ZERION

The drunk's wrist feels fragile beneath my grip, bones shifting under wine-softened flesh.

Around us, conversations halt mid-sentence as nobles crane their necks to witness whatever spectacle is about to unfold.

The crystal chandeliers overhead cast fractured light across dozens of faces frozen in anticipation.

"Wouldn't do what?" he slurs, blinking owlishly as if my words require translation into a language his sodden brain can process.

I position myself between him and Kessara, my body creating a barrier that leaves no doubt about my intentions. "Touch what doesn't belong to you."

His laugh comes out as a wet cough that reeks of expensive wine and poor decisions. "Back in my day, elven lords shared human pussy like a fine cigar to be passed around the table." He gestures vaguely with his free hand, nearly losing his balance. "No reason that should change now, eh?"

Every muscle fiber in my body is wound tight, violence singing through my veins with the clarity of a blade drawn from its sheath. The careful control I've maintained for decades—the mask of civilized nobility—cracks like ice under pressure.

He lunges forward again, reaching past me toward Kessara with drunken determination.

Something inside me snaps.

I twist his arm with surgical precision, feeling the exact moment when bone separates from bone with a wet crack that echoes through the suddenly silent ballroom. His scream tears through the air—high, gargled, inhuman. The sound a man makes when pain strips away every pretense of dignity.

He crumples to the polished marble floor, cradling his shattered arm against his chest while blood from his bitten tongue stains his chin. Around us, gasps ripple through the crowd like stones dropped in still water.

"Dear gods," someone whispers.

"Did you see—"

"His arm—"

Lady Vespira steps forward with the practiced composure of someone accustomed to managing crises at her gatherings.

Her face remains perfectly neutral, but I catch a calculating gleam in her eyes as she surveys the scene—the broken noble writhing on her ballroom floor, the shocked guests, the scandal already writing itself in their minds.

"Guards," she calls, her voice cutting through the whispered chaos with aristocratic authority.

Two uniformed men materialize from their posts along the walls, moving with the efficient precision of professionals. They flank the injured noble without hesitation, clearly accustomed to removing unwanted elements from Lady Vespira's events.

"Remove Lord Ludric from my home," she instructs coolly. "Ensure he receives medical attention once he's off my property."

The guards lift him between them, his broken arm dangling at an unnatural angle as they half-carry, half-drag him toward the ballroom's grand entrance.

His whimpering fades as they disappear through the doorway, leaving behind only the lingering scent of spilled wine and the electric tension of violence barely contained.

I straighten my jacket with deliberate calm, as if breaking a man's arm requires nothing more than minor wardrobe adjustment.

I let my gaze sweep across the remaining nobles, each face a study in carefully controlled shock and fascination. The silence stretches taut as a bowstring, broken only by the distant sound of Lord Ludric's moaning as the guards haul him through the estate's corridors.

"Let me be abundantly clear." My voice carries easily through the ballroom, each word dropping into the silence like stones into deep water. "Anyone who touches her will discover that Lord Ludric received the gentler option."

A few of the younger nobles shift uncomfortably, their eyes darting between me and the bloodstain on the marble where Ludric fell. Lady Selmyra's mouth opens slightly, then snaps shut as she apparently thinks better of whatever protest she'd planned.

"Furthermore," I continue, noting how several conversations have ceased entirely, "the endless speculation about my household arrangements has become tedious beyond measure.

I suggest you find more stimulating topics of discussion, as you bore me and my preference for entertainment is not something you wish to endure. "

Lady Vespira glides forward with the fluid grace of someone determined to salvage her evening. Her silk gown rustles softly as she positions herself between me and her stunned guests, a practiced smile brightening her features.

"Lord Morvath, you are welcome in my home.

" She inclines her head with perfect courtesy, as if men don't regularly have their bones shattered in her ballroom.

"And welcome to your lovely companion. Please accept my sincerest apologies for Lord Ludric's appalling behavior.

Too much wine makes fools of us all, I'm afraid. "

"Your hospitality is impeccable as always, Lady Vespira."

She claps her hands together, the sound sharp enough to break the remaining spell of shock hanging over the room. "Music, if you please. Dancing is exactly what we need to restore the proper spirit to this gathering."

The musicians, who had frozen mid-note when Ludric's scream pierced the air, hastily resume their waltz. Couples begin to move toward the dance floor with the determined enthusiasm of people desperate to appear normal after witnessing something decidedly abnormal.

I feel Kessara's fingers brush against my arm—the barest touch, but enough to tell me she's shaken despite the composed mask she wears.

Her breathing remains steady, her posture straight, but that small contact betrays what her expression conceals.

The knowledge sends an unexpected warmth through my chest.

"Shall we?" I extend my hand toward the dance floor.

She takes it without hesitation, though I catch the tremor in her fingers before she steadies herself. We move together across the polished marble, past nobles who part like water around us, their whispered conversations resuming in our wake.

I draw her into the waltz position, my hand settling at the small of her back where I can feel the tension thrumming through her body. She fits against me perfectly—close enough that I catch the faint scent of lavender from whatever soap the servants used to prepare her for tonight.

"Are you hurt?" The question comes out rougher than intended.

"No." Her hazel eyes meet mine directly, no trace of the fear I know she must be feeling. "Though I suspect my reputation just took another beating."

"Your reputation was already in ruins the moment you stepped foot in my house. If anything, darling, this is an improvement." I smirk, feeling a deep and nearly primal satisfaction. "No one would dare touch you now."

Her lips press into a thin line, that stubborn tilt to her chin appearing despite the elegant gown and carefully arranged hair. "Don't call me that."

"What? Darling?" The word rolls off my tongue with deliberate emphasis, and I find myself genuinely amused that this—of all things—is what has her bristling after watching me shatter a man's bones. "I fail to see the issue."

"It's degrading." Her voice carries the sharp edge I've come to recognize as her particular brand of defiance. "And that's what she calls you."

The reference to Selmyra sends an unexpected flicker of satisfaction through my chest. So she's been paying attention to more than just her duties around the estate.

I pull her closer, feeling the warmth of her body against mine as the waltz carries us in slow circles around the dance floor.

Her breath catches slightly as I brush a strand of dark hair from her neck, my fingers lingering against the soft skin there.

"Then what would you prefer?" My voice drops to a whisper meant only for her ears. "Sweet? Precious? Beautiful?" Each word is a deliberate caress against the shell of her ear. "Or perhaps something more... intimate?"

The flush that spreads across her cheeks has absolutely nothing to do with the warmth of the ballroom, and everything to do with the way her pulse jumps beneath my fingertips where they rest at her throat.

She opens her mouth to respond, but her words are lost as the whispered conversations around us suddenly sharpen into focus.

"—lost complete control of his judgment—"

"—acting like a barbarian over some human—"

"—clearly been seduced beyond reason—"

My jaw tightens as the gossip filters through the music, each whispered word a calculated blade aimed at my reputation. I continue the dance, my movements never faltering even as my gaze sweeps the ballroom with predatory precision. It doesn't take long to locate the source.

Selmyra stands near the refreshment table, her eyes gleaming under the chandeliers as she leans close to Lord and Lady Caelum.

Her silver eyes glitter with malicious satisfaction as she speaks in hushed tones, her elegant hands gesturing subtly in our direction.

Whatever poison she's spreading, they're drinking it eagerly—their faces reflecting the perfect combination of shock and scandalized delight that feeds noble gossip for months.

Rage builds in my chest just like a slow-burning fire. The calculated nature of her attack becomes crystal clear. If she cannot have me as a husband, she's determined to destroy my standing entirely. Better to rule over ruins than watch someone else claim what she considers rightfully hers.

"We've accomplished what we came here for." I guide Kessara toward the dance floor with smooth steps.

Lady Vespira approaches us with her practiced hostess smile, clearly hoping to end the evening on a civilized note after the earlier violence. "Lord Morvath, I do hope you've enjoyed the gathering despite the... unfortunate incident."

"Your hospitality has been illuminating, Lady Vespira." I incline my head with formal courtesy.

Kessara steps forward, a glint in her hazel eyes that speaks of trouble.

"It's fascinating how some people define hospitality, isn't it?

True welcome means protecting your guests from predators—not just cleaning up the blood afterward.

It's lucky My Lord's reflexes are so swift.

" Her smile is razor-sharp beneath the veneer of politeness.

"Perhaps you might consider what that really means. "

Lady Vespira's composed mask slips for just a moment, her eyes widening at the boldness of the statement. The implication hangs in the air like smoke—that she failed in her duty as hostess by allowing Ludric's behavior in the first place.

"It was a lovely party, your Ladyship," Kessara adds with a gentle but beaming smile.

I place my hand at the small of Kessara's back, feeling the tension thrumming through her body as we move toward the ballroom's grand entrance. My fingers trace along her spine through the silk of her gown, a possessive touch that sends whispers rippling through the nobles we pass.

The night air hits us as we step outside, cool and clean after the stifling atmosphere of aristocratic pretense. My carriage waits in the circular drive, the equus stamping impatiently in their traces.

I help her inside, my hands lingering at her waist longer than strictly necessary as I lift her up into the plush interior. Her fingers brush mine as she settles into the seat, and for a moment, the space between us crackles with something far more dangerous than mere scandal.
