MICAH

SIX

Thank God she didn’t run.

When I got the text that she didn’t show up for her psych class with Nona, I feared the worst. Brayden had told me he was going to check in on her to make sure she was really handling things okay.

I just didn’t picture that would involve her on his lap and his tongue down her throat.

Jealousy roared in me at how easily he could be around her.

How he was just letting his power draw her to him without a worry.

I had decided long ago I wasn’t going to be attached to someone, especially if I didn’t know if I could be with them forever.

Out of everything that we’ve told Lailah, our little gift from the angels, we didn’t go over the most important part.

“We all got a text from Nona when Lailah didn’t show up for class. Apparently, they were supposed to meet about the new elemental classes assigned to her. So when she didn’t show up, Beth freaked and sent us all out to look for her,” I said, letting my irritation sharpen my words.

“I didn’t miss class; it was on the syllabus that today was an optional day. Beth never told me I was meeting with Professor Whittemore,” Lailah said, tugging at Brayden’s arms to let her go.

I could tell from his face he didn’t want her to move, but he gave in when she insisted.

Look how everyone is blind to the hold she has on us.

I may not have been able to avoid being around her now that we needed to train together, but I wasn’t going to be her lap dog. She had Brayden and Parker for that.

“Yeah, well, Beth is on high alert when it comes to you, so why don’t you make it easier on all of us and just stick to the normal routine. I don’t have time in my day to keep hunting you down when you decide to get frisky.”

Lailah stomped up to me, her crystal eyes alight with anger. For reasons I couldn’t explain, I loved to see the fire in her, so I pushed her buttons just so I could see it. My need to push people away by pissing them off seemed to have the opposite effect on Lailah, drawing her to me even more.

“Fuck you, Micah. It’s not your life that just imploded two days ago, so shut the hell up.

Brayden was kind enough to check on me and give me the chance to feel like my world isn’t crumbling around me.

He’s supposedly your best friend, so maybe you should get your head out of your ass and see he’s taking the time to look out for someone besides you.

Stop getting jealous over it and leave. You found me, so just back off,” Lailah snapped, her chest heaving with the exertion of her tantrum.

“You think I’m jealous because he’s spending time with you?

” I asked, scrunching up my face at her accusation.

“I’m not a twelve-year-old girl. Brayden is allowed to do whatever the hell he wants.

What I have a problem with is the fact that you can’t seem to stay out of trouble, and we keep having to bail you out. ”

“Forgive me for not knowing that I was being targeted by demons because I’m a Blessed Warrior from the heavens.

I didn’t get a training manual like some people, or grow up around people who knew what was really going on in the world,” she huffed as hurt flashed across her face before her anger covered it.

“From now on, I will try to be less of an inconvenience for you, so that I don’t disturb your life further. ”

My anger at her words flared. I balled my hands into fists, trying to keep from letting my power take over at my volatile emotions.

She didn’t understand how I was feeling at all.

I needed to walk away, or I was going to do or say something that I was going to regret. Spinning on my heel, I stormed away, ignoring Brayden calling after me. I pulled out my cell to text everyone that she was fine and with Brayden so they could call off the search.
