34. Connor
CONNOR
Five Months Later
I pause in the hallway and listen.
It’s quiet. That’s strange. I’m still not used to it. Ever since Dad, Danielle, and Rowan moved into their own place down the block, I keep catching myself wondering where they are.
Not like it’s far. I could be in their kitchen in two minutes tops if that’s what I wanted.
There’s a thump and a curse from around the corner and I smile to myself.
Hell, I got enough problems here.
“What are you doing, crazy woman?” I step into the doorway of the nursery to find my visibly pregnant wife in a tank top and sweats standing on a stool with a hammer and nails, bashing away like she’s trying to tear down the drywall. “Angelina! You stop that right now!”
“Hold on, almost… almost got it…” She hits her thumb and curses. The stool wobbles wildly and I rush forward, grabbing her by the hips and lifting her like she’s nothing, placing her down at my side.
“Let me see that.” I check her thumb and it’s only a shade red. “What the hell were you thinking, Angie?”
“I’m trying to hang the pictures for the baby.”
“I told you, I’m doing it.”
“But it’s not done, and the baby’s coming soon?—“
I take her thumb and stick it in my mouth. I suck it, reach out, and cup her face with my hand. I pull it out and hold her eyes.
“You are the most infuriating, beautiful, perfect specimen I’ve ever seen.”
“Thank you?” She blinks rapidly. “God, being pregnant is making me so horny. What the hell’s with that?”
“Hormones.” I tug her closer, hand moving around into her hair. She lets out a sigh, a happy smile on her face. “If I see you on a stool, chair, ladder, or anything else again, I swear I’ll chain you to the bed.”
Her eyelids flutter. “Promise?”
“Not a game, angel.”
“Alright, alright, I won’t do it again.” She groans when I pull her hair. “I mean it!”
“Promise now.”
“I promise. Asshole.” That smile again, laced with need. “Pull harder?”
I do as instructed, tugging until she’s groaning and wriggling her hips, and I get down on my knees and get her off for the third time today, using my mouth and my fingers this time, until she’s screaming on my lips.
Nothing better than taking care of my angel.
Even if she’s more like a devil right now.
Once satisfied, I make her sit in the rocker while I finish hanging the picture. She’s smiling and I wonder how long that’ll last before I’m fucking her again. I give it an hour. I swear, my dick’s going to be black and blue before this baby comes, and I’m not complaining one tiny bit.
“Mom called earlier,” she says casually as I adjust the frame to make sure it’s straight.
“Yeah? Really?”
“Hadn’t heard from her since we kicked her out a few months back.”
“I’m shocked she took this long to call, honestly.”
“Me too. It wasn’t easy, not checking on her.”
“I’m proud of you though. You did the right thing.”
“Maybe.” She tucks her legs under her and watches me carefully. “She said something odd. She asked when the next delivery was coming.”
“Delivery? Huh?” I keep my back turned on my wife so she can’t see my face.
“Yeah, and when I pressed her on it, she got all flaky and hung up.”
“Strange. She’s probably high.”
“Definitely, but not so bad that she couldn’t pick up when I called back.”
I scrub a hand over my face. Fucking Dawn. “What’d she tell you?”
“Everything. Honestly, Connor. I thought we agreed.”
I turn slowly, arms crossed over my chest. “We did agree. We talked about it. I convinced you to cut her off, and it was the right call, wasn’t it?”
“Yes! But you took over!”
I stride to my wife and kneel beside her. “Listen to me, love. Your mom’s a fucking mess. She can’t survive on her own. And I knew that you’d never forgive yourself if something bad happened to her, so I picked up where you left off.”
“We’re enabling her, Connor!”
“Yes, but it was less about that, and more about forcing you to prioritize yourself for a change.” I lean in and kiss the corner of her mouth. “Wait a second. You knew about this already, but you let me go down on you.”
Her cheeks turn pink. “You’re an asshole, but you’re still really good at making me come.”
“You dirty girl. I feel used.”
“Good. You were.”
“How dare you.” I kiss her again. “Would you feel better if I apologized?”
“No, because I know you wouldn’t mean it. Were you ever going to tell me?”
“Eventually. But not until after the baby. I don’t want you thinking about your mother at all.
I want you focused on here and now.” I lean down and press my ear to her belly.
I hear her heart beating, and I swear, I can hear the baby’s too.
There’s a dull, gentle thud as my child kicks.
I smile and, god, it’s the greatest thing I’ve ever felt.
We stay like that a while. The changing table’s in flat packs. The crib’s half together. Only a few of the pictures are on the walls.
But we have time. Not a lot, but it feels like forever, kneeling here with my wife.
“I’m going to admit something and I don’t want you to use it against me,” Angie says, fingers stroking through my hair.
“I would never.”
“Good.” She pulls. “You’re a decent man, Connor. I’m glad you’ve been looking after my mom.”
I turn to kiss her belly. “I knew you would be.”
“I want you to tell me this stuff though.”
“I’m sure you do.”
She tugs harder and I grunt, tilting my chin up and smirk at her. “Trying to turn me on again?”
“No, thanks.”
The bell downstairs rings. I kiss Angie one last time before heading down to answer it. Marcus comes inside and helps my limping father along with him. “Cavalry is here,” Dad says, lugging an old tool box. His bum leg drags as he walks. “Where’s that damn crib?”
“I tried to stop him,” Marcus says, shaking my hand. “He wouldn’t listen.”
“Dad, you’re still not back to normal. I can handle this?—“
But my old man waves me off. “I bet that wife of yours is already getting down to work. You lousy bastard.”
“Dad, I run a massive crime family, a huge towing and salvage company, and I’m still dealing with the fallout from the Gallagher fight.”
“Which is why I’m here.” Dad heads up the steps. “Idiot boy.”
“Speaking of idiots, Lorcan’s been causing trouble again.” Marcus pats my back. “But Sinead put him in his place last night. That’s one hell of a woman.”
“Wish you’re the one who gets to marry her?”
“Not in the fucking slightest.” Marcus helps my father into the nursery. I extricate Angie before she gets stuck listening to them bicker over which ratchet wrench to use.
“I think I’ll go to the other house and see what Dani and Rowie are up to.” Angie slips on shoes and grabs her keys. “You boys will be okay?”
“I will be, but—“ There’s a loud bang from upstairs and Dad’s cursing echoes through the halls. “Doubt he will be.”
Angie touches my cheek, smiles at me fondly, and kisses my chin. “Love you.”
“Yeah, love you, too.”
She leaves me in the hall.
I listen to the sounds of my dad and my best friend working on my future child’s furniture.
I close my eyes and think about all the troubles I have, all the stress and the pain, the sanctions from the war still hanging like a sword over my head.
I’m good with Declan now, but we’ll never be back to where we were before. He’ll never trust me like he once did.
Which has to be fine. I’ll rebuild, as always.
Maybe not the same, but better.
With this new family.
