24. Declan #3
Laughter moves through the guests, but her gaze remains on mine. I see the woman she was, the mother she became, and the queen who returned carrying proof strong enough to destroy the empire that condemned her. I would kneel again if the ceremony allowed it.
“I cannot promise goodness.” I hold both her hands.
“You would recognise the lie before I finished speaking. I promise judgment before violence, truth before pride, and choice before possession. I promise to be Cillian’s father in every ordinary hour, not only when danger makes heroism convenient.
I promise you will never again wonder whether I would follow. ”
Her fingers tighten around mine. The judge pronounces us husband and wife, though no law created in daylight could adequately describe what binds us.
I kiss her while Cillian complains that the audience cannot see around my shoulder.
Maeve laughs against my mouth. The sound belongs to today, untouched by the years behind us.
At the reception, Lorenzo formally recognises Maeve before the Crown and the Irish captains.
She stands beside me but does not take her authority from my position.
The declaration names her as my wife, mother of the Irish heir, and director of the independent intelligence division.
It grants her permanent access to Crown verification systems and the power to suspend any execution order pending review.
No future Irish king, including Cillian, may remove that authority without a unanimous Crown vote and independent cause.
Brendan Shaw raises his glass after the declaration. “To Maeve Gallagher O’Rourke, who returned from the dead and immediately began auditing the living.”
Maeve lifts her own glass. “Someone had to examine the expenses.”
Santiago watches Isabella across the table while pretending to listen.
Their hostility has developed enough precision to qualify as courtship, though neither would survive the observation being spoken aloud.
Adrianos and Elena argue quietly over whether one of the wedding accounts connects to an OB6 shell company.
Volkov stands with Evelina near the garden doors, his hand at her back and his attention divided between his wife and every exit.
The larger enemy remains somewhere beyond our reach.
Today, the Crown allows itself to live despite it.
Valeria arrives at Maeve’s side after dinner. She wears silver-grey silk and walks with one hand resting lightly on Lorenzo’s arm. Emotion shines in her eyes as she watches Cillian stand beside me, arguing over chess with Adrianos. The sight appears to touch something deep within her.
She takes Maeve’s hands. “You brought them both home before the past could take them.”
Maeve glances toward Cillian and me. Her expression softens with immediate understanding. She bends and kisses Valeria’s cheek.
“I nearly arrived too late.” Maeve keeps the older woman’s hands in hers. “They made returning unnecessarily difficult.”
“The most precious homes are rarely found without a fight.” Valeria smiles through her emotion. “Guard yours well.”
The words sound like the wisdom of a woman who has survived enough family grief to recognise what was almost lost. Maeve thanks her, and Lorenzo leads Valeria toward a shaded table.
Cillian crosses the garden immediately afterward and demands his mother judge a chess dispute Adrianos refuses to concede.
The moment passes into the noise of celebration.
Maeve finds me alone on the terrace after sunset.
Music drifts through the open doors, and lights glow across the garden where our son has persuaded three Crown kings to participate in a game with rules he appears to be inventing.
Maeve leans against the stone railing beside me. Her wedding ring catches the light.
“You are hiding at your own reception.” She takes my untouched whiskey and sets it aside. “People may think marriage has frightened you.”
“It has.” I place one arm around her waist. “You now possess legal access to my accounts and authority to stop my executions.”
“I possessed both before the wedding.”
“Then I was frightened earlier.”
She turns within my arms. “Regrets?”
“Several.” I touch the silver comb in her hair. “The cake is too small. Santiago remains alive. Cillian has learned card games from Volkov.”
“That last one concerns me.”
“I also regret waiting seven years to see you wearing my ring.”
Sadness moves through her eyes, but it does not own them. The past remains between us without standing in our way. I cannot return the lost years. I can refuse to let them consume the ones ahead.
Maeve rests her palm against my chest. “They brought us here.”
“No.” I cover her hand with mine. “We brought ourselves here despite them.”
Inside, Cillian shouts that Adrianos has violated an invented rule. Niamh calls for someone to prevent the heir from creating international conflict before dessert. Maeve laughs and turns toward the sound. I pull her back long enough to kiss her once beneath the terrace lights.
“No one stole today from us,” I tell her. “This one is ours.”
