Chapter Twelve

The Weight of Inheritance

POV: Dominic

The forty-first floor of Rossi Holdings was a fortress locked in glass and brushed steel.

In the forty-eight hours since the lake house, Dominic had fundamentally rewritten the architecture of his perimeter.

He dismissed the old guard, severing contracts with anyone whose loyalties tied back to his father's era or his uncle's payroll.

The new security detail answered exclusively to Elena.

She had built a wall around him, and he had let her.

Dominic stood in the center of his office. The overhead lights were off, leaving the room illuminated only by the gray, overcast light of the Ashford afternoon bleeding through the reinforced windows.

He didn't wear a jacket. His sleeves were rolled to the elbows, exposing the fading purple bruise along his ribs and the neat row of butterfly closures holding his skin together. The physical pain was a dull, constant throb. He welcomed it. It kept him sharp.

Behind his desk, a heavy panel of mahogany slid seamlessly into the wall, revealing a biometric vault.

He pressed his thumb against the glass reader. The heavy steel bolts retracted with a solid, echoing thud.

Soft footsteps approached from the open doorway.

Dominic didn't turn around. He didn't reach for the weapon resting on his desk. The adrenaline spike that usually accompanied a breached threshold never materialized.

He knew her footfalls. He knew the exact rhythm of her stride.

Elena stopped beside him. She wore a tailored black blazer over a charcoal blouse, her hair pulled back, the severe lines of her posture acting as a fragile dam against the memories of the lake house bathroom.

But the space between them had irrevocably changed.

The magnetic repulsion of their professional distance was gone, replaced by a gravity that pulled them constantly into each other’s orbit.

She didn't stand a polite three feet away. She stepped directly into his space, her shoulder brushing his arm.

"The regional directors are secure," Elena reported, her voice low in the quiet office. "Vittoria is back at her apartment. I have three contractors stationed inside her building, and a dedicated driver who doesn't take alternate routes. She’s safe, Dominic."

He closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, letting the sound of his first name wash over him. It still felt like a sudden, sharp intake of oxygen.

"Marcus called this morning," Dominic said, staring into the dark interior of the open vault. "He expressed his profound horror at the attack. He offered his personal guard to supplement my detail."

"A generous offer from the man who bought the gate codes."

"I declined politely. He accepted politely." Dominic reached into the vault, pulling out a heavy, matte-black hard drive. "He thinks the lake house was a warning shot. He thinks I’m going to panic, consolidate the legitimate holdings, and hand the street routes over to him to buy peace."

Elena looked at the drive in his hand. "Are you?"

"No."

Dominic set the drive on the polished surface of his desk. He reached back into the vault, extracting a leather-bound physical ledger. It smelled of old paper and dust-the smell of his father’s reign. He dropped it next to the drive.

He turned to face her. The slate-gray light caught the pale scar intersecting her eyebrow. He reached up, his knuckles grazing the soft skin of her jawline. He didn't have to hide the gesture. There were no cameras in this room, no prying eyes.

She leaned into his touch, a microscopic surrender that sent a shockwave of heat straight to his chest.

"My father built this empire on fear," Dominic said softly, his thumb tracing the line of her cheekbone.

"When I took over, I thought I could build a firewall.

Keep the violence on one side, keep the legitimate capital on the other.

But the lake house proved the firewall is an illusion.

As long as the dirt is in the foundation, Marcus can use it to burn the house down. "

He dropped his hand, stepping back to the desk. He tapped the heavy black hard drive.

"You want to know what I’m hiding, Elena?" Dominic asked, his formal diction stripped away, leaving only the raw, unvarnished truth. "This is it. This is the entire architecture."

He picked up a specialized connector cable and plugged the drive directly into his primary terminal. A complex encryption screen flashed across the monitor, demanding a multi-tiered alphanumeric cipher.

Dominic typed it in flawlessly.

The screen bloomed with hundreds of cascading folders. Real estate holdings. Zoning permits. Union pension funds.

And beneath them, the shadow ledger. Offshore routing numbers. Shell company registries in Cyprus and the Caymans. The exact, staggering mathematics of washing billions of dollars of criminal capital through Ashford’s skyline.

"My long-term plan," Dominic said, gesturing to the glowing monitor.

He trusted her completely, pulling her fully into his inner circle.

"I am not just holding the family together.

I am actively starving the criminal wing to death.

Every month, I redirect ten percent of the port profits into legitimate, heavily taxed municipal bonds.

I am buying up the commercial districts and putting them in blind trusts that Marcus can't access. "

Elena stared at the screen. Her dark eyes tracked the routing numbers, the shell companies, the irrefutable evidence. She didn't say a word. She was perfectly, terrifyingly still.

"In six months, the transition will reach a tipping point," Dominic continued, the passion he kept buried finally breaking through the ice.

"The legitimate businesses will be completely severed from the undercurrent.

Marcus will have a hollow network of thugs with no capital to pay them.

The criminal ties will be dead, and the Rossi name will be clean. "

He looked down at his right hand. The heavy gold signet ring caught the ambient light.

He hated it. He hated the history it demanded he carry.

Dominic grabbed the edge of the ring, twisting it violently over his knuckle, and pulled it off. He tossed it onto the mahogany desk. It hit the wood with a dull, heavy clatter, rolling to a stop against the leather ledger.

"I've spent ten years executing an inheritance I never chose," Dominic murmured, looking back at Elena. "I did it alone because trusting anyone meant exposing Vita. It meant giving Marcus leverage."

His left hand rose, a deeply ingrained reflex reaching for the silver cufflink at his wrist to ground himself.

He stopped. He didn't turn it. He forced his hand to drop back to his side. He wasn't holding anything back anymore.

"I can't do it alone anymore," Dominic admitted.

The words felt jagged in his throat. He was a man who would never say I need help, but the absolute necessity of the woman standing in front of him superseded his pride.

"I need you at my side. Not just to watch the doors.

I need someone who won't flinch from what this actually takes. "

He moved behind the desk, tapping a new command into the terminal.

A fresh administrative profile window popped up.

Create New Master User.

Dominic typed the name. E. Vance.

He authorized the highest level of clearance. He bypassed the read-only restrictions. He granted the profile absolute, unrestricted access to the shadow ledger, the legitimate accounts, the routing numbers, and the architectural blueprints of his entire empire.

He hit the enter key. The terminal chimed softly, printing a small, encrypted keycard from the peripheral slot.

Dominic picked up the card. He walked around the desk, stopping inches from Elena.

"You hold the perimeter," Dominic said, his voice dropping to a rough whisper. "Now I'm giving you the foundation."

He held the card out to her.

He was giving her real access. It was the absolute manifestation of his faith in her, handing her the keys to his survival.

Elena looked at the small piece of plastic in his hand.

For the first time since she had breached his lobby weeks ago, the iron-clad mercenary mask completely failed her.

Her breathing turned shallow, erratic. A profound, agonizing war broke across her expression.

Her eyes darted from the master drive on the desk to the card in his palm, and finally to his face.

She looked entirely devastated.

Dominic misread the hesitation. He thought it was the sheer gravity of the mafia underworld crashing down on her. He thought she was finally realizing the sheer scale of the blood and capital she was stepping into.

"I know what I'm asking," Dominic said gently.

He reached out with his free hand, his fingers curling around the nape of her neck, anchoring her.

"I know I'm pulling you into the dark. But if you stand with me, I swear to God, I will drag this family into the light.

You are the only person I trust to see this through. "

A visible shudder ripped through Elena’s frame.

She closed her eyes. Her throat worked as she swallowed hard. When she opened her eyes again, the devastation was locked away, buried beneath a heavy, impenetrable layer of resolve.

"I'm with you," Elena whispered. Her voice lacked its usual clipped precision. It sounded like a vow ripped from the bottom of her lungs.

She reached out and took the encrypted keycard from his palm.

Her fingers brushed his, the skin freezing cold despite the warmth of the office. She slipped the card into the inner pocket of her blazer, directly over her heart.

She didn't know it, but as she pocketed the card, a crushing, tragic irony filled the quiet space between them.

He had just handed her the exact access her task force wanted. He had given her the bullet Okafor would use to end his life.

Dominic exhaled, a massive, invisible weight lifting from his shoulders. For the first time in a decade, he wasn't carrying the Rossi empire alone. He pulled her flush against his chest, wrapping his arms around her tightly, burying his face in the dark, heavy scent of her hair.

"We start tomorrow," Dominic murmured against her temple, entirely unaware that the trap had just closed around his throat. "We bleed Marcus dry."

Elena wrapped her arms around his waist, holding onto him with a desperate, crushing grip.

"Tomorrow," she echoed softly into the quiet room.
