Epilogue

Three years later

Rowan

“Milo?” Rowan called as he stepped into their apartment, already craving Milo’s scent and those long, lanky arms wrapped around him.

He’d been away for a day and a half at a convention about dragon hoards and different display options, and it had felt like an eternity. Three days was the most they could manage apart, but they opted to keep it shorter each time. Purely because they wanted to. And they could.

“In here!” Milo called from their bedroom. Rowan dropped his briefcase and his jacket right in front of the door, toeing off his shoes and beelining for the bedroom.

The promise of soft skin, silver hair, and those addictive lips on his made him move at the speed of lightning.

He knew his eyes were already flashing red, the scales already shining through his skin. He was changing because his mate was within reach, and even if he could have, he wouldn’t have stopped himself.

He hoped he never stopped reacting to Milo like that. Primal and all-consuming.

He expected a lot of things when he walked into their bedroom.

Milo naked.

Milo already playing with himself.

Milo jumping him the moment he appeared.

What he absolutely didn’t expect was Milo standing in the middle of the room with a gigantic papier-maché tree propped next to him and a small chain wrapped around his waist, securing him to the wobbly, crafted tree.

“What in the…”

“HAPPY MATEVERSARY!!” Milo cheered when he saw him, face splitting into a smile that threatened to go all the way around his head if it weren’t for his ears.

“Happy what?” Rowan asked.

“It’s the day we realized we were mates!” he explained. “Three years ago today.”

“Ooooh!” Rowan suddenly felt like crap. “I’m really sorry, I forgot.”

“Yeah, no.” Milo shook his head. “I did too. Ray called and mentioned it the same day you left. And I was like, OMG, I need to do something, so ta-dah!”

The jazz hands really added to the imagery.

“So you chained yourself to a fake tree?” Rowan asked.

“Yeah. I tried getting Ruben to recreate the whole symphony thing, blah blah, but he told me there was no way he could get it done in a day and a half.”

Rowan frowned. “Is that what he said?”

Milo shook his head. “He told me I was a fucking moron and hung up. I’m not seeing the positive influence Ray has had on him that everyone is talking about, TBF. He’s a dick.”

“Agreed,” Rowan said. “Where did you even get that?”

“What, the tree? Shelly and a new lady at the senior center helped me make it. She used to be a teacher and knows all sorts of crafts. She’s the best.”

Rowan smiled. “Hoard addition?”

Milo bit his lip. His bleeding heart latched on to the grief of others, determined to make it disappear. “Nobody has come to visit her since June.”

“I’ll arrange a room,” he said simply.

Milo beamed. “Best mate ever!”

“Only mate!” Rowan corrected, walking toward him and cupping his cheek. “Nobody else. Ever.”

“Ever.” Milo shook his head. “Just you. Forever.”

“Good,” Rowan said.

“Now fuck me before I go extinct!”

“There’s something seriously wrong with you.”
