Chapter 8
Then I turned and walked away.
MuJinci stood frozen. ChenYi patted her shoulder. “MuJinci, you still have me…”
She didn’t respond, just stared at my retreating back.
After cutting MuJinci off completely, I sold the marital home, changed my number, blocked her everywhere, and bought a new place on the east side.
I’d never felt more at peace.
Friends heard about the divorce and dragged me out to a bar.
I stumbled home drunk in the early hours.
An unknown number called three times in a row.
When it rang again, I answered.
“SuYueming, you’re getting way too bold—actually blocking me?!”
“Why is it you again?”
I loosened my tie and hung up.
After a cold shower to sober up, the phone rang once more.
I picked up without looking. “MuJinci, are you done?”
“SuYueming, it’s me.”
ChenYi’s voice.
I rubbed my temple. “What?”
“Um… MuJinci’s mom asked you to come over for dinner tomorrow. She called you earlier, you hung up, and now she’s mad and doesn’t want to talk to you, so she told me to pass the message.”
She still hadn’t told her mom we were divorced?
“MuJinci and I are done. No need for dinner. Put her on—I would tell her myself.”
“Okay…”
ChenYi passed the phone. “MuJinci, SuYueming wants to talk to you…”
“What’s there to talk about? He thinks a phone apology fixes everything? I’m not answering!”
Her proud voice carried through.
“MuJinci?”
Silence.
She hadn’t hung up.
I continued. “Just making it clear—we’re over. Stop harassing me. It’s bothering me. If you keep it up, I didn't hesitate to call the police.”
I paused, then added, “Being your husband was exhausting. I’m done. Let’s part on decent terms.”
“SuYueming! What do you mean you’re drawing a line? Who do you think you are? You’re getting cocky now, talking to me like this? Worry about how you’ll kneel and beg me for a remarriage later!”
The call cut off.
I poured a glass of water to ease the hangover.
The night passed just like that.
For the entire next month, I didn’t contact MuJinci.
She couldn’t reach me even if she wanted to.
Until one day, after a class reunion, she blocked my path outside.
“You blocked me, moved, cut off all contact—SuYueming, what exactly do you want?” Her eyes were tired. “If you’ve had your tantrum, come home. I didn't even make you apologize anymore.”
Won’t make me apologize.
I almost laughed.
“MuJinci, you really think too highly of yourself.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” She raised her hand instinctively.
I caught her wrist and pushed it away. “You stick like glue I can’t peel off, and now you want to hit me? MuJinci, what the hell are you?”
“What did you just say?! I’m your wife!”
“Ex-wife.”
