Epilogue
Danika
Sydney giggles, pulling the popcorn off my lap so she can have some more. I hope she eats as much as she wants. She’s looking like she lost some weight and not that exercise-y way.
I’m so glad that they’ve come out the week after my birthday to celebrate with me. These girls have been my ride or die for years and I’m glad that even though now I have a boyfriend, I can still make time for my girls.
“What about you, sweet Syd, what do you wanna watch?”
I turn to see if she’ll take my side or Margot’s but when we make eye contact, her eyes are watery and I can immediately tell something is not right.
“Sydney?” I pull the popcorn off her lap and grab her hand. “What’s wrong?”
Margot’s up and on the other side of her side, grabbing her other hand. “Is it your sister?”
Sydney shakes her head but the tears start to pour and I have no idea what to do.
“Sweetie, are you okay?”
“No, you guys, I’m sorry,” she starts, wiping her face with the back of her hand. “I’ve been keeping something from you this year and I can’t do it anymore.”
“What is it, Syd?” Margot asks because my throat is suddenly full, with my heart blocking the way. For some reason, my gut already knows what she’s about to say.
“My sister isn’t the one who’s sick. She doesn’t have cancer,” Sydney sobs before continuing, as if it’s the worst thing she’s ever had to do. And I’m sure it is because the next thing she says is the worst thing I’ve ever heard in my life.
“I do.”
My jaw widens but doesn’t reach the floor until she hits us with the next piece of news.
“Oh. And I’m married.”
