8. Zhetrin

ZHETRIN

The thick vellum map of the Undercity unrolls across the war room table, the weighted brass corners snapping down against the ironwood.

Dragging an ink-stained finger across the western trade routes, Eldric taps a series of freshly drawn black crosses marking the borders of our territory. The bronze skin of the Zagfer archivist's face pulls tight with exhaustion.

"The severing is spreading, Lord Zhetrin.

" Eldric's voice rings hollow against the cavernous gloom of the chamber.

"The neutral merchant houses have been turning their fleets away from our ports since the banquet two days ago.

The iron-forges in the south refused our coin this morning.

It is no longer just Lord Kryven burning your wagons.

He lacks the authority to command the neutral lords. "

My focus locks onto the black crosses bleeding into the parchment. The biting scent of burnt copper thickens the air, a manifestation of my rising magic.

"It is the Patriarch." The undeniable truth hardens in my chest. "Varynth is using his sovereign seal to blockade my wealth. He intends to starve my estate until I surrender the human to the executioner’s block."

Tharion emerges from the periphery, the flickering alchemy fire catching the scar on his jaw. The guard captain rests his gauntleted hand upon the pommel of his longblade.

"My scouts report unmarked Khuzuth cloaks moving through the Lowtown ruins." The grim vibration of Tharion's tone bleeds into the room. "They are testing the outer wards. Nameless hounds with expensive steel. They are hunting for a crack in our walls."

I shift my attention to the captain, the silver of my irises catching the flames. "Lock down the iron gates. Double the perimeter watch on the walls. No soul enters or leaves the grounds without my explicit command."

Bowing deeply, Tharion turns on his heel to execute the order.

Enforced silence suffocates the estate. For hours, I walk the grand halls, my boots perfectly muted against the obsidian. As the third watch settles over the stronghold, the atmosphere plummets into a freezing, absolute stillness.

Deep in my chest, a tether snaps.

A taut string breaks under pressure—the magical wards layered across the western residential corridor have been breached.

I move.

The sheer span of my frame allows me to cross the vast distance of the estate with terrifying, liquid speed. Rounding the final archway toward her suite, I unsheathe my longblade. The steel hisses, a sound promising slaughter.

A form detaches itself from the vaulted ceiling just outside Megan’s oak door.

Landing silently in light-absorbing gray leather, the assassin reaches for the iron latch of her room with twin serrated daggers gleaming in his grip.

I obliterate the distance before his fingers graze the metal.

My longblade arcs through the gloom in a singular, devastating sweep. Twisting with unnatural agility, the assassin raises his daggers to block. The impact of Khuzuth steel against steel rings out like a shattered bell, throwing a shower of bright orange sparks over the cold stone.

The force of my blow drives the infiltrator backward, sending his boots skidding across the polished marble. Recovering instantly, he lunges forward with a flurry of rapid, venom-laced strikes aimed at the gaps in my armor.

"The Patriarch demands the surface-filth." The assassin's distorted voice scrapes through the leather mask covering his jaw as he slashes low, aiming for an artery. "Her blood will balance the tally."

Pivoting seamlessly, I let his momentum carry the blade harmlessly past my thigh before bringing the solid iron pommel of my sword down in a crushing strike against his shoulder. Bone splinters. The assassin grunts, his left arm dropping uselessly to his side.

"The Patriarch will choke on his own decrees." The promise vibrates into the freezing air.

Desperate, the assassin throws his weight forward, whipping his remaining dagger in a wild, horizontal arc.

Stepping directly into the strike rather than away from it, I keep my body positioned squarely between the infiltrator and her door.

The serrated edge of his dagger grazes my cheek, biting into the pale skin just below my cheekbone.

A hot ribbon of blood trails down my neck.

I do not flinch. I let my longblade fall to the stone.

My empty hand shoots forward, locking around the assassin’s leather-clad throat. The crushing force of my grip lifts him entirely off his feet. Slamming him backward against the obsidian wall, the brutal impact cracks the stone behind his skull.

His dagger clatters uselessly to the floor. Thrashing and kicking his boots against my shins, he gags for air as my long fingers compress his windpipe.

"Speak the name of the lord who purchased your steel." I ease the pressure just a bit, allowing air to rattle through his ruined throat.

"Kryven." Blood bubbles past the assassin's lips as he chokes on the confession. "Kryven paid the sum... but Varynth gave the blessing. The house is turning against you, Zhetrin."

My gaze bores into his terrified, bulging eyes. The politics of the Undercity are written in blood, and my own bloodline has cast the first stone.

"Then let them stew in their own blood."

Drawing the hunting dagger from my belt in one smooth motion, I drive the steel upward beneath the assassin’s jaw, destroying the brain. He goes completely limp in my grasp. Extracting the blade, I let his lifeless body crumple to the marble floor in a heap of gray leather and expanding gore.

Standing in the dim corridor, my chest rises and falls in slow, measured increments. The metallic stench of fresh blood aggressively cuts through the burnt copper of my magic.

The door behind me clicks, swinging inward to reveal Megan at the threshold. Wearing only a thin linen shift, her honey-blonde curls fall wildly over her shoulders. Her bare toes halt just millimeters from the blood pooling across the floor.

Her amber focus drops to the mutilated corpse, shifts to the hunting dagger dripping from my grip, and finally scales the length of my body. Her gaze catches on the fresh cut bleeding down my cheek.

She does not scream nor cower.

"They breached the walls." Her tone remains incredibly steady, though a faint tremor betrays the tension coursing through her small frame.

"A singular hound." I wipe the blade against the assassin’s cloak before sheathing it. "Kryven and the Patriarch want you dead. Including me since I disobeyed orders. They are desperate."

Stepping back, Megan pulls the door open wider. "Come inside."

The quiet command carries an impossible gravity. A human, inviting a blood-soaked Khuzuth warlord into her sanctuary. Protocol demands I summon Tharion to drag the corpse away and return to the war room to fortify the lower tiers.

Instead, my boots carry me over the threshold.

She shuts the door, throwing the iron bolt into place to seal us within the warm, lavender-scented quiet of her room. The faint glow of a single alchemy lamp resting on the washbasin fights the gloom.

Megan gestures toward the velvet-cushioned chest sitting at the foot of the bed. "Sit down."

I obey. Even seated, my broad shoulders cast a vast silhouette over her fragile, impossibly small frame.

Turning to the washbasin, she pours clean water from a ceramic pitcher—a gentle, entirely foreign sound against the ringing violence still echoing in my skull. She dips a clean linen cloth into the water, wringing the fabric before stepping directly between my spread knees.

The closeness steals the oxygen from the air. She reaches upward, the heat of her small fingers grazing my skin before they actually settle against the sharp angle of my uninjured face to steady my head.

The contact short-circuits my mind. Raised in a sterile, loveless hierarchy, I am a creature of cold calculation.

Physical contact is exclusively a weapon—wielded only to harm, to dominate, or to extract a blood-debt.

No one touches the High Sovereign of House Thosti unless they are holding a blade.

Yet her thumb brushes over my skin, the friction terrifyingly soft.

"You did not dodge." Her intense focus anchors to the shallow wound on my cheek as she presses the damp cloth against the cut.

The sting of the water fails entirely to mask the searing, static heat radiating from her fingertips.

"I heard the clash of steel. You have the reach of a giant. You should not have taken this hit."

"If I shifted my stance to evade the strike," I rasp, the sound rough and barely recognizable as my own, "his blade would have buried itself into your door."

Her hand stalls against my jaw. Lowering the cloth, her amber gaze drops from the cut to collide with my silver irises. The flickering alchemy light catches the profound, unshielded weight of her realization.

"Why are you doing this?" A fierce tremor bleeds into her statement. "Kryven is burning your wealth. Your own Patriarch is blockading your borders. Is one Lowtown stray worth the ruin of your entire estate?"

"No lord of the Undercity dictates my sums." The Khuzuth arrogance slips effortlessly off my tongue. "Not Kryven, and not Varynth. They do not order me."

It is a political truth, but as her gaze remains locked with mine, the magnitude of the lie hiding beneath it fractures my discipline.

The scent of her skin, the impossible warmth radiating from her fragile body, the fearlessness in her posture—it drives a wild, tearing ache straight to the core of my existence. She is a mortal. To my caste, she is nothing more than livestock meant to toil in the dirt.

But as she stands between my knees, defying the entire dark architecture of my world, I do not see a stray.

I see a brilliant, violent mind that I want to map entirely.

I want to unravel the fierce, stubborn compassion that kept her alive in the gutters.

I crave the exact weight of her thoughts.

I need to understand how a fragile human brought the master of a dark elf estate to his knees without ever drawing a weapon.

I am not simply protecting a liability to preserve my pride. The crushing realization shatters centuries of iron discipline in a single, ragged breath.

I am entirely, irrevocably taken by her.
