Chapter 3 - Echo
I open the door to Phoenix's office and immediately feel the weight of suspicious eyes landing on us.
Everyone is here. The entire club plus the women. Waiting.
They've cleaned up since we got back. No more blood spatter, fresh clothes, weapons stowed. But there's still that edge of adrenaline in the air. The aftermath of war. We just burned down the Vipers' clubhouse, killed most of their members, ended a conflict that's been going on for a while.
And now I'm walking together with a woman carrying my eight-month-old son.
The silence is heavy. Nobody moves. Nobody speaks.
Phoenix stands near the bar with Ivy tucked against his side. She's small and curvy with auburn hair cut short, green eyes bright with curiosity. His arm is around her waist, protective in that way Phoenix always is with her.
Judge sits on one of the couches with Nora beside him and Grace on his lap. The little girl is five, deaf, communicating in sign language with her mother.
Canvas is finally sitting down, leg propped up, while Eden, his old lady, fusses over the bandage on his thigh.
She's curvy with long dark hair and bright blue eyes, wearing scrubs like she just came from the hospital.
Which she probably did. She's a trauma nurse.
Looks up at us and her expression softens immediately when she sees the baby.
Brick stands near the wall with Rosie tucked under his arm. She's got long brunette hair with blunt bangs, curves that Brick's hand spans entirely. She's staring at Hannah like she recognizes something, another woman who ran out of options and ended up here, probably.
Wraith is on the other couch with Quinn beside him and his daughter Mariah on his lap.
Quinn has her hair in pigtails today, soft and approachable-looking until you remember she's ex-military and can disable a man twice her size.
Mariah, five years old with dark curls, is already wiggling to get down and see the baby.
Ranger stands near the bar. Saint is beside him, still wearing his medical pack. Diesel leans against the doorframe to the kitchen. All three of them single, all three of them watching this unfold with varying degrees of interest.
Hannah's hand tightens in mine. I can feel her shaking. Can feel how badly she wants to run.
I give her hand a gentle squeeze. She doesn't run.
"Everyone," I say. The room goes even more silent than before, if that's possible. "This is Hannah Reese. And this—" I gesture to the baby she's holding, "—is Theo. My son."
The words feel strange coming out of my mouth. *My son.* Two words I never thought I'd say. Never planned to say. But here they are, true and undeniable.
Phoenix is the first to move. He crosses the room slowly, Ivy following a step behind. Stops a few feet away and looks at Theo, then at me, then at Hannah.
"Older than five months, right?" he asks.
"Yes," Hannah says. Her voice is steadier than I expected.
"And you're just telling Echo now?"
"I thought I could handle it alone."
Ivy reaches out and touches his arm gently. They exchange a look, that wordless communication couples develop. He nods slightly.
"I apologize. You're welcome here," Phoenix says to Hannah. "Both of you. Echo's family is our family. Whatever you need, you've got it."
Hannah's eyes go wide. "I… Thank you. I don't want to be a burden. We'll only stay until—"
"You'll stay as long as you need to," Phoenix interrupts gently. "That's not up for debate."
Ivy steps around Phoenix and smiles at Hannah. "Hi. I'm Ivy. Phoenix's old lady." She gestures to Theo. "Can I see him? I love babies."
Hannah hesitates, then nods. Ivy moves closer and makes cooing noises at Theo, who stares at her with his docile gray eyes.
"Oh my God, he has Echo's eyes exactly," Ivy says. She looks at me. "That's wild. He's perfect."
The ice breaks after that. The women descend on Hannah like a protective wall, forming a barrier between her and the overwhelming presence of nine bikers.
Nora stands with Grace, teaching Hannah a few basic signs.
Eden asks medical questions about Theo's condition.
Rosie hovers close, clearly seeing a kindred spirit in another woman who ran out of options.
Quinn stays back slightly but watches everything with her usual military awareness.
Mariah finally breaks free from Wraith's lap and runs over. "Is that a baby?" she asks loudly.
"Yes," Hannah says, smiling for the first time since she arrived. "His name is Theo."
"I'm Mariah. I'm five. Can I hold him?"
"Maybe when he's a little less fussy," Hannah says. "He's tired."
"I get tired too," Mariah announces. "My dad says that's normal for kids."
Wraith walks over and scoops Mariah up before she can launch into one of her legendary monologues. "Give them some space, sweetheart."
The men hang back, letting the women do what they do best: make someone feel welcome. Phoenix catches my eye and jerks his head toward the bar. I follow him, Brick and Judge trailing behind.
"You want to explain what the hell just happened?" Judge asks quietly once we're out of immediate earshot.
I lean against the bar and cross my arms. "I met Hannah years ago. Sacred Heart Orphanage. We were kids. Lost touch when she got moved. Reconnected a while ago through a mutual friend."
"And you didn't think to mention you were seeing someone?" Brick asks.
"Wasn't seeing her. Not officially. It was..." I search for words. "Complicated. We had history. We talked. It became something more. Then it ended."
"When did it end?" Phoenix asks.
"Around a year and a half ago."
They all do the math. Phoenix's expression doesn't change but I can see him processing. "She was pregnant when she left."
"Didn't know it yet," I say. "Found out two weeks later. Didn't tell me."
"Why not?" Judge's voice has an edge. He doesn't tolerate people keeping secrets, especially about kids. He's got Nora and Grace now and takes fatherhood seriously.
"She was scared. Thought she could handle it alone. Same reasons anyone from our background does anything. She didn't know how to ask for help." I look at Hannah across the room. She's holding Theo while Eden examines him gently, checking his color, his breathing. "Didn't know I'd want to help."
"And now?" Phoenix asks.
"Now she's here because Theo is sick. Heart condition. He needs surgery in two weeks. She's out of money and out of options. Came to me because she didn't have anywhere else to go."
Brick's expression hardens. "How sick?"
"Serious. Congenital heart defect. Needs a pediatric cardiac surgeon and ongoing treatment. Surgery costs forty-two thousand total. She's raised eighteen. I wrote her a check for the full amount."
"Good," Phoenix says immediately. "Family comes first. Always."
Judge nods. "She staying here?"
"I told her she was. She tried to argue. I insisted."
"She'll need a room set up," Brick says, already planning. That's what he does. He sees a problem, figures out how to solve it. "Crib, baby supplies, whatever she needs."
"Canvas and I can run to the store," Eden calls from across the room. Apparently she's been listening. "Get basics. Diapers, wipes, formula if she needs it, baby clothes."
"I'm breastfeeding," Hannah says, looking overwhelmed. "But I'll need somewhere to pump when I'm not with him. And diapers, yes. Size three. And wipes. And maybe some toys? He's starting to grab at everything."
"We'll get it all," Eden promises. "Don't worry."
Canvas stands up despite his injured leg. "I'm fine to drive. Stop looking at me like that, Saint."
Saint just shakes his head and doesn't argue. He knows Canvas well enough by now to know when it's pointless.
Ivy is already on her phone. "There's a baby store twenty minutes away. Opens in twenty minutes. We can get a crib delivered same-day if we order online."
"I can pay you back," Hannah says quickly. "For all of this. Once I get on my feet again, I'll—"
"You're not paying us back," Rosie interrupts. She's got that look on her face, the one that says she understands exactly what Hannah is feeling because she's been there. "You're part of the family now. That's what Echo just told everyone. Family doesn't pay family back for helping."
Hannah looks at me across the room. There's something in her eyes: gratitude mixed with fear she's trying not to feel. I nod slightly. She takes a shaky breath and nods back.
Theo starts crying. Full volume now, the kind of cry that says he's done with all of this and needs a nap immediately.
Hannah bounces him. "He needs to sleep. Is there somewhere I can put him down?"
"Guest room upstairs," Phoenix says. "Judge, show her which one."
Judge stands and gestures for Hannah to follow. Nora goes with them, Grace signing something that makes her mother smile.
The three of them disappear up the stairs.
As soon as they're gone, the entire atmosphere in the room changes. The women cluster together, already planning shopping trips and nursery setups. The men turn to face me with expressions that range from curious to concerned.
"So," Diesel says slowly. "You're a dad."
"Yeah."
"How you feeling about that?" Ranger asks.
I think about the question. Really think about it. How do I feel about suddenly being a father to an eight-month-old I didn't know existed until an hour ago?
Terrified. Overwhelmed. Completely unprepared.
But also, something else. Something I don't have words for. The moment I held Theo and he grabbed my finger with those tiny fists, looking at me with my own eyes, something awakened inside me. Something permanent.
"Like I'd kill anyone who tried to hurt him," I finally say.
Brick grins. "That's the right answer."
Saint moves closer, medical bag still on his shoulder. "What's the specific diagnosis? I want to know what we're dealing with medically."
"Congenital heart defect. She said it's serious, but I don't know the exact type. You should ask her."
"I will." Saint is already in doctor mode. "After the surgery, he's going to need monitoring. I can handle most of that here if she's comfortable with it. Save her some trips to the hospital."
"She'll appreciate that," I say.
Phoenix is watching me with that look he gets when he's trying to figure out if I'm okay. We've known each other for three years. He knows I don't talk about feelings. Knows I process everything internally. Knows I'm probably freaking out right now even though my expression hasn't changed.
"You good?" he asks.
"Ask me in a week," I say.
He nods. "Fair enough. But for what it's worth, you're going to be fine. Being a dad isn't about being prepared. It's about showing up. And you've never failed to show up for anything that matters."
Something loosens slightly in my chest. "Thanks."
"Besides," Canvas adds, limping over to join the group. "You've got all of us. Wraith's already been through the baby phase. Judge is basically raising Grace. We know what we're doing."
"Speak for yourself," Diesel mutters. "I don't know shit about babies."
"Then don't hold him," Brick says flatly.
Wraith comes over with Quinn beside him. "The kid has your eyes. That's going to be weird for a while."
"Tell me about it."
"Also," Quinn adds, "Hannah looks terrified. Of this place, of us, probably of what asking for help means. I recognize that look. I had it when I showed up here."
"What helped?" I ask.
"Dean and my brother being steady. Not pushing. Letting me take things at my own pace." She glances at Wraith. "And the other women. They made me feel less alone."
"They're already doing that," I observe. Across the room, Ivy, Eden, and Rosie are deep in conversation, presumably about baby supplies and room arrangements.
Judge comes back downstairs alone. "Hannah's getting Theo down for a nap. Nora's helping. The room's at the end of the hall, north side. Quietest spot in the building."
"Good," Phoenix says. "Let's get it properly set up today. Whatever she needs."
"I'll make a list," Ivy says, looking up from her phone. "Canvas, Eden, you're on shopping duty. Get everything on this list. Don't skip anything."
Canvas mock-salutes. "Yes ma'am."
Eden rolls her eyes but she's smiling. They head for the door, Canvas grabbing keys despite still limping.
The door closes behind them and I'm left standing in the clubhouse surrounded by my brothers and their old ladies, trying to process the fact that my entire life just changed in the span of two hours.
We attacked the Vipers. Burned their clubhouse. Ended a war.
And I became a father.
Wraith claps me on the shoulder. "Welcome to the club within the club. Being a dad is the hardest thing you'll ever do. But you've got this."
I look at him, this man who thrives on violence, but who fell for Quinn so hard he rebuilt himself into someone capable of loving someone else other than his kid. If he can do it, maybe I can too.
"Yeah," I say. "Maybe I do."
Upstairs, I hear Theo crying. Then Hannah's soft voice soothing him. Then silence as he settles.
My son. My family.
Phoenix is right. This isn't about being prepared. It's about showing up.
And I've never walked away from anything that mattered.
I'm not starting now.
