MICAH #2

“It’s just a scratch,” I said, waving it off.

Ignoring me, he hit his speed dial and lifted the phone to his ear.

“You know that demons carry venom in their claws, who’s to say you won’t drop dead in an hour?

” Brayden said as he waited for whoever to pick up the phone.

“Professor Creed, it’s Brayden. Micah got scratched by a lesser demon. Do we need to have him come in?”

Brayden paused to listen to the answer, he gave Creepy Creedy the description of the demon, said yes and no a few times, then hung up. “Looks like you’ll live, it was a scouting demon, not a lethal one.”

“So, you're telling me I’m gonna live,” I said, rolling my eyes in mock relief. “Looks like you’re stuck with me for a while longer.”

“Shut up, come on, we still have a lot of ground to cover,” Brayden said, walking past me and punching me in my unwounded shoulder.

The rest of our patrol was uneventful, and when it reached midnight we decided to head back.

I never picked early classes, but Brayden was one of those strange early-bird-who-gets-the-worm guys, so he had a class at seven.

Before we left, I popped the trunk and pulled out the first aid kit to wrap my arm so I wouldn’t get any blood on my leather seats.

Brayden helped me tie it off, tired of watching me struggle with it.

“Hey, did that chick ever text you?” I asked once we got back in the car and headed back to school.

“No, but I’ve seen her in passing at school. It looks like she’s in deep with her studies. Always has her nose in a book,” Brayden said, shrugging his shoulders.

Out of the five of us, Brayden and Parker had the biggest following of girls, but I was surprised to find out just how many fans Hudson had.

With the way Jay avoided attention, I’m not sure that anyone knew he was even attending classes at school.

I tried to follow in his footsteps, but somehow, I also managed to have a fan group.

I tried everything in my power to ignore them, but they still left notes and things for me in my mailbox.

That’s why I had to resort to hiding out in the special archives room if I wanted to be left alone on the main campus.

“Maybe she’s more of an in-person girl, she could be like you and suck at technology.” I grinned, looking over at him.

“I can manage a phone just fine. It’s when it comes to computers that I have a problem. When I run into problems, I just have our resident tech mogul fix it for me,” Brayden said.

“At least Parker’s good for one thing,” I said, pulling into my parking spot in the teacher parking area.

“Not all of us can own a country and have family ties with powerful political figures,” Brayden countered, smirking at me.

“Whatever. It’s not like I’ve even been to the country I own.

My extended family won’t let me have access to any of my inheritance, except the money.

Once I turn twenty-one, everything will finally be made available for me to look over,” I said, irritated with the fight that my aunt and I had before school started.

“Hey man, I didn’t mean to hit a sore subject,” Brayden said, gripping my shoulder in an apology.

“It’s fine, I didn’t tell you about the fight with Aunt Muriel,” I said, shaking him off and slapping him on the back, letting him know we were good.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw what looked like a naked child run around the corner of a building. “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me. What have Jay and Hudson been doing all night?”

I took off in the direction that I’d seen the little demon disappear, knowing Brayden would follow.

The little bastard was fast as it zigzagged around buildings, sticking to the shadows.

Just when I thought I’d caught up to it, I lost sight of it.

When it reappeared, it was running across the road toward Ashfall Hall.

“Brayden, the dorm,” I called as I shot off after it.

Brayden tried to box it in, but the demon sprouted wings and flew.

We couldn’t do anything too noticeable right in front of the biggest dorm, that had floor-to-ceiling windows.

The demon flew the rest of the way to the dorm with us tracking its every move.

It managed to find a small open window in what I guessed was a bathroom.

“We need to get inside; looks like it’s on the third floor. Do you know if that was the girls’ side, or the guys’?” Brayden asked as he swiped his keycard through the reader, unlocking the door.

“How would I know? That would be something Parker would know; I never visit the dorms,” I snapped, yanking the door open and jogging over to the stairs on the right-hand side.

This was the one time I would ever thank Liam for making us train on the stair machine all the time. I took the steps two at a time until we made it to the third floor.

“Let’s spread out, you go right, I’ll go left. Text once one of us kills the little shit,” I whispered harshly, short of breath.

Brayden nodded and took off. I walked quickly down to the end of the hall, where I found the bathroom.

I was hoping that it was still trapped in there and couldn’t manage the door latch.

I turned the knob slowly until I heard screaming.

Girls burst out of the bathroom, knocking me out of the way.

Guess it’s the girls’ side. I waited till the stampede of girls passed, and then I ducked through the door.

The demon was fighting off a wet towel that someone had apparently thrown at it.

It tried to dart past me, but I tossed a fireball without thinking and watched as it hit the towel, bursting it into flames and causing the fire alarm to go off.

The high-pitched blaring of the alarm threw the demon off, causing it to freeze in its tracks, and giving me the chance to run my sword through it.

Wiping the water out of my face, I looked around the bathroom at all the sprinklers going off.

“Beth is going to skin me alive for this,” I muttered as I trudged my way out of the bathroom. My clothes were soaked through. Thankfully, the rest of the building didn’t have the sprinklers on, but all the girls were emerging bleary-eyed from their rooms to evacuate the building.

I found Brayden waiting for me in the lobby, and we walked out together into the crowd of sleepy students. We tried to weave our way through the mass to head back to Aiden House, when I crashed right into a blonde-haired, blue-eyed, rose-scented woman.

Fuck my life.
