Chapter Eleven

Kaleb sat at his desk and kept glancing at the time. He wanted his hands on his baby girl, and that day, he didn’t have to wait until they got home. He knew he wouldn’t be able to make love to her, and he thought a kiss would settle him enough to get through the rest of the day.

He caught her scent as he was on the phone before he saw her. He finished his call and then turned to her. The first look of her always snagged his breath, and he instantly hardened.

He smiled and pulled her onto his lap.

Jeff went over everything that happened.

Kaleb’s first feeling was dread, but then he saw her blush and thought she looked so charming, he put his feelings aside and laughed.

He scowled over her shoulder. “Stop teasing her, Jeff.”

The three decided on a plan, and then Kaleb wrapped an arm around her waist as they walked to the elevator.

He rolled his eyes and tightened his grip on her waist when a guy he worked with walked up to them. He knew what was coming. Ray liked women, and he liked variety.. He didn’t know how long Ray’s marriage would last because he already had at least one affair that Kaleb knew of.

Kaleb tried his best to ignore the guys. They were usually decent, but he knew how hard it was not to try to talk to her when she was around. “There’s a great sandwich shop down the street.”

He couldn’t wait. As soon as the elevator doors closed, he corralled her against the wall and kissed her until she started making some of the sounds that always drove him crazy.

He raised his head and looked down at her.

He probably shouldn’t have done that, because she looked even more beautiful with her puffy red lips and the desire that sparkled in her eyes.

Cops were known to be smart-asses, and he knew most didn’t mean to piss him off.

They had to do whatever they could to relax during stressful days on the job.

He knew he had to calm the fuck down. He needed to get his shit together, or he would push her away, and that was the last thing he wanted to do.

She wrapped her arms around his waist. “I promise I won’t come in again. I’ll just wait out here for you.”

No way in hell he wanted her out on the sidewalk. Besides the cops that milled around, it wasn’t unknown for people to get shot at the station.

He slid his thumb over her bottom lip. God, he loved her lips.

He could feel his pre-cum soak his boxers. He growled and started walking them down the street. What he wouldn’t give to have her naked under him.

The sandwich shop was only a few blocks from the station, so they walked. He noticed men checking Myla out, and he kept telling himself he’d get used to it eventually.

They bought the three sandwiches, one of which was for Jeff that he’d take back to him, and sat at a small table by the window.

He concentrated on Myla and ignored all the looks they got.

Kaleb grabbed onto her hand. “What’s going to happen after work?”

“I’m game for anything.”

“Let’s make dinner at home and then watch a movie?” If he had her to himself, he didn’t have to worry about her being stared at.

She smiled at him. “I love that idea. I have a pasta dish I think you’d like. I’ll run to the store on the way to your house.”

He started picking up the wrappers and napkins they’d used. “Sounds good. We need to get going.”

“Yes, I should get back to the office.”

He walked them back toward the station, holding her hand. “Where did you park your car?” he asked as he looked around.

“Just up a bit on the other side of the street.”

“I see it.”

He got them to her car and waited for her to unlock, throw in her purse, and then turn back to him. He cupped the back of her head and used his other hand on her waist to keep her steady.

“Can you text me when you get back to your office, Baby?”

“Of course, Daddy.”

Kaleb grunted. “I will never get used to hearing you say that. It makes me feel ten feet tall.”

“Good.”

He bent and took her lips because he couldn’t go another second without her. He could feel his control start to slip, but then he heard some catcalls from his fellow officers, and he was able to lift his head.

He bit back a groan at the passion-filled look on her face. “I’d better get in.”

She nodded and slipped into the car.

“I’ll see you soon, Baby.”

She waved as she drove away.

He walked back into the station. He must have looked bad because no one razzed him on the way to his desk. He handed over Jeff’s sandwich before he took off his jacket and draped it on the back of his chair.

“Thanks, how much do I owe you?”

Kaleb waved it away. “I think I owe you.”

“Myla went back to work?”

Kaleb nodded as he opened a case file he’d been working on.

“Is it hard?”

Kaleb looked up. “What?”

“Having so many men give her attention?”

Kaleb thought about denying it, but he knew he could trust his partner with anything. “Fuck, yes,” he said and leaned back. “Everywhere we go, she gets attention. The only time I feel settled is when we’re at my house.”

“It will be tough, but she’s worth it.”

Kaleb wiped a hand down his face. “Yes, she is. I just still sometimes wonder what the hell she sees in me.”

“I’m not coming onto you or anything.”

Kaleb snorted out a laugh.

Jeff smiled and continued. “But you’re a very attractive guy, even with the scars. You’ve always and still do get female attention, you just don’t notice it. Does that bother her?”

“I’m so busy watching the guys, I don’t know if she sees me being checked out. She’s never said anything.”

“Ask her.”

“I think I might. It would make me feel better knowing she feels jealousy, too.”

“It will make you feel better. My suggestion: don’t keep letting this eat at you until it comes between the two of you.”

“What are you, Dr. Phil?”

Jeff balled up a piece of paper and threw it at him. “Smart-ass.”

Kaleb caught it and tossed it back. “No, really. It’s good advice.”

“Of course it is,” Jeff said and went back to work. “I’m always right.”

Kaleb just rolled his eyes.
