CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

VERONICA

Dear Sebastian,

Missy came to see me yesterday. She spent a few hours and I told her all about us. Before you panic, no, I do not think she is going to run off and tell everyone about who I really am. Honestly, it was so nice to finally say it to someone other than Georgina.

Tomato’s now in my room, you got your forever wish. He’s officially an indoor cat.

Does he hate it? Sometimes. But mostly he just stays by my side; I think he’s happy to be out of the rain. It’s rained so much here lately. Is it raining where you are too?

Georgina finally told me that you were sent to Tria. Are you safe? I still haven’t heard anything from you but I’m sure a letter for me is coming soon.

In a few days Dr. Moore is supposed to check on the baby. I like him a lot.

When I know more, I will let you know. Until then, stay safe, okay?

I love you.

Forever,

Veronica

Dear Sebastian,

Guess what? Dr. Moore told Mary I need to be allowed out of my room. Yep, you read that right! This girl is officially going on daily walks in the garden starting this afternoon.

Don't worry, I’ll take your damn cat outside with me. He’s more like a dog than anything.

I miss you more than you know.

Forever,

Veronica.

Dear Sebastian,

Twins.

T W I N S.

Love,

Veronica

Dear Sebastian,

Do you think they will love the garden as much as we do?

I hope so. I don’t think I could handle either of them if they didn’t at least have some sort of love for it.

Imagine all of the adventures they are going to get up to when they can run in the grass?

All of the trouble that we will find them in.

I want to watch you play hide and seek with them. We are steering clear of the rose bushes though, I can’t handle another thorn incident.

Do you think they will eat blackberries right off the bush?

You always hated them when they first came in.

Do you remember that? How sour they were.

I still think you are wrong about liking them when they fully ripen.

The more sour they were, the better. Either way, I can’t wait to see how their cheeks and fingers turn purple with the juice.

I hope you’re okay. I miss you

Love,

Veronica.

Dear Sebastian,

Happy Birthday!

How does it feel to be twenty-four?

I’m sorry I haven’t written in a few weeks. Everything has been a bit hectic around here but hopefully it will smooth out soon. I still haven’t received a letter. Is everything okay? I’m not upset, I know you are probably just busy with things which is fine.

The twins are good. I am good.

I love you.

Veronica.

Dear Sebastian,

The silence from you is deafening.

Did you forget about me?

Forever?

Veronica.

Sebastian,

This is the last letter that I’ll be sending.

The mail came today. I watched the man hand a stack of letters to Georgina.

I know they were from you because I saw the softness in Georgina’s eyes when she received them.

All day I waited for her to come into my room and hand me my first letter from you.

It’s been months, but I didn’t even care, because I was finally getting one.

When Georgina came into my room, she didn’t have a letter. When I had asked her if there was one for me, she gave me a sad smile and she shook her head.

“Maybe next time, Veronica.”

Maybe next time.

Is there something I did to upset you? Was it the letters that I have sent that have you not wanting to send me one back?

You could at least have the goddamn decency to reply, even if it is a rejection.

I’d rather you tell me this was all a lie then continue to drive myself insane with thinking I’ve done something wrong.

How could I forget?

Afterall, I’m just the help.

Veronica.
