Chapter 17 The Gathering

The Honeycomb Bakery had never been this quiet.

Mia Rossi stood behind the counter with her hands resting on the polished wood.

The chairs had been arranged in a loose circle.

The display cases were empty.

The ovens were off.

Outside, Crystal Cove had settled into the soft darkness of evening.

Inside, five people sat waiting.

Beatrice.

Julian.

Greg.

Chloe.

And Sheriff Briggs.

No customers.

No music.

No cheerful conversations.

Only the faint ticking of the clock above the kitchen doorway.

Mia looked at each of them.

She could feel the tension in the room.

Julian sat with his hands folded.

Greg kept glancing toward the door.

Chloe sat upright, her eyes fixed on Mia.

Beatrice looked remarkably calm.

Too calm.

Mia took a breath.

"Thank you for coming."

Greg shifted in his chair.

"What's this about?"

Mia didn't answer immediately.

She walked to the center table.

On it sat the pieces she had collected.

The old napkin fragment.

The threatening note.

The photograph of the dead rat.

The small bottle of nutmeg oil.

The overturned spice jar.

The old jam recipe.

And the faded cat toy with the Crystal Cove Golden Jam logo.

Everyone stared.

Mia felt her heart pound.

She had imagined this moment many times.

In some versions, she was confident.

In others, she was terrified.

The reality was somewhere between the two.

Sheriff Briggs gave her a small nod.

Mia began.

"I called you all here because I believe I know who killed Harrison Finch."

Silence.

Greg's eyes widened.

Julian leaned forward.

Chloe remained still.

Beatrice simply watched Mia.

Mia continued.

"Harrison's murder wasn't random."

She picked up the napkin.

"He had secrets."

She placed it back down.

"He had enemies."

She looked at Julian.

"And he had people who had very personal reasons to hate him."

Julian's jaw tightened.

"I already told you, Mia. I didn't kill him."

"I know."

Julian looked surprised.

Mia turned toward Greg.

"And I know you lied about where you were."

Greg's face reddened.

"I explained that."

"You said you were at the tasting booth the entire time."

"I was."

"You weren't."

Greg looked at Sheriff Briggs.

"I made a mistake."

Mia nodded.

"You did."

She picked up the photograph of the security footage.

"You were behind the main stage arguing with Harrison."

Greg looked away.

"That doesn't mean I killed him."

"No."

Mia placed the photograph down.

"It doesn't."

She turned toward the spice jar.

"But someone poisoned him."

The room became completely still.

Mia lifted the jar carefully.

"Gingersnap found this near the dessert counter."

Beatrice's eyes flicked toward it.

Just once.

Mia noticed.

"This jar contained nutmeg."

Greg frowned.

"So?"

Mia looked at him.

"Nutmeg can be dangerous in large quantities."

Julian leaned back.

"Are you saying that's what killed him?"

"I'm saying it may have been the poison."

Sheriff Briggs spoke.

"The laboratory results will tell us for certain."

Mia nodded.

"And when they do, we'll know whether this jar is the key."

She set it down.

Then she picked up the nutmeg oil.

"This is what almost destroyed Chloe."

Chloe looked at the bottle.

Mia's voice softened.

"She was accused because this was found in her apron."

Greg looked at Chloe.

"I heard about that."

Chloe's face tightened.

"It wasn't mine."

Mia nodded.

"We know that now."

Beatrice shifted slightly in her chair.

Mia noticed.

"Because we found this."

She held up the note.

Everyone watched.

Mia read it aloud.

"Please keep the nutmeg oil for me until after the festival. I need it for the recipe we discussed. Don't leave it somewhere anyone can find it."

She lowered the paper.

"Signed by Beatrice."

The room went silent.

Beatrice didn't move.

Julian looked at her.

Greg stared.

Chloe's eyes narrowed.

Sheriff Briggs watched carefully.

Beatrice finally spoke.

"That doesn't prove anything."

"No."

Mia nodded.

"Not by itself."

She placed the note on the table.

"But it proves you gave Chloe the oil."

"I did."

"And asked her to keep it."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"I was experimenting with a recipe."

Mia nodded.

"A recipe involving nutmeg."

"Yes."

"Convenient."

Beatrice's eyes hardened.

"You think everything is a conspiracy."

"No."

Mia looked at her.

"I think everything is connected."

She picked up the old jam recipe.

"This belonged to your father."

Beatrice's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Mia saw it.

"How did you get that?" Beatrice asked.

"Gingersnap found it."

Beatrice looked toward the cat.

Gingersnap was sitting on the counter.

His eyes were fixed on her.

Mia continued.

"I found out about your partnership with Harrison."

Beatrice said nothing.

"You built a business together."

"We tried."

"And you fought over the recipe."

"That was years ago."

"Yet Harrison still knew how much it mattered to you."

Beatrice's expression tightened.

Mia placed the old cat toy beside the recipe.

"And this belonged to that business."

Beatrice stared at it.

"You kept that?"

"I didn't know what it was until recently."

Mia's voice softened.

"Now I do."

Beatrice looked away.

Mia could feel the room tightening around her.

Every person was waiting.

Every breath seemed louder.

She turned toward the threatening note.

"And then someone threatened me."

She held up the photograph.

"Someone left a dead rat outside my bakery."

Greg looked uncomfortable.

Julian shook his head.

"That's horrible."

"It was."

Mia looked at Beatrice.

"And then someone brought that same rat and the threatening note into my kitchen."

Beatrice's eyes met hers.

"I already explained that."

"You said you found them."

"Yes."

"Outside my bakery."

"Yes."

"But Sheriff Briggs found you inside my kitchen with them."

Beatrice's lips pressed together.

"I was trying to protect you."

Mia almost laughed.

"By planting a dead rat and a threatening note in my bakery?"

"I wasn't planting anything."

"You were."

Beatrice's voice sharpened.

"You have no proof."

Mia looked at Sheriff Briggs.

Then back at Beatrice.

"Maybe not yet."

A chill passed through the room.

The word mattered.

Yet.

Mia walked slowly around the table.

She looked at Greg.

"You lied."

At Julian.

"You had a motive."

At Chloe.

"You were framed."

Then she looked at Beatrice.

"You had a history."

Beatrice's face remained unreadable.

Mia stopped.

"But those things aren't enough."

She placed both hands on the table.

"The truth is bigger than any one clue."

Sheriff Briggs leaned forward.

"Go on."

Mia took a breath.

"The murder wasn't about the vineyard."

She looked at Julian.

"It wasn't about Greg's job."

She looked at Greg.

"And it wasn't about Chloe."

Finally, she looked at Beatrice.

"It was about a family legacy."

Beatrice's face went pale.

Mia's heart hammered.

She knew.

She could feel it.

This was the moment.

The room was silent.

Gingersnap suddenly jumped down from the counter.

His paws landed softly on the floor.

Mia watched him.

The ginger tabby walked across the bakery.

Past Julian.

Past Greg.

Past Chloe.

He stopped directly in front of Beatrice.

Beatrice looked down.

Gingersnap sat.

He didn't hiss.

He didn't growl.

He didn't move.

He simply stared.

His golden eyes remained fixed on Beatrice.

Unblinking.

Accusing.

Beatrice stared back.

For the first time, her composure cracked.

She looked away.

Mia's heart began pounding even harder.

Gingersnap didn't move.

Sheriff Briggs noticed.

So did everyone else.

The silence became unbearable.

Mia looked at the cat.

Then at Beatrice.

She thought about the first day.

The lavender.

The honey.

The cake.

The scream.

Harrison's body.

The overturned spice jar.

The threatening note.

The stolen evidence.

The hidden recipe.

The nutmeg oil.

The dead rat.

Every clue had brought them here.

Mia slowly straightened.

She looked around the room one final time.

Everyone was waiting.

She took a deep breath.

Then she raised her hand.

And pointed directly at Beatrice.

"You killed Harrison Finch."
