Cam

“No sign of the saw.”

“Okay. Umm… hey.”

Uh-oh. She wasn’t here about the saw.

“You know how you said you were stretching in the erg room earlier? Where Perry and Crabcatcher were taking selfies?”

“Yeah.”

“Umm… they didn’t see you.”

“I was in the corner.”

Teagan showed him some photos. He wasn’t in them.

“Which corner?”

Her eyes were practically pleading with him to miraculously find evidence of himself in the photos. Holy shit. “You think I did it?” He expected this from the guys, but Teagan? Yeah, they weren’t exactly in what you could call a good place, but this? Did she really think he was capable of sabotage?

“I don’t know, Cam.”

She sounded apologetic, like it pained her to be accusing him of sawing Josh’s oar.

“You have been acting differently,” she said. “You walked out on me at the dance. No one knows where you were during the sabotage. And you got in a fight with Josh. What am I supposed to think?”

“You could think I’m the Cam you know. The one who would never sabotage the team.”

“The Cam I know wouldn’t pick a fight with Josh either.”

Every cell in his body felt like it was about to explode.

He hated this. Hated keeping so much bottled up inside that he did stupid things that made him look guilty when all he was trying to do was get by.

Do well at school. Get a shot at stroke on the team.

Help his dad pay that huge bill that could shut down the business.

Screw it. She said he should be more vulnerable.

“You want to know what I was doing? I was selling my dad’s truck.

” She rocked back, shocked. “To one of the Westvale rowers.”

“Why didn’t you just say that?”

“Because it’s no one’s business. And how did you know I got in a fight with Josh? We were the only people there.”

“He told me.”

“Right.” He got it. “You guys are pretty good friends now, huh?”

“We’re not that close…”

But…

“Close enough that he’s sharing.” He waited, but she didn’t deny it. His heart cracked in two. “You really think I’d do this to him?” Again, no answer. “You don’t know me at all.”

Her phone buzzed. She checked it, looked up at him, eyes wide. “Perry hacked into Coach’s laptop.”
