Chapter 63 Rhyland
Rhyland
The cave entrance looms before us like the gaping maw of some ancient, eldritch horror, a yawning void that seems to swallow the very light itself. The cave mouth is framed by twisting vines and what looks like two female statues.
The dense forest surrounding us is a claustrophobic tangle of gnarled trees and twisted vines, their leaves rustling in the faint breeze like the whispers of long-dead spirits.
The only sound is the distant roar of a waterfall, its thunderous echo reverberating through the stillness like the heartbeat of some slumbering titan.
It's taken us the better part of the day to trek to this godforsaken spot, with Erik Dani and myself loaded down like pack mules with enough gear to supply a small army.
Water, food, and enough vials of Dani's blood to keep us going if shit hits the fan.
We took one dose on the ship before we hit ground.
She offered some of her blood to Lucian, too, but the stubborn bastard turned her down—something about Seraphina giving him all the sustenance he needed. I just hope to fuck he's right.
It warms the cockles of my heart to see those two lovebirds getting closer by the day.
It's only a matter of time before Lucian grows a pair and seals the bond, and then he'll never have to worry about losing himself to the bloodlust or any of the other hellish shit our kind goes through without a mate.
Which brings me to Erik, the stoic son of a bitch.
Don't get me wrong, the man's a goddamn force of nature, with a patience and endurance that would put a monk to shame.
But even he has his limits, and I can only pray to whatever fucked-up gods are listening that he finds his mate soon, before the loneliness and the hunger drive him to the brink of madness.
Gideon dropped anchor a mile off the shore, and Dani portaled us onto this godforsaken rock they call Tempest Isle, not wanting to take our chances with the Sirens and Jesus; this place is creepy as fuck.
The massive island is a sprawling expanse of jagged cliffs and dense jungle stretching forever.
As we made our way inland, we passed the crumbling remains of ancient civilizations, their stone statues and ruined temples a silent testament to the passage of time and the fragility of life.
And now, here we stand, at the threshold of the unknown, our path lit only by the faint glow of Dani's light. The cave yawns before us like the mouth of some primordial beast.
"Shall we proceed?" Erik inquires from behind me. "Is this indeed the path that leads to the lyre?"
It's a damn good question and one I don't have a fucking answer to. Dani spent more time with Mirella after our little storytime session, poring over her notes and trying to make sense of this whole lyre situation while Erik and I scrounged up gear for this little excursion.
"Yeah, can't you hear the whispers?" Dani asks, her voice serious and sass. Erik and I exchange a look of pure fucking confusion. We don't hear jack shit.
"According to Mirella's notes, the path to the lyre starts with a cave opening marked by whispers and two siren statues that weep saltwater," Dani explains, scanning the entrance with keen intensity.
Intrigued, I start walking toward the statues, my boots crunching on the dense underbrush with each step. As I draw closer, I'll be damned if those creepy-ass statues aren't actually crying, silent tears streaming down their stone faces like some fucked-up fountain.
"Looks like we're on the right track after all," I mutter, turning back to face them. We exchange a brief nod before heading into the cave mouth, our weapons at the ready.
I take the lead, hacking through the thick vines with my sword like a machete.
Erik does the same on the other side, his blade flashing in the dim light as he clears a path.
I move the sliced vines out of Dani's way, holding them back so she can duck underneath without getting tangled up in the mess.
As we pass the siren statues, I can't help but notice their eerie expressions.
One is the picture of sorrow, her features contorted in a mask of eternal grief, while the other wears a smile that's just a little too wide, a little too gleeful for comfort.
It's creepy as hell, and I can feel the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end as we venture deeper into the cave.
The air grows colder and damper with each step, the sound of our footsteps echoing off the stone walls like the beating of some giant, invisible heart. The darkness seems to press in on us from all sides, broken only by the faint glow of Dani's ball of light as she leads the way.
"So, what other nuggets of wisdom did Mirella impart upon you, baby? I'd like to know we're not just wandering around this dank-ass cave for shits and giggles," I ask, my voice echoing off the stone walls as I bring up the rear.
"Well, according to her, we should watch for a flooded chamber, a coral bridge, a harmonious pool..." Dani trails off, her brow furrowing as she tries to recall all the details Mirella shared with her. "Oh, and a melody chamber, followed by an altar that glows with light."
"And we're supposed to find these things in that exact order?" I can't help but ask, my tone skeptical. It all sounds a little too convenient, a little too much like a fucking video game quest for my liking.
"Yup!" Dani quips back, her voice brimming with confidence. "I've got it all memorized, locked, and loaded in my big, beautiful brain. Mirella and I went over it multiple times, just to be sure."
And the thing is, I believe her. If there's one thing I know about my girl, she's smart as a whip and twice as deadly. Her scientific mind is like a fucking steel trap, latching onto every little detail and refusing to let go until she's got it all figured out.
The sound of rushing water reaches my ears, growing louder with each step, and I know we must be getting close to the first of Mirella's landmarks—the flooded chamber.
I tighten my grip on my sword, my senses on high alert as we round a corner and find ourselves standing at the edge of a vast, underground lake.
"Well, would you look at that," I mutter, my eyes scanning the chamber for any signs of danger, "Mirella knew her shit after all."
I realize this isn't just some ordinary flooded chamber as we approach the water's edge. No, this is something else entirely. The water is crystal-clear, almost unnaturally so, and glowing algae illuminate it from within, casting an ethereal, greenish-blue light throughout the cavern.
But that's not even the creepiest part. I hear whispers as we stand here, taking in the surreal beauty. They are faint at first but grow louder with each passing second.
"She's here."
The Savior…"
"It's her…"
"What the actual fuck?" I mutter, my grip tightening on my sword as I scan the chamber for signs of danger. But there's nothing there—just the glowing water, the whispering echoes, and a strange, circular stone platform rising from the flooded chamber's center.
I can see that the platform is covered in intricate engravings, a complex web of symbols and patterns that seem to hint at some greater meaning.
And in the center of it all, carved into the very heart of the stone, are a series of instruments.
Lyres, harps, flutes...it's like a fucking miniature orchestra.
Damn, this place just keeps getting weirder and weirder.
We dive into the glowing water without a second thought, swimming towards the raised platform.
I help Dani first, my hands gripping her waist as I hoist her onto the stone.
Erik and I follow close behind, our eyes scanning the intricate engravings covering every inch of the platform.
"So, do you have any ideas what these fancy squiggles mean?" Dani asks as she crouches down to examine them closer.
I lean in, my brow furrowed in concentration as I study the symbols. There are otherwordly looking designs, but if I had to guess—musical notes etched beneath each instrument—drums, flute, harp, and of course, the fucking lyre. But here's the thing...I can't read music for shit.
"Don't look at me, baby," I mutter, shaking my head. "I'm about as musically literate as a tone-deaf goat."
"This oval-shaped note with a stem represents a half note, lasting two beats," Erik explains, his voice calm and measured as he points to each symbol.
"The open oval is a whole note, four beats.
The filled oval with a stem is a quarter note, one beat.
And this filled oval with a stem and a flag is an eighth note, lasting half a beat. "
I stare at him, my jaw practically hitting the fucking floor. "Since when did you become a goddamn music prodigy?"
Erik shrugs, silver eyes glinting. "I used to play the piano, brother. A very long time ago."
Dani, meanwhile, is off in her own little world, her head cocked to the side like she's listening to something only she can hear. "They're telling us to play the musical notes," she murmurs, her voice distant and dreamy.
I glance around the chamber. "Play them with what, exactly? I don't see any fucking instruments lying around."
"We hum," Erik replies like it's the most obvious thing in the world. He turns to Dani, his expression serious. "Hum this beat, Dani." He demonstrates a note, and Dani mimics it perfectly. Then he does the same for me, and soon enough, we're all humming in harmony like some otherworldly choir.
And that's when the magic happens. As our voices blend, words materialize on the stone above the musical notes, glowing with an eerie, pulsing light.
"Holy hell," I breathe, my eyes widening in awe. "Is that...a song?"
Erik nods, his long silver hair falling into his eyes, his gaze intense as he reads the words aloud.
"In the calm, the light shall glow,
with a whisper where secrets flow.
Melodies of joy we weave,
to unlock the path, we believe."
We fall silent, waiting with bated breath for something—anything—to happen. But the chamber remains still and quiet. The only sound is the gentle lapping of the water against the platform.
"Okay, so...now what?" I ask, my voice echoing off the stone walls.
Erik frowns. "Perhaps we need to sing the melody," he suggests, his tone thoughtful. "Like this..."
And then, to my utter fucking amazement, he begins to sing. His voice is soft and haunting, the notes rising and falling like the ebb and flow of the tide. Dani and I exchange a glance, our eyes wide with wonder, before joining in, our voices blending in a harmony that sends shivers down my spine.
As we sing, the chamber begins to change. The water starts to glow even brighter, pulsing in time with the rhythm of our song. The engravings on the platform shimmer and shift, revealing hidden pathways and secret doors that were invisible before.
And then, with a final, resounding note, the chamber falls silent again. But everything has changed. The path forward is clear now, illuminated by the soft, pulsing glow of the water.
"Damn, that was some seriously impressive shit," I mutter. "Didn't see that coming."
Dani grins, her eyes sparkling as she turns to Erik. "No kidding, Mr. Stoic," she quips. "Who knew you had such a set of pipes on you?"
Erik smirks slightly, his expression as unreadable as ever."I am a man of many talents, Little Huntress. But perhaps we should focus on the task at hand."
"Right, right," Dani says, waving a hand dismissively. "Guess we'd better see where this yellow brick road leads, huh?"
I nod. "Damn straight, baby. Let's get this over with."
I can't help but think if Erik wasn't here to unfuck this music situation, where the hell would that leave us? Up shit creek without a goddamn paddle, that's where.
Shaking my head, we head through the now visible door, our weapons at the ready and our hearts pounding with anticipation. Erik takes the lead, his movements precise and calculated as he scans the path ahead for any signs of danger.
The passage is narrow and winding, the walls slick with moisture and glowing with that same eerie, pulsing light. But we press on, our footsteps echoing off the stone as we venture deeper and deeper into the heart of the cave.
And then, just when I'm starting to wonder if this fucking tunnel is ever going to end, we emerge into a vast, open chamber that takes my breath away.
The walls are lined with shimmering crystals, each pulsing with a different color—blue, green, red, and purple.
And in the center of the room, rising from a raised dais, is a sight that makes my heart skip a beat.
It's the coral bridge. The second landmark on Mirella's list. And it's even more breathtaking than I could have imagined.
The bridge is a masterpiece of natural beauty. It is a delicate arch of living coral that spans a chasm so deep and dark that it seems to have no bottom. The colors are vibrant and alive, shades of pink, orange, and red that seem to glow from within.
"Holy shit," I breathe, my eyes wide with wonder. "Would you look at that?"
Dani nods, her long chocolate brown hair laying like wet silk down her back, her expression of pure awe. "It's incredible. I've never seen anything like it."
Even Erik seems impressed, his stoic facade cracking just the tiniest bit as he takes in the sight before us. "It is a marvel," he agrees, with genuine appreciation.
I step forward, my boots crunching on the rocky ground as I approach the chasm's edge. The bridge looks sturdy enough, but I know better than to take anything for granted in this fucked-up place.
"Alright, listen up," my voice low and serious. "We cross this thing one at a time, nice and slow. No sudden movements, no fucking around. Got it?"
Dani and Erik both nod, their expressions grim but determined. They know what's at stake here and are not about to let anything stand in our way.
So, with a deep breath and a muttered prayer, I step out onto the bridge, my heart pounding as I begin to make my way across the chasm.
The coral is surprisingly sturdy beneath my feet, but I can feel it shifting and swaying with each step, a reminder of just how fragile this whole fucking setup is.
The howling winds roar up from the dark chasm beneath my feet, their force nearly knocking me on my ass.
But I keep going, my gaze fixed straight ahead as I put one foot in front of the other. And then, when I think I might make it to the other side without incident, I hear a sound that makes my blood run cold.
A crack. A fucking crack in the coral echoes through the chamber like a gunshot.
Before I can react, the bridge crumbles beneath my feet, the once-solid surface giving way to a gaping void of nothingness. I lunge forward, my hands scrabbling for purchase on the rocky ledge, but it's too late. I'm falling; Dani's scream is all I hear as I plummet into the darkness below.
"RHYLAND!"
