Chapter Seventeen Zenovia

I miss Cassian. He’s only been gone a few hours, but I want him here with me. I had to make him leave since he didn’t want to until Jordan was here. I assured him I’d be safe with the officers outside.

Jordan is always a little late, but never this late.

She probably got sidetracked with some hottie on her way here.

The front door opens, and Evy walks in. I smile as she walks over to me.

She looks cute in her zombie nurse outfit, even if I think the blood is a little over the top.

But if that’s what makes her happy, then I’m happy.

“Hey, aren’t you late?” I ask as I look down at my watch.

She spins around and stares at me with so much hate, it sends a shiver down my spine. “I’m not going. I have to take care of everything on my fucking own.” She throws her hands in the air, and I struggle to sit upright.

“What do you mean?”

She slams her hands on the coffee table as she leans forward.

I’ve never seen this kind of evil in anyone’s eyes.

“You think your relationship is so fucking perfect. Do you know what Mr. Austin does to girls in his little office? Do you know how he promises to be with them, and then throws them away when he’s done with them? You’re nothing but a front, an escape. He doesn’t give a fuck about you.”

She straightens herself, and everything makes sense.

She inserted herself into our lives and made us trust her.

She’s the one behind all the letters and hurting me.

“Did he promise you something?” The best is to keep her talking while I try to get someone’s attention.

I push my hand under the cushion and tap my phone.

I hope to at least get 911 on the line. They can track my call while she rants about whatever she thinks Cassian promised her.

I don’t doubt him for a second. I know he would never get involved with a student, and he would never cheat on me. I trust him with everything in me. She doesn’t see what I see.

She laughs as she paces up and down in front of me.

“He didn’t have to promise me anything. He loves me. He told me he loves me.”

She turns around and stares at me. My eyes follow her hand as she rubs it over her stomach.

“He can’t wait for our family to be complete. Do you know how many times he sneaked into my room when you were asleep? How do you think our little miracle was made.”

Damn, this girl is delusional. I know Cassian never slipped out. I know he was with me all the time.

“But I need to get rid of you. We can’t have you complicate things.”

She moves over to me, and I push my phone deeper under the cushion.

“I will have to find a way to kill you without letting anyone know you were murdered. That cop is already suspicious.”

She taps her palms against her forehead before she pulls a bloody scalpel from her pocket.

“You see, Jordan was being nosy, and she had to die…”

I stop breathing as my heart breaks for my friend.

She killed her. “She found out about me and Cassian… I couldn’t have her warn you, so I had to take care of her and your bakery. She never saw it coming.”

She laughs, and I try to move away from her.

“I’ll leave. You don’t have to kill me.” I see lights coming down the street. I don’t know who it is, but I hope it's someone who’s coming to help me. I would fight back if I wasn’t still dizzy and weak from the poison and blow to the head.

She backhands me so hard, my head turns to the side.

“I’m not stupid. You’ll run to the police. No, you have to die. They all had to die for standing in my way.”

She plays with the scalpel in her hand. My eyes bounce around as I try to find some way out of this.

I don’t want to provoke her in any way. “You’re so gullible. You believed the sad story I told you about my parents and took me in, making it easier for Cassian and me to continue our affair. To make the sweet baby that’s growing inside me.”

She rubs her hand on her stomach, and I take that as my chance to get away.

I kick her in the stomach before I get up and try to make a run for it, but she grabs my hair.

“You sick bitch! You want to kill my baby!”

She pulls me back, and I lose my footing.

“You will not get away with this!” I scratch at her arm trying to loosen her hold on me. She throws me on the floor, making me hit the back of my head. The throbbing pain causes black spots in my eyes.

“You will hurt for what you did.” She grabs my hair once again and pulls me behind her.

She pulls me up the stairs, and I groan as the room spins around me.

“Now, how will I do this?” She stops at the top of the stairs and pulls me up to stand in front of her.

She makes a cut on my arm. “I will take care of Cassian. He won’t even miss you.”

She leans closer to my ear. “I will fuck you out of his system.”

She bites my ear, and I grab a hold of her arm before I lean forward.

“If I go, I’m taking you with me.” I throw myself down the stairs, dragging her with me.

We roll down the stairs like we’re dancing.

I feel every bump, every hit my body takes.

I’m not going to allow Evy to even get close to Cassian.

He deserves to be happy. Even if I die to keep him safe, that is what I will do.

Evy lands at the bottom first with me on top of her. My head spins as I try to take a few deep breaths, but I’m not able to.

This is it.

I’ll never see Cassian again.
