Chapter 4 #3

As soon as they arrived at the mansion, Gregory waved at the police and EMTs who were waiting for them.

“We’ve got men at the site of the accident,” Sgt. Melissa Stronger said. “I just need to get your statements.”

But in the meantime, the EMTs checked Sascha out first, bandaging her head where she had hit the side of the window frame. They worked on Raymond also, who had suffered whiplash and had windshield glass all over him. They gave him a prescription for the back pain. Sascha had fared much better.

Both of them spoke to the police sergeant about what they had seen before the accident, while Gregory listened in, furious that Sascha and his driver had been targeted, even though both believed Gregory was the subject the madman was after.

Especially since they saw who had swum out of the limo and neither was Gregory.

“What if we say you died in the accident?” the sergeant asked. “I mean, you could have still been in the limo.”

Gregory thought about it and wondered if that would work. Not that he wanted to put his businesses on hold or even pretend to everyone that he had died. But if whoever it was kept coming after him, then maybe they could catch him or them, and then things could go back to normal.

The sergeant got a call, and she said, “Okay, reporters are at the accident site and saying that everyone escaped the limo, which included the driver, Raymond Petrosky, and Sascha the Sensation.”

“Oh, great. Like I want to be tied to any of this,” Sascha said. “Then again, maybe they will realize I was just hired to do a job and nothing more.”

“That you’re not my girlfriend?”

She scoffed.

“Let’s get you inside, and you can shower and wear something of my sister’s,” Gregory said.

“If you need me, just call,” Raymond said.

“You’ve got the night off and several days after that until you’re feeling better. Take that medicine. I’ve used it before for back pain, and it knocked me right out.”

“All right, sir.” Raymond winked at Sascha and took off for the five-car garage that seemed to have an apartment above it.

Sascha let Gregory take her into the house, and he guided her to a guest bathroom upstairs while his guests’ jaws hung agape, and chatter began among them.

His sister, Rose, hurried to join him. “What happened? You just tore out of here before you even told me what the matter was. Though Stephanie said our delayed entertainment for the night was the reason.”

“Someone tried to kill me, only I wasn’t in the limo,” Gregory said, still furious that they could have killed Sascha and Raymond.

Rose’s eyes grew huge. “Ohmigod, not again. Why?”

“If we knew that, maybe we could solve the case.”

“I’ll get you some of my clothes,” Rose said to Sascha, hurrying past them on the circular stairs.

“Thanks,” Sascha said, though she sounded grouchy that Gregory hadn't taken her home.

But he wanted her to relax after the ordeal she had been through because of him, and then he’d take her home.

He worried that she might be in danger if anyone targeted his vehicles.

He thought of calling Prescott to see if he could arrange to pick her up and take her home instead, if she would be safer.

He realized then that everyone around him was at greater risk. In the past two attempts on his life, he’d been alone.

“There are extra towels in the cabinet, but you have plenty on the racks too. Rose will leave some clothes for you, and I’ll see you downstairs.”

He left Sascha alone in the bathroom while his sister hurried off down the hall to her bedroom.

He went downstairs and announced to his friends, “I’m afraid the party is over.

You might have heard that Raymond and Sascha were in an accident meant for me.

So we’ll call it a night and have this again some other time. ”

Stephanie shook her head and set her champagne glass down on a table. “I suppose Sascha is going to stay here with you so you can protect her. Or maybe, like Katrina, she’s here to protect you.”

“Goodnight, Stephanie.”

“Just don’t have her do a séance. You never know what she can dig up about you.”

Why would he want to dig up ghosts? If they even existed, or Sascha could do such a thing.

Everyone grabbed their personal items, apologized for the accident, and hoped Raymond and Sascha were okay. Except Stephanie. She looked pissed that the party was ending.

Then they all left the house.

Rose soon joined him. “You’re not going to have her entertain—” Then she noticed everyone was gone. She smiled. “Good. Poor Sascha needs a break.”

She did, and he wasn’t taking his money back. She could perform, or not, at some other time if she wanted to.

Then she came down the stairs, her hair dried, curly, and beautiful. She was wearing a tank top, a plaid shirt over it, and leggings. Anything she wore made her look sexy and his mouth water.

Sascha glanced around at the living area where a couple of maids were cleaning up after the party. “Everyone left?”

“Yeah. After what happened to you and Raymond, it was the right thing to do.”

“So what exactly happened?” Rose asked, getting them mugs of hot cocoa.
