Chapter fourteen

Hummingbird

A nightmare of being held at gunpoint by them again woke me and ruined all attempts of going back to sleep, so I went upstairs and decided to bake chocolate chip muffins.

Ever since Derek died, I didn’t want to sleep upstairs in our bedroom.

I could be up there during the day, but once it started getting dark outside, I felt better being downstairs.

Safer.

Less exposed.

I was both excited and worried about having a new person nearby.

I glanced out the window and let out a deep sigh. The silence oscillated wildly between peaceful and painful.

Could I trust another person? What would it be like to have friends again?

The oven timer went off, startling me, and I pulled the tray of muffins out.

As soon as the muffins were cool enough to remove from the pan, I piled them on the plate and went back downstairs.

The smell of freshly baked goods and chocolate put a smile on my face as I refilled my coffee mug, and I couldn’t help the borderline indecent moan that came out after taking the first bite.

These are delicious.
