Chapter 3
CHAPTER THREE
“Hey, what do ya know, Kaya. He knows about us. Maybe now you can keep him as a pet,” Tanja drawled only to frown as she glanced down at his lap. “Although you might want to keep him chained outside until he’s housebroken.”
Kaya ignored her sisters and focused on the large man in front of her. For the past year, he’d somehow managed to hide the fact that he wasn’t human. It pissed her off when she thought about all those times that she’d resigned herself to live without her mate and now...
Now, she wanted answers.
“What are you?” Kaya demanded.
“Besides bored?” Trajan asked as he ran his eyes over her. “What do you think I am?”
“I thought you were human,” she snapped.
“Is that why you were stalking me?” Trajan drawled
“You owe me a hundred bucks! I told you that he knew!” Tanja declared.
“Damn it!”
“What are you?” Kaya demanded again, ignoring the heat creeping up the back of her neck at the reminder that she hadn’t been as discreet as she’d thought.
“Human,” he said with a lazy shrug.
“Bullshit.”
He grinned. “Why do you think I’m lying?” he asked, cocking his head to the side as he studied her.
“Besides the fact that your head was crushed in-”
“Thanks to you,” he interrupted.
“Your heart stopped. Zoey, our healer, touched you and couldn’t identify you. We thought you were dead. Then, a half hour later, when we finally figured out what to do with your body, your heart started beating again.”
“What did you decide to do with my body?” Trajan asked, not really sounding all that concerned, which she found interesting.
She shrugged. “Car accident.”
“How inventive,” Trajan drawled, watching as she took a step closer. “What would you like me to be?” he asked in a voice that was suddenly deeply sensual.
“I don’t know.”
He nodded, accepting that. “Okay, let’s make this easy. What don’t you want me to be?”
She licked her lips nervously. For the first time in a year, she could feel the power and danger rolling off him, making her wonder how she’d missed that before?
“Well?”
“A leech,” she blurted out because that was the one thing that she could never allow herself to want.
“So, you’re really hoping that I’m not a vampire?” Trajan clarified.
“Yes,” Kaya said with a firm nod.
The brunette scoffed. “Can you blame her? Who the hell would want a leech as a mate? Copper breath, body odor, and an aversion to sunlight, and a missing heartbeat? No, thank you.”
“Don’t forget about a horrible fashion sense,” Tanja added with a heartfelt sigh.
“Well, duh. That just went without saying,” Tanja said, nodding in agreement.
“Mate?” Trajan asked, shifting his focus back to her.
She opened her mouth to answer, but Tanja beat her to it. “Yeah, you’re her mate, big deal. Can you two be quiet now so that we can get back to our game?”
Kaya watched as his expression suddenly turned cold. “You think I’m your mate?”
“It’s not like I chose you!” Kaya snapped.
Seriously, she wasn’t that bad.
A lot of men would be happy to have her as a mate. Okay, so that wasn’t true. Most of them, except for Dagon, were afraid of her and she sure as hell wasn’t about to settle for Dagon.
“Well, unchoose me, little girl, because I’m no one’s mate,” Trajan snapped.
“She can’t choose,” Tanja said, sending him a pitying look.
“He’s not very bright,” the brunette said conversationally.
“Clearly not,” Tanja agreed.
While Trajan glared at the small demon that was out of her mind, the Wii twins sipped their beers as they watched them. When neither one of them said anything after a minute, the brunette gestured for them to get on with it.
“You may continue,” Tanja said, gesturing with her beer for them to continue.
Trajan ignored them for the moment and focused on Kaya. “Why do you think I’m your mate?”
“Another stupid question,” Tanja said on a heavy sigh.
“Really, would it kill him to get to the good stuff?”
“It really wouldn’t,” Tanja agreed.
When Kaya didn’t answer, the twins decided that they would get the ball rolling. “Demons feel overpowering attraction for their mates-” the brunette began only to have Tanja interrupt.
“Well, then, he might be my mate as well, because grrrrrr,” she said, shooting him an over-the-top wink that had him sighing.
“I’m going to need you to stay focused, Tanja,” the brunette said. “Anyway, demons become obsessed with their mates.”
“Hence the stalking.”
“It’s a pull they can’t deny. It’s really not her fault. I mean, you should be flattered considering…” Tanja said, allowing her words to trail off with a pointed look at the sheet.
Both Trajan and Kaya looked at the Wii twins. “Considering what?” he demanded.
They both shrugged. “Well, you can’t seem to control your bladder, you lie, and we were pretty sure you were gay for a minute there.”
“You thought I was gay?” he demanded, unable to help but frown in confusion.
“Well,” the brunette said, looking thoughtful, not a good sign for him, “You were ogling our Playgirl magazines like they were your new best friends and let’s not forget the look of longing you gave ‘The Monster’.”
He couldn’t stop himself from asking, “The Monster?”
They both jerked their thumbs in the direction of the huge vibrator on the floor. He shook his head in disbelief. “Of course, you named it The Monster.” God, he needed blood. “And now?”
“Now what?” Tanja asked, frowning in confusion.
“You said that you thought I was gay, meaning that you no longer do. What changed in the past ten minutes?”
They wiggled their eyebrows suggestively. “You’ve been creating quite the tent since Kaya came into the room,” Tanja said as she growled playfully towards his crotch.
His eyes dropped to his lap.
Ah, hell. At least he knew the damn thing still worked. A minute ago, he hadn’t noticed that his cock was hard. Now, he was painfully aroused and the two women sitting next to him had nothing to do with it.
