Chapter 4

. . .

Mia

I lose count of the days. They blur together in a haze of Elias’s sheets, Elias’s mouth, Elias’s cock stretching me open every night until I’m sore and satisfied and falling asleep with my face pressed into his chest. His penthouse becomes my home with terrifying speed.

I have a drawer. A toothbrush. A favorite mug in his kitchen cabinet.

Domestic details that should feel mundane but instead feel like claiming—each one another thread tying me to him.

He cooks for me. Actual meals, not hospital cafeteria mystery meat or the protein bars I used to live on.

Salmon with crispy skin. Pasta with sauce he makes from scratch.

He sets a plate in front of me and watches me eat with that intense, focused stare, and when I moan around a bite he gets that look—the one that says he’s three seconds from carrying me to the bedroom.

He tends to me after sex with the same careful precision he brings to surgery.

Warm washcloths. Gentle fingers checking for tenderness.

“Sore?” he’ll ask, his hand cupping between my thighs, and when I nod he’ll murmur, “Good girl,” and the praise will coil through me like liquor, warm and dizzying.

It’s the middle of the night when the fear finds me.

I lie awake staring at the ceiling, Elias asleep beside me, one heavy arm thrown across my waist, and I think about my career.

The six years of nursing school. The loans stacked like playing cards.

The late nights studying, the clinical rotations where I cried in bathroom stalls from exhaustion, the résumé I’ve built line by careful line.

All of it balanced on the edge of a secret.

At the hospital, we are careful. Ish.

He still expects excellence. Still corrects my technique with that stern, commanding voice that used to make me blush and now makes my nipples hard beneath my scrub top.

“Mia, that blood pressure cuff is too loose. Adjust it.” Or, sharper: “You’re rushing the med check. Slow down. Accuracy over speed.”

But now there’s a hand on the back of my neck when he says it.

A possessive grip, fingers curled into the hair at my nape, holding me still while his mouth is close enough to my ear that I can feel his breath.

“You’re mine,” he’ll whisper, and then he’ll step back and continue rounds as if nothing happened, while I stand there with my clipboard shaking and my panties soaked.

The supply closets are the worst. Or the best. Depending on how you define worst.

He corners me in one on a Tuesday afternoon, pushes me against the shelves of gauze and bandage rolls, and kisses me until my knees buckle. His hand finds its way under my scrub top, cupping my breast, thumb circling my nipple through the thin fabric of my bra.

“Been thinking about these all morning,” he growls against my mouth. “Thinking about wrapping my lips around this pretty nipple and sucking until you come in my hand right here in this closet.”

“Elias,” I gasp, because we are ten feet from the nurses’ station and anyone could walk in, and the risk should terrify me but instead it’s making me grind against his thigh like a cat in heat. “Someone will?—”

“Let them.” He pinches my nipple, hard enough to make me cry out, then muffles the sound with his mouth. “Let the whole fucking hospital hear what you sound like when I touch you. Then they’ll know exactly who you belong to.”

He doesn’t let me come. He pulls back, adjusts himself in his scrubs with a wince, and smooths my hair with hands that are somehow both gentle and proprietary. “Back to work, little one. I expect those post-op vitals on my desk in twenty minutes.”

And I go. Because that’s the thing about Elias Thorne—he is still, fundamentally, my attending.

The man who holds my career in his hands as literally as he holds my body at night.

The power imbalance hasn’t gone away. It’s just gotten more complicated, wrapped in desire and possession until I can’t tell where the professional ends and the personal begins.

The fear crystallizes on a Thursday, three weeks into this arrangement.

I’m assisting in a procedure—not his, another surgeon’s—and I make a mistake.

Small. Easily corrected. But the surgeon snaps at me, and for a split second I see my future flash before my eyes: one misstep, one rumor, one person who catches the way Dr. Thorne looks at me, and everything I’ve worked for goes up in smoke.

That night, I try to put distance between us.

At the penthouse, I keep to my side of the sofa. I answer his questions in monosyllables. When his hand finds my thigh, I shift away. Not dramatically. Just enough that his fingers curl into empty air.

He notices. Of course he notices. Elias Thorne notices everything about me—the way I take my coffee, the cadence of my breathing when I’m asleep, the millimeter of space I’ve just put between us on a leather couch.

“You’re pulling away.” Not a question. A diagnosis, delivered in that cool, clinical tone that means he’s already running differentials in his head.

“I’m being professional,” I say, and it sounds weak even to me.

He laughs. A short, humorless sound. “We are well past professional, Mia.”

“I know that.” I set my wine glass down too hard.

“That’s the problem. We’re past professional and we’re still at the hospital every day, and I have loans, Elias.

I have a career. I have everything to lose if someone finds out the most respected surgeon in the building is fucking his nursing student in supply closets and calling her his good girl. ”

The words hang between us. Ugly. True.

He’s quiet for a long moment. Then he stands, crosses to where I’m sitting, and pulls me to my feet with one hand on my wrist. Not rough. Firm. Decisive.

“Come here.”

He sits on the sofa and tugs me across his lap in one smooth motion. My scrub pants and panties are around my ankles before I can process what’s happening, and then his hand is on my bare ass—warm, broad, possessive—and he’s delivering the first sharp smack.

The sting blooms. Hot. Immediate. I gasp, my hips jerking, and his hand comes down again.

And again. Not hard enough to hurt, not really, but hard enough that each impact sends a jolt of heat straight to my clit.

My body responds on instinct, growing wetter with each slap, my hips pushing back into his hand like I’m begging for more.

“Such a tight little ass,” he murmurs, and his free hand strokes the curve of my hip, soothing and stimulating at once. “Taking my hand so well. My good girl. My perfect little one.”

The praise liquefies me. I’m dripping, actual slick coating my inner thighs, my pussy throbbing with each smack of his palm. He spanks me until my ass is warm and pink and my breathing is ragged, until I’m grinding shamelessly against his thigh, desperate for friction.

Then he stops. Shifts me off his lap. And drops to his knees on the penthouse floor.

His mouth finds me without preamble. One broad stroke of his tongue through my soaked folds, and I cry out, my hands flying to his silver-streaked hair.

He eats me like a man possessed—sucking my clit, driving his tongue inside me, groaning against me like he’s the one being pleasured.

His beard scrapes my inner thighs, rough and perfect, and I come with a shout that bounces off the floor-to-ceiling windows, my thighs clamping around his head, my hips bucking against his mouth.

He doesn’t stop. Works me through it, gentler now, his tongue circling lazily while I tremble and whimper above him. Then he lifts his head, his mouth glistening with my come, and looks up at me with eyes gone dark with hunger.

“The real claiming,” he says, his voice wrecked, “has only just begun.”

He stands, lifts me into his arms, and carries me to the bedroom. I should be thinking about my career. About loans and rumors and the precarious house of cards we’re building.

Instead, all I can think is: mine. His. Ours.

And for tonight, at least, that feels like enough.
