Chapter 5
Julia kicked her shoes off the moment she stepped inside, her feet aching from being on them all day. She crossed the living room and dropped onto the couch, propping her sore feet on the coffee table with a sigh.
Only now did she notice the quiet.
The night ahead loomed long and empty. She reached for the remote and flipped through her streaming services, finding nothing that held her interest. After a few minutes, she switched the TV off and opened her laptop, telling herself she’d get ahead on next week’s work.
An hour later, she’d answered two emails, reread the same invoice three times, and spent far too much time thinking about a man who had never promised her anything.
Not so many weeks ago, she would have been getting ready for club night. Now, she was sitting alone in an apartment that suddenly felt too large.
Wednesday and Saturday nights used to have a rhythm to them. A reason to get dressed up. Somewhere to be. People expecting to see her.
She’d built her week around those nights without realizing it. The anticipation. The assurance that something waited for her outside of work, errands, and an empty apartment.
And, if she was brutally honest with herself, she missed the woman she’d been back then. More confident. More certain. Less inclined to second-guess herself.
She missed who she’d been with Leland, too. Hopeful.
That realization hit harder than she liked.
So, she did what she’d sworn she wouldn’t: showered, dressed, and ordered an Uber.
The Driftwood in Miami Beach wasn’t as rough as The Underground North. The lighting was softer, the décor more intentional. At first glance, it seemed closer to what she wanted.
Scenes unfolded on raised platforms under spotlights. Crowds gathered around them, as if they were watching performers instead of participants. Nobody seemed unhappy. Nobody seemed particularly connected either.
Julia moved deeper into the room, looking for the sense of community she’d once had.
She didn’t find it. Some details felt familiar enough to suggest the same owner.
The music was loud. The bouncers were big, and they watched the room without really seeing it, as disengaged as their counterparts in North Miami.
Julia didn’t stop at the bar for a drink she wouldn’t finish. Her attention drifted, observing without lingering, taking in the dynamics that weren’t wrong, just not what she was used to.
A dom approached her near the edge of the floor. Mid-forties, confident, polished.
“Looking for a scene?”
“I’m new and getting a feel for the place tonight. But thank you.” She smiled when she said it. Polite, but final.
He nodded and moved on.
A few minutes later, a couple intercepted her.
The woman, shorter than her by a few inches, dressed in royal blue that somehow managed to look elegant rather than theatrical, was clearly the dominant partner.
Cool and discerning, the domme’s eyes swept over her, like she’d already decided she was worth her time.
The man, standing to the side and slightly behind her, was a solid, broad-shouldered presence. His unwavering gaze wasn’t fixed on her, but on the commanding figure of the domme, an intriguing detail that pricked her interest.
“We’ve watched you circling the room,” the woman said. “Trying to decide whether you want to stay.”
“Am I that obvious?” Julia asked with a hint of smile.
“To those who know what to look for? Yes.” Her gaze sharpened. “You’re not looking for random. You’re looking for a connection. Am I right?”
Julia’s lips parted. Her directness didn’t catch her off guard so much as how she’d read her perfectly.
With a knowing grin, the domme tilted her head toward the man at her side. “This is Marcus. I’m Lady Jane. We’re looking for a submissive third. He’ll top you. I’ll top the two of you. With us, you get the best of both worlds and a whole lot of attention.”
Julia blinked once. An FMF ménage hadn’t been on her radar tonight. She’d seen them before, fascinated by the dynamic.
“You’d like it,” the woman added calmly. “Especially the surrender part.”
For one second, Julia considered saying yes. Not because she wanted them specifically, but because the offer itself stirred the restlessness and the loneliness inside her. The idea of being wanted that way. Seen that way. Getting to please—two at a time.
Reality snapped back into place. With everything in her life already shifting beneath her feet, this was not the time to complicate things more than they already were.
“No, thank you,” she said. “Although I’m genuinely flattered.”
The domme studied her for a second longer, seeming to understand more than Julia wanted her to.
“It would be different. I get it. But stepping outside of your comfort zone can be freeing and introduce you to a helluva lot more than you ever expected.”
“Not tonight,” she insisted quietly.
Lady Jane inclined her head. “I figured, but you caught Marcus’s eye, so it was worth a shot.” Her toned gentled. “Don’t close yourself off forever. You’ll miss all the fun stuff.”
She winked at her, touched her sub’s arm, and guided him away.
Julia watched them disappear into the crowd before finally exhaling. Shakier than before, she resumed circling and observing.
A couple had taken over a bench near the wall. Their scene was careful, deliberate, and technically sound. The dom checked in, but not to the point of disrupting, responding quickly to the sub who seemed eager to please.
There were no missteps that she could see, and no lines crossed. But it was completely flat. Worse, there was no real connection. As an observer, it left her cold.
Julia moved on.
Near the center of the room, a small crowd had gathered around a suspension demonstration. Ropes hung from a freestanding frame, the dom working methodically, explaining as he went. His partner stood patiently, allowing herself to be positioned, tied, adjusted.
Julia drifted closer despite herself.
The knots were clean, if a little basic. Julia could have stepped in and done as well. Better, if she were honest.
Her mind drifted to another set of ropes. A different night. A different man.
Not the same. Not even close.
She moved out of the circle of spectators and drifted to the perimeter, taking in the room as a whole. Unsure what to do next, she simply stood there. Home sounded good—but lonely.
“You look like me.”
Julia glanced over. The woman standing beside her looked to be in her early thirties. Dark curls spilled over one shoulder, and her smile carried an easy warmth that felt out of place in the crowded club.
“How’s that?” Julia asked.
“You’re here,” the woman said, a Southern cadence rounding the words. “But you’re not finding it, either.”
That earned a genuine smile. “I guess that makes us kindred submissives. I’m Julia.”
“Rachel. I keep thinkin’ it’s the place,” she went on. The accent lingered without overpowering the words. Tennessee, maybe. Or Georgia. “Like if I try enough clubs, eventually one will feel right.”
“And it hasn’t.” It wasn’t a question.
“Nope.” She tipped one shoulder up in a half shrug. “But I’ve kept at it. Apparently, I’m stubborn as a mule.”
“I’m not sure I can match your tenacity,” Julia said with a sigh. “I think I’m going to head out. This just isn’t for me.”
“What about something besides a club? There’s a munch in Deerfield Beach next week,” Rachel added. “Smaller group. More low-key. Might be worth checking out.”
Julia almost laughed. “I know it.”
Rachel’s brows lifted. “You do?”
“I used to go.”
“Why’d you stop?”
Devil opened his home.
“Things changed,” she said instead.
Rachel studied her then crooked her finger. “Come with me for a second.”
Julia hesitated a beat, but followed her toward the alcoves, where a scene was already in progress. Not exactly a scene. A lesson.
An older dom stood behind a younger man holding a flogger, calmly adjusting his grip and stance while a kneeling sub waited patiently on a platform in front of them. Mid-forties, maybe, broad through the shoulders, sleeves rolled to his forearms. He exuded confidence and quiet authority.
“See how tense your wrist is?” he asked evenly. “Relax it, or you’ll throw too much from the elbow. Let the weight do the work.”
The younger dom tried. Better this time.
The instructor gave a small nod. “Good. Again.”
Rachel moved closer, and said softly, “That’s Master Jonathan. He’s one of the better ones here. Careful. Not flashy. Knows how to read a sub.” She paused. “Still looking for the one, though.”
Julia didn’t answer, just watched.
The older man moved around the kneeling woman, adjusting her posture with a light touch beneath her chin and along her back, encouraging a deeper arch.
It was less about putting on a show and more about the quiet authority that came with experience.
He controlled the scene without needing to command the room around him.
For a second, temptation tugged at her. This was why she’d come here, wasn’t it? To move on. To feel something again. But he reminded her too much of the man she was trying—and failing—to forget.
Stop it, a voice in her head demanded.
It wouldn’t be the same. Different voice. Different touch. Different instincts.
The flogger rose again. Demonstrating another throw, the mentor snapped the tails lightly over the woman’s thighs. Before the next one, he paused, pushing up his sleeves to his elbows.
Julia’s breath caught. Not because of the stroke. Because of the dark ink winding up his forearm and disappearing beneath the rolled fabric. It was too much. Too familiar.
She looked away, clearing her throat. “I think I’m done for the night.”
Rachel studied her, not pushing. “Fair enough. But before you go, I want to give you something.”
She led her to the bar where she grabbed a cocktail napkin and a pen from behind the counter, jotting something down quickly before sliding it to her.
“There’s a private play party coming up soon,” she said. “Invite-only. Better crowd. I can bring a guest.”
Julia looked at the napkin. Time. Location. A name she didn’t recognize. Even though she already knew she wasn’t going, she nodded as though she might, tucked it into her wristlet wallet, and headed for the exit.
It was raining when she stepped outside. The doors shut behind her with a dull thud, muffling the noise of the club. She paused on the sidewalk, looking around for her ride. A warm rain drifted down from a low blanket of clouds, soaking her instantly.
She closed her eyes and stood there dripping, taking stock. Coming here didn’t make her feel better, but it didn’t make her feel worse, either. That was progress, she supposed.
Maybe Lady Jane had been right. Maybe she was closing herself off. Or maybe the problem wasn’t the clubs, or the doms. What if every road she tried to take led her to the same impossible place? Back to him?
At the honk of a horn, she opened her eyes. An Uber idled at the curb. Julia raised her hand and headed that way.
As she stepped out of the circle of light, she noticed the small camera above the entrance. Its red indicator light blinked steadily through the rain. Tracking and recording.
Self-conscious suddenly, and aware of the way her dress clung to her body, her nipples hard and obvious through the drenched material, she folded her arms over her chest and hurried toward the waiting car.
***
He remained where the shadows allowed him to go unnoticed, beyond the spill of light from the entrance.
The rain had started again. Drizzling at first, getting steadier, it kept people from lingering outside.
Some hurried toward their cars, heads down, keys already in hand, attention split between the night and whatever waited for them at home.
It made them easier to approach. Easier to manage.
Not her.
She was alone when she stepped outside and paused, as if orienting herself. The rain darkened her hair and dress, both clinging to her skin. She didn’t seem to notice. Or didn’t care.
He watched the way she stood there. Not uncertain. Unmoored. A subtle distinction, but an important one.
He recognized the strain beneath her composure. Most people missed it, distracted by surfaces—beauty, charm, and performance. He looked for what people tried to hide. And tonight, something underneath her surface had cracked.
For a moment, he allowed himself to consider the obvious. He was human, after all.
The rain-soaked fabric outlined her body as she stood there.
Distracted. Exposed. Accessible. Desire tightened low, uncomfortable enough he adjusted the front of his jeans.
Irritation followed immediately. He couldn’t afford to be sloppy or undisciplined.
He wasn’t a fool who mistook impulse for instinct.
The waiting and planning mattered. Allowing the anticipation to sharpen before acting. Patience separated predators from amateurs.
As she moved toward the curb, he noticed the camera over the entrance—tracking and recording—and retreated farther into the shadows.
Headlights swept over her as a car pulled up. Summoned and expected. She lifted her hand briefly then closed the distance to the waiting vehicle.
She slid into the seat without looking around. No second check. Trusting the moment to be what it appeared to be. And like that, she was gone.
He didn’t move. There would be other chances. Better ones. Safer ones for him.
Besides, he craved the process—the planning, the anticipation, and the careful construction of the trap—as much as the culmination, turning denial to defiance and defiance into surrender. Cruelty was essential, but it had to be calculated and precise.
Anything less ruined the experience.
He turned and walked away, keeping to the shadows, avoiding surveillance and streetlights. No need to linger now, or to risk exposure. What mattered had already happened.
His decision was made. He’d selected his prey.
And once chosen, he never turned back.
