Chapter 5
Chapter Five
“Life or death? That’s serious stuff,” Xavier said.
He could tell Nova was afraid. It was taking every ounce of strength he had not to scoop her into his arms and hold her close.
It had been hard enough for him not to do that years ago. Now that he knew she was a Little—and that she was terrified—it was damn near impossible.
Managing to keep the urges at bay, he told himself to keep a professional demeanor.
“Like I mentioned in that report I wrote out for y’all,” she said, the Tennessee twang in her voice coming back for a moment and making Xavier smile.
Since she’d gone pop, the accent wasn’t as thick.
But evidently it was still beneath the surface.
“It started with the letters. I guess a lot of famous people get those.
I even reached out to a few and talked to them about their experiences.
“But then one of the letters had a picture of me that was taken by someone who had to be close by. It was in my backyard, at my home in Nashville.”
Xavier nodded. “Yeah. Sounds like whoever this is, they’ve started escalating their disturbing behavior.”
The panic in Nova’s voice was evident as she sat up straighter and asked, “What if they don’t stop until they kidnap or murder me?”
Xavier’s heart was breaking. He wanted to find whatever sick jerk was scaring this Little girl and make them regret they ever started this twisted game.
“We won’t let that happen,” he stated. “You did good by coming to us. I know you have a security team, and they’ll protect you. More men than we have. They can cover lots of different angles. But they won’t investigate to find the root cause of all this. We will.”
Breaker nodded. “Yeah. The FBI and cops will try. But they’re stretched thin. Besides, we have some, uh, tools at our disposal that even they don’t have.”
Xavier was excited to use some of the Daddy Guard’s vast resources.
They had some wealthy benefactors and one of the founders and funders—a movie director named Stryker—loved to tinker and invent all kinds of crazy gadgets.
It would be fun using some of those tools; he simply wished it was under better circumstances.
“Will you all be around some?” Nova asked.
Xavier smiled at the pop star. “Yep. And when you’re not performing, you’re welcome to stay at our headquarters. It’s well protected and no one would think to even look for you there.”
She perked up. “Really? I’ve been scared about staying here! I mean, I have security, I know. And the hotel staff has been super accommodating. But it’s probably not hard to figure out where I’m staying. What if this guy gets past all the guards and security measures? I’m screwed!”
Xavier stood. “Don’t worry. You’re safe now. The Daddy Guard is going to handle this.”
When Nova looked up at him with her big blue eyes, Xavier nearly lost it.
He wasn’t sure how long he could keep his personal feelings at bay. He’d just have to take it one moment at a time.
But he knew one thing.
That sweet Little already had a powerful hold on him.
