Chapter 59

NOW

“Didion!”

I hear my sister’s voice traveling through the sheets of rain and whipping wind, but I don’t turn around.

Finally, she reaches me and puts a hand on my shoulder. I let it be there for a moment, and then step away, turning around to see all three of them there.

“What are you doing out here?” Sammie yells over the rain.

I physically cannot find words.

Matt steps forward, squinting, blinking in the tumult. “What’s going on?”

I shake my head. Then, I finally find words.

“I’m still so mad at all of you,” I call out. “More than anything, I’m mad because—because you made me have to be mad at you. I don’t want this! I never wanted this!”

The jumble of words comes out as a result of my jumble of thoughts, my hair plastering to my forehead and shoulders.

Austin calls out, “Hey, Red.”

I breathe hard and lift a hand, then let it fall.

“Are we doing this? Are we gonna have this out? Finally?”

I stare at him for a long moment, and then nod.

Yes. We’re doing this. Finally.
