Chapter 44

FORTY-FOUR

GE

Merry Christmas, Amelia!

AG

Merry Christmas, Grant!

GE

What are you up to today?

AG

Lainey has an NBA game this afternoon, so we’re doing dinner, gifts, and hot chocolate when she gets home. Very lowkey, but perfect. What about you?

GE

Small dinner with some of the guys. Riley will be there, which is nice. Feels like forever since all of us were together doing something that didn’t involve hockey.

AG

It’s good to be around the people you love this time of year.

GE

Agreed. That’s the whole point of the holiday.

Have a good time with your friends, Lia.

AG

You too :)

AG

Going to any fun parties for New Year’s Eve?

GE

Already in bed with a face mask on. I can’t be bothered to get dressed and go anywhere.

AG

That’s a good look.

GE

I thought so too!

Are you raging tonight?

AG:

What about this screams ‘rage’ to you?

GE

The mismatched socks, clearly. And the heated blanket.

How’s the weather in Denver?

AG

We’ve had a cold snap the last couple of days, and it’s been frigid.

GE

How do you like your hot chocolate? With milk or water?

AG

Is that really a question? Milk, obviously, and anything else is a crime!

GE

Now I want hot chocolate. And a heated blanket. I need to upgrade my linen selection around here.

AG

Do you see your family over the holidays?

GE

Sometimes I do, depending on our schedule and how many days off we get around Christmas and New Year’s. Hannah went down to Florida for a couple days last week, but I’ve been fighting a cold, and I didn’t want to get anyone sick.

AG

Are you feeling better?

GE

Getting there! Been taking it easy with lots of video games and soup haha. Hudson’s girlfriend is a chef, and she made me a nice pot of chicken noodle.

What’s your favorite soup?

AG

I love tomato bisque with a grilled cheese. Behind pancakes, something like that is definitely a comfort meal.

GE

Damn. Talking to you has made me hungry, and it’s too late for me to order anything.

Guess I’ll suffer.

AG

The plight of an average white man making millions of dollars a year!

GE

Yeah. As soon as I said it, I realized how douchey it sounded.

At least you didn’t call me mediocre. Thanks for that :)

Any resolutions as we head into a new year?

AG

I don’t love resolutions. They make it seem like you have to do things perfectly for it to be considered a success, when that’s far from the truth. A step forward is still progress.

That being said, I do like to pick a thing or two I’m going to work on the next couple of months. And I’m going to say my goal for this year is to take risks, even when I know I could fail.

GE

I’m not sure I’ve ever done any resolutions, but that’s a good one.

I’m going to say that I’m going to start being more assertive. I’m not going to boss people around, but if I want something, I’m going to do what I can to get it. And not let anyone push me over.

I hate confrontation and agree with everyone about anything because I don’t like saying no haha.

I’m too soft, I guess.

AG

You’re not too soft. You’re gentle, and there’s a difference.

GE

Gentle. I like that.

GE

Is it lame that I’m disappointed I wasn’t selected to the All-Star team?

AG

I just saw the rosters. I’m sorry. Of course you’re allowed to be disappointed.

GE

I work hard. It would be nice for the league to recognize that.

It sucks that the fans didn’t vote me in either. Oh well. Maybe when Maverick and Hudson retire, I’ll have a shot!

AG

For what it’s worth, I would’ve voted for you.

What are you going to do over the break?

GE

I’m going skiing with Ethan, Connor, and a couple of the rookies out in Colorado, actually.

AG

Nice! We’ve had a lot of snow this year, so you’ll have some nice powder.

GE

Gnarly!!!

Am I speaking like a Coloradan?

AG

You’re speaking like something, that’s for sure.
