Chapter Five

Shane

Blythe left us outside.

I don’t know what I expected, but it wasn’t this. Surely she should know who I am, who we are, since we are fated mates, and my curse would be broken instantly, right? Right?

What if she doesn’t remember us? Ash questions. It feels just as rhetorical as what I was asking myself so I don’t answer.

Did you feel our skin do that weird tingly thing when she touched us? This time when he asks, I know he’s talking to me. Because he is spot on with how it feels when her skin touches our fur.

It felt like magic is running from her to us.

Do you think she can feel it yet?

Since she didn’t drop to her knees and beg us to knot her, I would guess not.

Stupid fucking witch! Emotions so powerful flow from Ash to me, our entire body rolls over and we’re flat our my back before I can blink. One second I’m watching Blythe through the screen door, walk from room to room, and the next all I see is the ceiling of the covered porch.

My previously calm and nurturing companion has seemingly joined me on the dark side of thinking for a bit.

Now what do we do? Our birthday is in three days and we are barely any better off than we were three years ago.

I don’t know, Ash. But can you let me roll back over? I don’t want our mate coming out here and us be laying here, looking like a dead dog.

Wait… Ash flips us over again, and I get us as comfortable as we can be on this wood porch floor, then listen to whatever he just thought of.

Why did she keep calling us a dog? She really must not know that we’re a wolf.

Could that be why the curse isn’t broken yet?

How can we get her to know the difference?

If only there was something else we could show her to let her see our magic. Then I bet she could maybe remember us from way back when. I mean, we may be bigger, but our fur is still the same color.

Other than our white tipped ear.

The small white tuft of fur on our right ear is the only physical appearance of us being different since we were cursed, other than being stuck in wolf form that is.

Unless you know of a way to tell to her that we have superior hearing, great night vision, or fast healing abilities while we can’t actually talk, I’m stuck.

You think she would be shocked if I jumped up onto the roof?

Ash—

Yea, I had a feeling it wasn’t a good idea as soon as I thought it.

Unless we want to scare her to death, which would defeat our being here, lets not jump scare our mate until we can actually reintroduce ourselves and remind her what we are all capable of.

Smart thinking.

I do it occasionally.

A few hours have passed and it is full on nighttime now. The sun has gone down, the moon is almost at it’s full reflective brightness. Waxing gibbous. In leading up to each full moon, the moon moves toward the opposite side of Earth and her crescent dark slices gets smaller and smaller.

I always loved the moon and it’s phases when I was younger, the stars too, but after the curse took effect and we learned about my birthday deadline, I began to resent it every time another full moon spun around on the calendar.

Each one brought us closer to the one I dreaded the most, so I stopped looking up so much and tried to keep my eyes forward and onward.

It didn’t help as much as I’d hoped it would, but we are finally so close to the finish line, I can almost taste the other side.

Mate.

I feel her too, Ash.

She’s happy. I like her being happy. I just wish it was us who was making her feel like this.

The longer we are in her presence, even if we can’t see her with our eyes, we are starting to feel the strings of our bond strengthen from the inside.

We hear every footstep, we feel every shift of her mood, the vanilla and sugar smell sinks a little bit deeper into our pores.

We aren’t sure yet what she smells when she is near us, if that mating bond side effect has kicked in yet for her, but I can’t wait to see how the melding of our smells changes her scent.

It won’t ever change enough to make her unrecognizable to us, but once we complete our knot and mating, we both will pick up hints of each other.

Two, plus Ash, will truly then become one.
