Chapter 25

SABLE

It was after midnight by the time I got to bed. Alone.

They all walked me to my apartment and made sure I got inside safely. Forrest glanced at Woody before he did a walk-through of my apartment making sure no one else was lurking in the shadows.

I almost told him not to bother. Who but Woody would have?

Forrest hadn't found anyone, so he and Leif kissed me goodnight.

Woody flipped me off, and they all left.

I locked the door behind them and got ready for bed.

Sleep was elusive, my mind turning the whole day over and over. I'd almost died, and I'd seen someone killed.

It was what you might call a busy day.

Giving up on trying to sleep, I got up for a little while and played the piano, singing softly to myself.

The music helped to calm my mind. Soothe my frazzled soul.

Forrest was right, I should try to get back into it. Was I good enough to perform in front of a crowd? I was rusty, but surely after some practice I'd be okay. If not, at least I'd enjoy it. That was the main thing, wasn't it?

Struggling to keep my eyes open, I closed the piano and leaned against it for a few moments. Inhaling the smell of teak and the relative silence of my apartment. The only sound a vague thrum of traffic from outside. Very vague, considering how thick the windows were, and how high the apartment sat.

My phone rang, making me jump. That woke me up again.

I rose and snatched it up from the coffee table. Looked at the time. Who was calling me at 2:39 am? I squinted at the screen before pressed on it to accept the call.

"Savannah, are you okay?"

"Sable?" Her voice was high. Little more than a whimper.

"What is it?" I asked. "Where are you? I'll come and—"

"Sable," she said again. "Oh god, oh god. No."

The call ended.

"Savannah!" I cried into the handset.

I pulled up her number and tried calling her.

Straight to voicemail.

Where the hell was she and what happened to her?
