Chapter 7 #2

Sascha swore she had the best hearing in the world. “I was telling Gregory that Stephanie, who is now after Gregory, isn’t interested in Damon.”

“Okay,” Lucy said telepathically to her and continued talking to her customer.

Kat was offering a future vision for a different customer.

“I’ll come and get you when the fair’s closing,” Gregory said, taking Sascha’s hand and kissing it. “I’ll see you later.”

Then he walked off, and she just stared after him.

Prescott said, “And he wondered how Kat cast a spell over me.”

Sascha laughed. “The same thing isn’t happening between Gregory and me.

He just wants help to try and figure out who’s gunning for him.

” Then she turned her attention to her next customer.

“You want to know if you’re going to get pregnant any time soon.

” Sascha smiled. “You are. The baby girl will be due in May.”

The woman held her stomach, burst into tears, and hurried off.

Sascha couldn’t keep her mouth from dropping wide open.

Smiling, Prescott said, “I guess that wasn’t the news she was waiting to hear.”

“After she tore off, I saw a glimpse of her relationship with her boyfriend, and he just broke up with her.”

“Oh, that’s awful.”

“Maybe, but maybe he wasn’t the right one for her anyway.” Then Sascha smiled at her next customer. “You would like a reading?”

“You just gave a reading to my ex-girlfriend, and she was crying. What did you tell her?” The boyfriend looked upset and concerned at the same time.

“She’s going to have your baby in May.”

The guy’s jaw dropped, and he said, “Shit.” Then he hurried after his ex-girlfriend.

“How’s that going to end?” Prescott asked.

“I have no idea.” Which was true. Sascha only saw bits and pieces of the past and the future. Then she smiled at the next customer. “Are you ready to get a reading?”

At lunchtime, Sascha was surprised to see Gregory return. “I’m not here for a reading this time, but to get you all something to eat.”

“I could have told you he was coming,” Kat said, finishing up with a customer.

“You envisioned it?” Sascha asked.

“Nope. Just a gut feeling.”

Unable to stay away from Sascha, and with no important business to attend to today, Gregory fully intended to buy lunch for Sascha, her cousins, and Prescott when it was time for the meal. He went around the back of Sascha’s booth and peeked in. “What does everyone want to eat?”

They all looked at him in surprise. “I returned to the fairground to get some brisket.”

“Brisket for me sounds great,” Prescott said.

“You know, I’ll have the same,” Sascha said. She hadn’t had a juicy brisket in a good long while.

Kat nodded. “Me too. And raspberry lemonade.”

“I’ll have the raspberry tea and curly fries,” Sascha said.

“Corned-dog ale for me,” Prescott said, “and the curly fries for both Kat and me.”

“Okay, got it. I’ll ask Lucy too.” Gregory left their tent, went to Lucy’s, and asked her the same question.

“Everyone’s having brisket? Me too. And raspberry tea,” Lucy said before taking care of her next customer.

“I’ll be right back,” Prescott said.

The whole family was speculating like crazy about why Gregory had actually returned to see them. He wondered if any of them had guessed that he would. He was afraid he would come too late and that they might have already eaten.

He picked up the orders for everyone and got a call from Rose. “Yeah, Rose?”

“Where are you? I thought we were going to have lunch together at Lemoynes.”

Damon’s main restaurant.

“Oh, sorry, I forgot all about it.”

“Are you going to be a little late?” Rose asked, sounding hopeful.

“Uh, no, I’m at the fairgrounds.”

“Why? You went there this morning. Did you stay there all day?”

“No, I left for a while. I just wanted some brisket and—”

“You’re eating with Sascha.”

“I’m getting everyone food.”

Rose didn’t say anything for a few minutes.

“I’m sorry, Rose. I didn’t mean to stand you up.”

“You’re bringing her home after the fair closes, right?”

“Uh, yeah.”

“Ask her what she would like for dinner, and I’ll make sure we have it.” Rose sounded like she was fine with being stood up if he was bringing Sascha home tonight.

“Thanks, Rose. Sorry for forgetting about our date. Marvin isn’t there, is he?”

“Nope. You were supposed to be. That’s okay. Damon’s coming over to talk to me. I suspect he has an ulterior motive.”

“Okay, well, don’t get mixed up with him. Lucy will have something to say about it.”

“For sure. Got to go. Enjoy your brisket.”

“Do you want to join us and have lunch at the fairgrounds?” Gregory asked.

“Nope. I’m having fine dining at its best. I’ll see you tonight.”

“Sorry, Rose. I’ll see you then.” Gregory never missed a date with Rose, especially now that she wasn’t dating anyone again. He felt really guilty about that, but she seemed to understand and was okay with it.

He really hoped Damon didn’t try to get involved with her.

Then he carried the bags of food back to the booths, giving Lucy hers first. Kat went over to take Lucy’s place at her booth while she ate.

He realized then that the cousins had to take turns so they could continue to work with customers.

After Lucy finished her lunch, Kat and Prescott ate theirs together behind the curtains of Sascha’s booth.

Gregory was glad that they did. He wanted to eat with Sascha, and he knew Prescott and Kat wanted to enjoy theirs together.

When he and Sascha finally were able to enjoy their meal together, she said, “Wow, this was such a surprise. And thanks. I love brisket.”

“Yeah, me too.”

“You’re not going to stay the whole time at the fair, are you, until I close up my booth?”

“Probably not. I’ll just come back and get you. It’s more fun to explore places when you have someone with you.”

“Like Stephanie?”
