Chapter 140
Chapter one hundred forty
Remy
Downstairs the Earls have arrived. They picked up comfort food, daube with spaghetti.
I clap David on the back. “Thanks for always feeding us.”
“It wasn’t me today,” David says.
“He was tired, so I cooked one of my favorite dishes, and by that I mean…” James starts.
“He ordered takeout from his favorite place,” David’s tone is wry.
“If it’s daube, it must be Wednesday at Mandina’s,” James finishes as he starts opening bags.
“I did grab a Malbec that’ll pair well,” David adds.
“Sounds perfect. Erik and Tianna should be down shortly. I’m not sure where Meg is. I’ll text her.”
Fishing out my phone, I shoot Meg a text.
“How are you holding up?” James asks.
“The last twenty-four hours must have been brutal,” David says as he starts pouring from the first bottle.
Grabbing the silverware and napkins, I start setting the table.
“It’s been a lot. Can’t lie, I’m nervous having our leak be the former bane of my existence. In hindsight, she does seem protective over Tianna. I don’t like leaving something this important out of my control.”
They both nod, muttering sounds of assent.
David begins setting the wine beside the place settings.
Hearing a faint scratching, I realize the dogs must be ready to come in from their evening romp and head toward the sunroom door.
I hear Meg call, “I’ll let them in,” as she comes down the hall. I can’t miss both brothers stiffening and exchanging a glance before forcing themselves to relax. David does a better job than James, who keeps darting glances towards the other room.
