Chapter Thirteen

Wednesday evening is finally here. But it’s not as I hoped for. I had to cancel with Sam, even though I hated to. The girls have gone out to eat with Judy and to shop. I couldn’t say no. She pushed for them to stay overnight again, but I stood my ground.

The house is empty, a big, lonely space.

I lean back on the couch, comforted by a glass of Woodford Reserve.

Alabama Shakes play in the background as I sip my drink in the lonesome moment.

I haven’t heard from Steven, and he missed work today.

He’s swept up in his own romantic adventure.

I’m beginning to think this is more serious than he lets on.

He hasn’t been around much and that’s not like him.

I can’t stop worrying about Maisie being with Judy.

Bill wasn’t anything like his mom. I have witnessed firsthand the way she would give in to Bill when he put her in her place.

I remember when Annie started dating him.

He was such a bright light in her life, treating her like a queen from day one.

Before he asked her to marry him, he talked to me.

He was very considerate of my feelings. He knew that we were all each other had.

He told me that he would always love the bond we shared.

He stood by his word and was the best thing for Annie.

She loved him so much. They had a relationship that I envied.

I was so happy for Annie. She deserved that for all that she sacrificed for me and how good a human she was.

And on top of everything, Bill was so kind and loving to me.

I throw my head back on the couch, letting the memories move through my mind. Only when a ding from my phone sounds do I rejoin the present.

Are you busy? Sam asks.

I snap a picture of me with a whiskey glass in my hand and the comment Reminiscing with an old friend.

Ha! Her response is immediate. Got room for another friend?

I sit up a little straighter, feeling revived. Absolutely! You and Olivia can drop over anytime. Sure, I’m fishing to see if she meant a party of two or three.

My phone beeps again. Just me, if that’s okay. Olivia is with my mom.

I throw back the small amount of whiskey left. Come on over! I rush to the bathroom to check my hair. I’m wearing faded jeans, no socks, and a blue T-shirt. I can pull this look off. I rustle my hair to give it some life and apply some blush to my cheeks.

The doorbell rings. That was fast. I look at my reflection one last time before turning with all the confidence I can muster. I’m ready for this. I need it.

“Hi,” Sam says as I open the door. Her smile is impeccable. “I’m so glad you invited me over.” She sticks out her tongue, and my stomach flips.

“Well…” I open the door wide enough for her to enter. “I do have a soft spot for those in need.”

Sam laughs as she walks in. “You’re funny.” She gently pokes me in the stomach, eyes briefly meeting mine as she strolls on past. I lock the door. “I brought wine.” She holds up the bottle. “Wine opener?”

I take the bottle, letting our fingers touch. She has makeup on, and the lip gloss accentuates her full gorgeous mouth, which excites me. Her low-cut shirt reveals the tops of her breasts, and those tight jeans fit to perfection. “I’ve got you.” I walk toward the study with Sam hot on my trail.

“You think so, huh?”

I like that she’s flirting. That one drink has kicked in enough for me to feel like I’ve got whatever life throws at me right now. I keep walking, letting my shoulders rise into a slow shrug with a smile spreading across my face. She can wonder what I’m thinking. I’m good with that.

The study is dim with the only light coming from the closed blinds. I stop at the wet bar to open the pinot noir. I hand her a full glass then pour myself another whiskey. When I turn around, Sam’s sitting on the sofa. Her eyes fixed on me.

“I have a confession,” she says. “I had a drink before texting you. Liquid courage and all.”

“Are you feeling courageous?” I sit next to her, propping my arm against the back of the couch so that I’m turned to give her my full attention.

Sam lifts the wineglass to her lips and takes a hefty swallow. “Olivia was upset because you guys had to cancel. My mom took her out for frozen yogurt and a movie.”

“I’m so sorry.” I place my drink on the table. “I would have loved to—”

Sam pushes me back against the couch as she moves into my arms, her mouth finding mine.

I moan into the unexpected kiss, enjoying the weight of her body as she moves to straddle me.

My hands instantly find her shapely ass as she holds my jaw, deepening the kiss.

Her tongue brushes mine before pulling my bottom lip into her mouth.

I pull her body closer, relishing the contact.

Sam releases my mouth as she lifts her body up, rubbing her breasts across my face.

I kiss her through the shirt, loving how her cleavage feels.

She caught me by surprise, but I’m up to taking advantage of what’s offered.

I lift Sam up to lay her down on the couch underneath me.

As our lips meet again, I push my thigh between her legs.

She moves more urgently now as her body surges up against mine.

We rock against each other, our tongues tangling.

I sit up, pulling my shirt over my head and releasing my bra. There are entirely too many clothes between us. Sam’s eyes find my breasts. Her eyes darken with desire as she runs her hands across my full breasts. I tilt my head back with the intensity of the moment.

“God, you’re beautiful,” Sam says, sliding me backward to take a nipple into her mouth. I hold on to the back of her head as she makes her way to the other side.

I grab the bottom of Sam’s shirt and before lifting it, our eyes meet. “Are you sure?” I ask, as I hold my hands steady, waiting for the answer I hope for.

She reaches down, placing her hands underneath mine. It’s then that I realize maybe I moved too fast. What the hell was I thinking?

Sam moves my hands as she pulls her shirt over her head in a fast swoop, then unsnaps her bra.

I watch the black lace fall onto the floor.

Her breasts are as magnificent as I imagined.

The perfect size. Round and perky. Her tanned skin etches a memory that I’ll never forget.

Sam places my hand on her breast, encouraging me to squeeze the soft skin beneath.

“A thousand times, yes.” Her voice is low, thick with want.

I pull her close, deepening the kiss as I work at the buttons of her pants, impatient to feel more of her. When they finally give, I slide them down, taking in every inch of her.

“Off,” Sam orders, pointing to my pants, as she slides out of her panties. I do as I’m told.

The body beneath me is breathtaking. I press our naked bodies together, bringing about a gasp.

Our breasts press together as I press my thigh into her wet center.

Sam moves her body with mine while her lips frantically find me.

Our rhythm is flawless as her tongue slides over mine.

I move my hand between us, finding the smoothness.

She’s so wet. I massage slowly at first, sliding up and down before moving lower.

Sam urges me in as I get closer and closer each time.

Finally, I move inside as my pelvis lies against my hand, thrusting forward in and out again and again.

With each push, Sam breathes a little harder until she calls out.

Grabbing my ass, she pulls me deeper inside, wrapping her leg around me.

“Oh, god!” Sam says into my ear, still holding me inside her. My body’s vibrating. I try to slow my breathing. I feel like I’ll bust with the slightest touch.

Sam pushes my body up as she slides down lower between my legs.

I grab the back of the couch for stability as her tongue finds the spot I long for.

My knee keeps me balanced as I straddle her head.

When she slides inside me while sucking my clit, I throw my head back in ecstasy.

I climb over the top of an already collapsing mountain.

I hold on for as long as I can before grabbing her hand to stop.

I fall back onto the couch. Sam grabs the throw blanket draped over the back and crawls in front of me, our faces inches apart. My pulse quickens as I search her eyes. A flicker of caution crosses my mind, but it’s no match for the pull I feel toward her.

“It was everything I imagined it would be with you,” Sam says. She runs her fingers gently across my bottom lip. Her eyes drop down to my breasts. That tantalizing finger follows, making circles around my breast.

“Off the charts.” I tilt her chin up to kiss those irresistible lips again.

“You’re only the second woman that I’ve ever been with,” Sam confesses.

“Oh.”

“I’ve always known that I’ve preferred women but never had the courage until recently to acknowledge it.”

“Is that why you and Olivia’s dad divorced?”

“I loved him, but I was never in love. That wasn’t fair to either of us.”

I find Sam’s hand and hold it against my chest. “It’s a brave thing to do. To be honest with yourself. The courage it took to decide that you both deserve happiness in every way.”

“Thank you for saying that.” Sam runs her fingers down my cheek. “I want you to know where I am in life.”

“Well,” I say, pulling Sam’s lower body closer to mine. She moans as she moves freely. “The universe knew I needed this moment, and it did not disappoint.”

Sam grinds against my leg before pushing herself up on top of me. “I’ve been thinking about doing this since we first met.” Sam’s hair touches the sides of my face as she moves against me. “You’re the most gorgeous woman.” She kisses the top of my nose. “I’m sure I could never get enough of you.”

I grab her ass as we begin grinding. She sits up more fully, turning slightly as she lowers herself completely against me to meet our centers. She slides back and forth into the smoothness we created. With my knee bent, she grabs hold to go faster.

The doorbell rings three times back-to-back.

“Fuck!” I say quietly, as we continue, not letting it interrupt our rhythm. Sam’s urgently pushing into me. She’s intoxicating with her head tilted forward, her hand squeezing my breast.

“Come with me, baby,” she says as the doorbell goes off again. She calls out as her movements slow. I topple over, feeling my orgasm take control at the same time. Our legs squeeze together, holding us close.

Ding-dong it rings again. Then, a knock on the door.

“Are you kidding me?” Leaving a goddesslike body behind, I move off the couch and scramble to gather my clothes.

“Could it be the girls?” Sam’s voice is altered as she breathes hard.

“If it is, then something’s wrong. They haven’t been gone that long.” I throw my clothes on quickly as I rush out of the room. Both of our phones are in the living room, so we wouldn’t have known if someone called or not.

When I make it to the door and swing it wide, two teenage girls are just walking away.

They turn when they hear me. The cheerleaders have on their school uniforms, one holding a board.

Well, shit! They’re selling something. After spending a good minute listening to the spiel about needing help for their school, I donate money just to get them to go away.

“If you had a doorbell camera, we could still be having fun.” Sam smiles as I walk back to find her sitting in the living room, fully clothed, a drink in her hand.

“Well…” I point to the glass. “Now you can finish the wine you started.”

On cue, she takes a sip. “Yeah, but not as tasty.” She meets my eyes.

I’m not one to blush, but that coming from her was incredibly sexy.

I sit down next to her. “You’re adorable when you blush.

” Sam’s voice is low. She has a bright smile plastered across her face.

“I’m going to have to do that more often. ”

I pick up my whiskey and point toward her face. “You’re flushed yourself.”

“I imagine it’s because of the mind-blowing sex we just had.”

My laugh is instant. “You surprise me.”

“Stick around. I have more in store.” Sam lifts her wine to her lips, a playful glint in her eyes as I watch, unable to look away.

She sets her glass aside and climbs over to straddle me once more.

Slow and certain, her lips find mine again.

There’s a hint of fruit on her tongue, sweet and lingering, as we work our mouths together in divine perfection.

She pulls back just enough to meet my gaze, her eyes bright with excitement, and her lips soft and pink. “What time are the girls getting back?”

The sparkle I see lets me know she’s not done with me yet. I have no complaints.
