Teagan
Britney almost seemed relieved not to have to pretend anymore. “Cards on the table? I want you gone.”
“Sure about that?” Britney asked, her voice as tart as a Sour Patch Kid. “I was looking at your socials. You were the Southwest Junior Champ in single sculls. You must miss rowing.”
“Yeah, I do.” Didn’t take a brain surgeon to figure that out. “So?”
Britney fluffed the pillow behind her and leaned back. “Did you know that the best school for girls’ crew is Gravenhurst Academy? No need to answer. I know you do, because you follow them.”
“I also follow Taylor Swift. Doesn’t mean I want to go to band camp.”
Britney smirked. She knew she had gotten Teagan’s interest.
Teagan shrugged. “So what if I follow Gravenhurst?”
“What if you could go there?”
Her feet answered for her. Performed a happy dance that sent water sloshing onto the carpet.
“Don’t worry about that. I’ll get someone to clean it later. Anyway, my mom went to Gravenhurst. As an equestrian.” Britney let the comment land. “She’s friends with the head of the school. I can make a call right now and get you a tryout tomorrow morning. You know they’re here, right?”
Yes. Obviously. She followed them on Insta. They were the best girls’ rowing team on the East Coast.
“If you want me to call…” Britney gave a little “up to you” shrug.
Of course she wanted her to. “But… if I got in, I’d have to leave the guys.”
“Yeah, that’s kind of the point, Teagan. But you’d get to row again. It’s win–win, babe. If this works, you get what you want. And I get what I want.” She held up her phone. “Do I make the call or not?”
