33. Theon
THEON
The sublevel keeps its own time.
The lights do not change. The air scrubbers do not tire. Morning arrives only when the communications panel announces the oh-eight-hundred threat review and Darius sends breakfast down through the dumbwaiter.
The first review brings worse news. One of Korte’s Chicago teams passed within eighteen miles of the building during the night, and Marcus has tied four Korte-linked units to supply traffic staging through Billings.
They appear to be supporting the Montana property rather than joining the search here, but the distinction is not comforting.
Nikolai gives Isla the current assessment and the same options as before. She can remain on the secure level or transfer to the secondary safe house. She can also leave protection entirely, although no one recommends it.
She tests the release, watches the blast door open and chooses another day underground.
At nine fifteen, she sits cross-legged on the narrow bed with her laptop balanced on her knees, glaring at freight manifests as if hostility might force them to confess.
“Four teams staging through Billings,” she says. “Medical gases, network hardware, steel, personnel. Korte is building something in Montana.”
“Fortifying something,” I correct. “We still don’t know whether she’s building it for us.”
“I don’t like any version of it.”
Neither do I.
She scrubs both hands over her face. Her hair has gone from a ponytail to a braid to loose around her shoulders since we came below. The shadows beneath her eyes have deepened by degrees.
“I hate this,” she says.
“The room?”
“The waiting. I can handle the room as long as the door keeps opening. I can’t handle having nowhere to put all of this.” She taps two fingers against her temple. “My body thinks we’re trapped. My brain knows we’re safer here. Neither one will shut up.”
I take the laptop only after she lets go of it.
“Your Montana model has been submitted. Marcus has the live files. Dominic won’t become easier to find because you stare harder.”
“You have a proposed alternative.”
“Several.”
I pull the duffel from beneath the bed and set it where she can see it.
Her gaze settles on the burgundy rope coiled inside.
“You brought a curriculum into protective shelter.”
“I brought options. Nothing happens until we discuss them, and agreeing now does not commit you later.” I sit beside her.
“Rope and a blindfold today, if you want them. Edging. Tomorrow, perhaps anal play. Another day, the remote vibrator for a longer scene. We decide before each one. You can cancel any of it without giving me a reason.”
Her pulse changes beneath the skin of her throat. I know the tell from months of watching her, but I wait for her mouth.
“And the fourth day?” she asks.
“We find the limit, if you’re still interested. We do not cross it.”
She studies me, then closes her laptop herself and sets it on the floor.
“I’m interested.”
The rope is soft-laid cotton, burgundy because black would look too much like equipment from Site Nine.
Soft does not mean harmless. Rope can tighten, compress a nerve or abrade skin if the person holding it becomes careless. I show Isla the safety shears and place them beside my knee before I touch her wrists.
“Same colors,” I say. “Same two taps if you can’t speak. I check before the third edge. Nothing new gets added once you’re too far under to consider it.”
“Green, yellow, red. Two taps means stop.”
“And your hands?”
“No numbness, tingling or cold. If any of that changes, I tell you.”
“Good girl.”
She inhales sharply.
I bind her wrists together in front of her with a simple two-column tie, leaving room beneath every wrap. She flexes her fingers while I check warmth, color and sensation. Only then do I attach the tie to the bed frame with a release I can open in one pull.
The restraint is real. So is the way out.
“Color?”
“Green, Daddy.”
I blindfold her.
The change in her is immediate. Her breath slows as the room disappears. The muscles in her shoulders remain loose.
“Tell me what you feel.”
“Rope. Mattress. Your hand on my left thigh.” A pause. “You’re watching me too closely.”
“That is not a sensation.”
“It is when you do it.”
I drag my fingertips up the inside of her leg and stop before reaching the place already wet for me.
“Still inclined to argue?”
“Always.”
I bite her hip. Not gently enough to be mistaken for affection, not hard enough to break skin. Her laugh snaps into a gasp.
The vibrator begins against her inner thigh on its lowest setting. She tries to move toward it.
“Stay.”
Her hips settle. “Cruel.”
“Not yet.”
I make her wait before I place it against her clit. The vibration is little more than a hum, but deprivation turns small sensations sharp. Her thighs tense. The flush begins high on her chest and spreads toward her throat.
When her breathing loses its rhythm, I take the vibrator away.
“That’s one,” I say.
“I know how to count.”
“You may know less by the time I finish.”
The second edge leaves her pulling against the rope and swearing at me. I check her fingers again, press my thumb into her palm and feel her close her hand around it.
Before the third, I stop.
“Look at me.”
She turns toward my voice beneath the blindfold.
“Do you want another denial, or do you want to come?”
Her answer takes several breaths. “Another.”
“Color?”
“Green.”
I give her the third. Then the fourth, checking every time rather than treating one yes as permission for the rest. On the fifth approach, I keep the vibrator against her and tell her she can come.
She breaks around the permission. Her wrists pull once against the rope, hard, and her cry strikes the concrete walls before returning to us.
I release the bed tie, then her wrists. No numbness. No pressure marks beyond a temporary blush. I remove the blindfold and let her eyes find me before I pull her against my chest.
“Report,” I say.
“Alive. Furious. Extremely satisfied.” Her voice is wrecked. “You sound pleased with yourself.”
“I am capable of accurate self-assessment.”
“That’s a yes, then.”
The second morning begins with another threat review. The Chicago teams are still searching, and the safe-house route has attracted surveillance two blocks from a vehicle exchange. Isla opens the blast door before she gives Nikolai her answer.
She chooses the secure level for another day.
That afternoon, she opens the door again before we begin.
The system accepts her palm. The locks withdraw. Nikolai’s panel offers an escort, and she declines it.
She leaves the blast door open while I lay a towel across the bed and set out lubricant, gloves and the smallest of the body-safe silicone plugs I ordered months ago and never assumed we would use.
It has a broad flared base. There is no numbing agent, no compound of my own invention, nothing that could silence a warning her body needs us to hear.
After thirty seconds, she closes the door herself.
“Still want this?” I ask.
“Tell me exactly what you want to do.”
“Touch first. One finger if you ask for it. The smallest plug only if you still want more. No penile penetration today. No target we have to reach at all.”
“And if it hurts?”
“We stop. Pressure and unfamiliar fullness may be expected. Sharpness, burning or numbness are not.”
“You really did research.”
“You sound surprised.”
“I’m deciding whether to be flattered or concerned about your search history.”
“Be still and decide.”
She smiles as she lies down.
I take my time. Longer than she expects, perhaps longer than she wants, but I will not turn her impatience into injury. I keep one hand on her hip and make her tell me what changes. When she asks for my finger, I give it to her. When her body tenses, I stop moving until it loosens around me.
“Strange,” she says. “Not bad.”
“Color?”
“Green. More.”
I warm the smallest plug in my palm, coat it with lubricant and ease it in by increments. Her gasp is sharp enough that I stop.
“Pressure,” she says before I can ask. “Just pressure. Keep going.”
“Ask properly.”
Her eyes flash. “Please keep going, Daddy.”
I do.
Once the base rests safely against her, I give her time to adjust. She tests the fullness with a cautious shift of her hips. The uncertainty on her face becomes surprise, then hunger.
“Touch me,” she says.
I lower my mouth to her clit.
The orgasm catches her quickly. She clenches around the plug and cries out, one hand closing in my hair while I hold her hip still through the aftershocks.
When her body has softened again, I remove it slowly, clean her, and check for pain or blood. There is neither.
She lies with one arm over her eyes, smiling.
“Excellent data,” she says. “Publication recommended.”
“Peer review will be limited.”
“Coward.”
On the third morning, Dominic reports that he identified one of Korte’s Chicago vehicles and lost it beneath an overpass before he could see who was inside. Isla listens to the rest of the review, tests the release and chooses to stay.
For the longer denial scene that afternoon, she schedules a two-hour break and tells Marcus she will be unavailable except for an emergency.
Her work is not mine to dismiss because I want her attention. If I want two hours of her time, I ask for them.
She chooses the remote vibrator and slips it into place herself.
I control it from across the room while she makes tea, paces the annex and beats me twice at cards.
Low vibration becomes stillness without warning.
Stillness becomes eleven seconds at an intensity that makes her grip the table and glare at me.
“You counted,” she says.
“Of course.”
“I hate you.”
“No, you don’t.”
I prove it by raising the setting again.
By the end of the first hour, she has stopped pretending the game matters. She kneels between my legs, flushed and furious, and asks permission to come.
I make her ask twice.
Then I grant it.
The release tears a sob from her. I am beside her before the second follows, the remote abandoned, the vibrator off.
“Isla. Look at me.”
Her wet eyes focus on mine.
“Good tears,” she says, then laughs at herself. “Overwhelming. Not wrong.”
“Do you want space or contact?”
“You. Close.”
I hold her until her breathing settles. Water first. Food after. The emergency channel remains silent throughout.
On the fourth morning, the assessment remains ugly and inconclusive. No team has the building’s address. None has left Chicago. Supply traffic continues through Billings toward the Montana site, but no approach there has been authorized.
Isla opens the blast door. She stands in the vestibule long enough to make the choice real, then comes back inside.
The limit arrives in the final session that evening.
We have discussed the larger plug twice. Isla asks for it the second time. I prepare her slowly and stop at the first resistance, but when I begin again, her shoulders lock beneath my hand.
“Yellow.”
Everything in me goes still.
The plug is only partly inside her. I do not pull it free without asking; sudden movement is still movement.
“Hold or remove?”
“Remove. Slowly.”
I do exactly that. Then I set it beyond reach, strip off the glove and gather her against me.
“No more anal play today,” I say.
She grips my hand hard. “I felt trapped for a second. Not by you. My body just—went somewhere else.”
“Site Nine?”
She nods against my chest. “There was no yellow there. Only compliance or consequence.”
I wrap the blanket around her.
“There is yellow here. There is red. There is a door you can open and a man who stops when you tell him.”
“You didn’t hesitate.”
“I never will.”
“I know that here.” She touches two fingers to her temple. Then she presses her palm to the center of her chest. “This needed proof.”
I do not tell her the moment healed anything. Bodies do not surrender old lessons because a new one was taught once.
We stay on the bed until she tells me she is green again. The scene remains over.
Later, she studies the fading bite at her hip in the small mirror.
“I like this one,” she says.
“It will be gone in a few days.”
“Then you can replace it when I ask.”
“A demanding arrangement.”
“You’ll endure.”
The priority channel sounds at 0341.
Both of us are awake before the second chime.
Nikolai’s message fills the panel.
AUTHENTICATED C-11 BURST FROM EZRA. CONTACT CONFIRMED: V. MARCHANT. GAMMA ACTIVE. ORIGIN NARROWED TO NORTHERN INDIANA. NO SIGNAL AFTER TRANSMISSION. DOMINIC AND RECOVERY CELL REROUTING.
I read it twice.
“Authenticated?” Isla asks.
“One-time key assigned to Ezra. It could have been sent under duress, but it wasn’t fabricated from nothing.”
She sits up, dragging the sheet around herself. “Gamma active means Marchant knows he’s there.”
“Or Ezra believes she does.”
The distinction is small and vicious.
Another line appears.
NO DIRECT APPROACH UNTIL DOMINIC CONFIRMS THE SITE.
At least Nikolai has not mistaken contact for rescue.
Isla takes my hand. “He found her.”
“He confirmed her identity. We don’t know whether he found her or she allowed herself to be found.”
“Dominic is moving.”
“Yes.”
“Ezra survived Site Nine. He survived getting out.”
“Survival and intact are different outcomes.”
The words hurt her. I see it, but I will not give her a comforting lie while Marchant has Ezra within reach.
She shifts closer until our shoulders touch.
“Then we wait for facts,” she says.
Upstairs, Marcus is tracing the burst and Dominic is rerouting east toward Indiana. Montana remains a fortified question hundreds of miles away, dangerous but separate.
Down here, the blast door is still closed. Isla can open it whenever she chooses.
At 0342, she chooses to stay beside me and wait for Ezra’s next message.
