of people.

The levels varied across the site and required confirmation, but investigators concluded that poor containment had allowed industrial fluids to reach exposed soil where wind and storm runoff could carry them farther.

Ecologists followed tire tracks and utility trenches beyond the leased boundary.

They documented crushed nesting cover, severed wildlife paths, abandoned burrows near the brightest floodlights, and a new access road cut across a seasonal drainage that local herders said carried water after summer storms.

Dust on nearby shrubs was thick enough to reduce the clean surface available for insects and grazing animals, and the constant noise had pushed birds away from otherwise suitable habitat.

The company had not been caught hiding treasure in the form imagined by rumor.
