THIRTY-THREE
The ring camera gives a clear view of the fury on Jamir’s face, and it increases my anxiety.
Impatient, he starts banging. “Open the door!”
There’s no more avoiding this. I have to be straight with him.
As I unlock the door and open it, Jamir marches past me into the apartment. “Tell me the truth. Have you been seeing that club owner behind my back?”
I draw for courage and admit, “Yes.”
“What the fuck!” He throws his hands up. “I’m working hard, about to receive a promotion to buy us a house, and you’re doing that to me?”
“Jamir—”
“Did you fuck him?” he presses, eyes red with anger. “The truth.”
“We haven’t... yet.”
He scrubs his hand down his face while fuming. “You flipped out on me for being around women at the country club. Yet you’re disrespecting our relationship. My trust .”
“Let me explain.”
“Go ahead, Davi ?” My heart skips at the use of Kross’s nickname for me. “What the hell is going on between you and that loser?”
“Don’t call him that!” I snap, tearing up.
Hurt falls over his face like a curtain as his shoulders droop. “You have feelings for him?”
His visible pain makes it so hard, but I have to be honest. “Yes. I’m sorry, Jamir. But we should—”
“Don’t say it!” he yells. “You’re not leaving me to go fuck that trash.”
“Jamir…” Tears spill down my cheeks. “We’re not working. We argue more than anything. I’m not happy. Let’s end it.”
A frightening look darkens his gaze, and I flinch as he steps closer. “I’m not letting you go.”
“I’m already gone,” I murmur. “You never realized.”
“I can fix it,” he insists, touching my face. “We can move on from this if you never see him again. So tell me you still love me, and you’ll stop seeing him.”
Staggering back from his reach, I say softly, “I can’t tell you that. My heart wants Kross.”
His face twists in agony. “Five years… this is what you do to me?” As a tear falls, he storms out of the apartment and slams the door.
I drop down on the sofa and bury my face in my hands.
