Chapter 8 #4

“Unfortunately,” She admitted as she pushed her plate away and reached for her glass of cold water. She took a sip and then cleared her throat before she proceeded. “I wish I wasn't, but I am and probably always will be.”

“Why is that unfortunate? He a fuck nigga?” Lucas’s curiosity was piqued.

“No,” Evie released a heavy sigh as she reached for her napkin to wipe the corners of her mouth. “But we had a disagreement years back, and shits just been complicated between us ever since.”

“Welp,” Lucas began as he finished his food, grabbed his napkin, and cleaned his mouth before he pushed his own plate aside and gave Evie his undivided attention.

“I genuinely hope the shit works out for you. But I ain’t even gon’ hold you; I wish I was the nigga you was in love with.

I ain’t trippin’ though. I’on want nobody that ain’t hung up on me.

But next lifetime, you better believe I'm on ya ass. You gon’ meet me and fall in love wit’ me and we gon’ be together every lifetime after that.

I already pulled the big man upstairs aside and told him what was what. ”

“Oh,” she laughed. “And he agreed to take orders from you about the situation?”

“Yea, he did; that shit is called favor.”

“Oh okay. I’on even think it works like that, but I guess all that matters is that you believe it.

” Evie cackled as she shook her head at the man’s foolishness.

“Well, thank you for giving me a glimpse into my future lifetime. And for breakfast. But I really need to get going. Can you please do me a favor and grab my pink glamaholic duffle from the back of my van?”

“Yeah, I got you, but before I do, I need to give you something you left behind last time we were together,” he said as she stood from the stool and crossed the kitchen to grab the white envelope from the counter by the back window. “Here,” he handed it to her as she stood, eyeing him in confusion.

Evie slowly ran a hand across the beautiful, cursive lettering of her name, then turned the envelope over and ripped it open.

Her eyes bugged out at the check that was inside, in the amount of twenty thousand dollars.

Smacking her lips in annoyance, she closed the envelope and handed it back to him.

“No, Lucas. I’m not taking this damn check. What is wrong with you?”

“What’s wrong wit’ me?” He frowned. “What’s wrong wit’ you?

” he asked as he slapped her hand away. “You left the check behind years ago, so I wrote you a new one this morning. I really wanted to invest in your dream back then, and even though you're up and running now, I still want you to have the money. Use it to help grow ya shit even more. I’m proud of you, Evie. Let me do this.”

Shaking her head, Evie tossed the check on the counter and started back toward the bedroom. Though before she could get far, Lucas snatched her up, carried her over to the couch, and sat down with her in his lap. “The fuck is your problem, Evie?”

“Lucas,” she shook her head as disappointment settled on her face. “I can’t take that damn money from you.”

“Yes, you can.”

It doesn’t feel right. She tried to slip out of his lap, but he secured his hold on her waist. “I can’t take that check and?—"

“Evie, baby,” Lucas grabbed her by the chin and made her face him.

“Listen to me, ain’t no strings attached to that check.

I care about you, and I just wanna see you win.

And I ain't saying that you ain’t already winning, but I remember when your business was just a dream.

I remember encouraging you to make that shit a reality.

I remember you struggling with whether to tell your parents that your heart wasn’t in dentistry.

I remember the sketches of the van and the store.

I remember your prayers and tears of being rejected for loans.

I remember all the obstacles you told me you’d have to come up against, and you crushed them bitches because look at you now.

Take that money and do something else great with it.

I love you, and if I can’t be with you, I at least wanna help you get to whatever the next level of your dream is. Please, Evie, take the money, baby.”

Instead of responding, Evie kissed him instead.

And she didn’t stop kissing him until he had her ass back over that couch and was beating the bottom out of her pussy again.

Lucas fucked and fed her until moonlight replaced the sunlight.

When Evie finally pulled out of his driveway just after midnight, she was all smiles.

She’d been thoroughly fucked and catered to for the last day and a half, and she had twenty thousand bucks to invest in her business. The cloud she was on felt phenomenal.

When she arrived home, Evie went straight to the bathroom, ran a tub of bathwater, made herself a lemon drop, grabbed her Kindle and a joint, and, while Sade played in the background, after she slid into the tub and lit up, she powered her phone off just as Norie’s name lit up her screen.

A smile hiked her cheeks up to the high heavens as she tossed her phone onto the bamboo tray in front of her and took a sip of her drink.

Evie wasn’t about to allow a single soul to fuck up this good-ass high she was on.

She’d deal with reality later. Right now, her “me time” was all that mattered.

And she was going to relish it for as long as she could.
