Epilogue
A Few Months Later
The entire magickal world turned out for the wedding. Marsh had been surprised that Constance wanted to have the wedding in Branders, but she said it was their new home together. Besides, it was easy enough for her family to travel.
He had been lucky to own a few acres attached to his house, so they had pitched a tent in a field to accommodate everyone. It had been interesting to watch the townsfolk and the Merryweathers interact. The fact that Doris seemed to know them didn’t really surprise him.
“What are you thinking about, husband?” Constance said, as she leaned against him.
He looked down at her, his heart full. Since falling for Constance and discovering his heritage, he had been learning a lot about his family and his abilities. He still had a long way to go, but knowing that he could shoot fire out of his fingers was kind of cool.
“I’m thinking I’m the luckiest man in the world right now.”
The smile she gave him lit up her entire face. She was dressed in blue—a Merryweather tradition—and it brought out her amazing eyes. All that dark hair had been piled on her head in a complicated fashion. Marsh was pretty sure it was Cappy’s doing.
Her smile faded. “I brought trouble to your door.”
He shook his head and leaned down to brush his mouth over hers. Every instinct told him to take her away from the party and drive them both crazy. But he knew the rules…or at least etiquette.
“They were going to come for me one way or another.”
And yes, he knew there would be a fight with his uncle and cousins down the line. But they were hidden from the world for now. Once the council had reviewed what had happened, they were formally expelled from the organization. Before Alastair could be brought in, the family had disappeared.
“You don’t mind we need to split time between New York and here?”
He shook his head. After a lot of discussions, he had gotten her father and the council to agree on the split time. Simon offered to be the go-between if needed. Besides, Constance was the new mayor of Branders.
After the big blow-up with Marsh’s cousin, Cynthia and her son had disappeared. Not in a nefarious way. Their house was seemingly empty overnight. So, the town had an election, and so many people wrote in Constance’s name, that she was acting as interim Mayor until a new election could be held.
“You two should leave,” Cappy said as she slipped into the chair beside him. “The parental units are busy arguing about some spell with that Doris woman. So now is your chance to escape.”
He smiled at his sister-in-law. “Thanks.”
“We can’t just—”
He rose and tugged Constance out of her seat.
“We can and we will.”
She looked at him, then once again a smile curved her lips. She kissed her sister on the cheek, then together, they rushed out. Normally, they would just use a spell, but the townsfolk were there, and they were already causing a stir.
Constance was laughing when they reached his truck and he couldn’t help it. He had to lean down and kiss her. She sighed into the kiss.
“Thank you for loving me,” he said.
“Back at ya, Marsh.” Her smile made everything in him warm.
He helped her up into the cab of the pickup, then joined her. Soon, they were on their way, holding hands, her head on his shoulder.
A man truly couldn’t ask for more than that.
