Chapter 16

Scarlet sat down at her aunt’s old desk in the back, looking over the information she’d put together and the phone number she’d found online. There was only one thing left to do: make the call.

She didn’t let herself think too much about it. She dialed the number on her sticky note.

It rang twice before a woman answered. “Hello?”

“Hello, is this Clara?”

“Yes. Who’s this?”

“I’m calling on behalf of someone else. I was wondering if you knew anyone by the name of Elena Giovanni.”

“Can’t say I do.”

“You were adopted, right?”

“Yes. How do you know that?”

“I have some notes here. Anyway, I was wondering if you ever remembered living on the coast.”

The phone fell silent for several moments.

“Clara?”

A breath rasped over the phone. “Yes. I was very young. It’s only a faint image or two.”

“I’ve got a request for you. There isn’t a lot of time. But I think I know your mother.”
