LAILAH #2
“Cami, get your face out of my girlfriend’s boobs. That’s a low blow, even for you,” Micah growled, stalking over to her.
Cami dropped her arms and backed away slowly before sticking her tongue out at him. “You’re just jealous because I’m the perfect height to use them as pillows when I hug her.”
Micah swept me up, wrapping my legs around his waist with his hand holding my ass and kissed the hell out of me. I let out a little squeak before I melted into him and curled my fingers into his hair that was pulled up.
“Okay, okay, you two, no making out while there’s an instructor present,” Tony grumbled.
“I take it you’re still single, Tony?” Micah asked as he let me down.
Tony gave him a look that would have made a weaker man flinch. “You still a dick?”
Micah chuckled and shrugged his shoulders in answer.
“Now, for the rest of you lot, we’ll need to go into one of the warded training rooms so we don’t have your powers bringing this place down around our ears,” Tony said, waving for us to follow him.
“Cami, I think it’s best if we keep this a closed event, hit the showers and I’ll see you tomorrow for training. ”
Down another hall in the Water section, there were six steel doors with warning lights on the outside to show if the room was in use or not.
Tony took us to the last one and opened the door for us to enter.
When I stepped inside, I could feel the hum of an electric current running along my skin, raising the hair on the back of my neck.
The room itself was lined with black steel paneling on the walls with different symbols and phrases written on them in white.
When I brushed my fingers over one of them, I felt a zap like I’d gotten a static shock.
“This whole room is covered in wards to stop our powers from leaking outside. It takes a little to get used to it, but soon you won’t even notice the energy dampeners,” Hudson shared as he stood next to me. “This is our team training room; the others are for single use and are much smaller.”
Taking in the rest of the room, I noticed a white circle drawn on the floor that a circus could use for its performances.
It made sense, though, that this was larger, since the five of them needed to work on things together—well, now six of us.
It did make me feel much better knowing that I would be able to safely practice my powers with Nona and not have to worry about things getting crazy.
“In the interest of being fair, I picked the pairings for the first round: Micah and Parker, Jay and Lailah, Hudson and Brayden,” Tony announced.
“What?!” Micah snapped. “Lailah isn’t doing this; she doesn’t even know how to fight!”
Tony just rolled his eyes at Micah. “That is why I have her with Jay. I want to see what her instinctual reactions to things are. Her powers will protect her if she trusts them to do so.”
Micah muttered under his breath, but he let the issue go.
“Lailah, why don’t you and Jay go first so that we can get it over with and everyone can calm down,” Tony suggested, motioning to the ring.
Taking a deep, calming breath, I stepped into the circle, and Jay joined me. When we were both inside, he said some complicated phrase that sounded like Latin, and the hum in the room got louder as the white outline glowed and then settled once more.
“I activated the ring so we can’t harm anyone outside of this circle,” Jay mentioned as he stood in the middle.
“The plan is that I will use simple attacks on you to see how your power responds on its own. All you need to do is trust that it will keep you safe and give into what your gut tells you to do.”
Nodding, I took a moment to center myself and let my power flow through my body, ready and waiting for me to use it.
Jay took a step back, gathering a swirling ball of wind in his hand, and hurled it at me.
Instantly, I had my sai in my hands crossed in front of me, blocking his attack while the wind buffeted against me.
I could feel my feet slipping on the concrete floor as the wind pushed against me.
I needed to dispel it before it would dissipate.
My power flowed down my arms and seeped into the sai, causing them to glow and pulse a bright shade of gold, causing the attack to poof out of existence.
Then Jay was there in my space wrapping me up in a tornado of sorts, but my power wrapped me up in a golden bubble and pushed out against the wind until it once again caused it to dissipate.
Time and time again, Jay attacked, and I muddled my way through getting out of each situation, but the common theme was I could shield against them and my powers could break apart his spell once it touched my shield.
“Okay, Lailah, now try and attack Jay. Even if it’s just to push him away when he gets too close,” Tony called out.
I was panting, and sweat soaked through my shirt with the amount of power I’d been using. I wasn’t even sure I’d be able to put that much strength behind an attack. Jay, true to who he was, didn’t give me a chance to doubt myself and charged at me.
I was terrified to hurt him, and my tank was running on empty.
So what did my power do?
It decided to pull from Jay, causing him to crash into me, knocking us to the floor, when I couldn’t move out of the way fast enough.
His energy surged into me, and I could feel him panic ever so slightly, but it was enough that I felt him taking the last of what power I had left, trying to compensate for what I was taking from him.
This turned us into an endless cycle of power flowing between the two of us until it seemed that my golden power mixed into his silver, creating this beautiful energy between us.
His lips found mine, and I couldn’t resist him, letting his hand grab onto my hair and pull my head back so he could deepen the kiss.
My arms and legs wrapped around him until I was practically fused to him from lips to groin.
Power pulsed between us as a pure white light surrounded us and a voice echoed through the air, causing us to break apart.
“Jalen Minh, Knight blessed with Air’s power, Warrior for the angels, we accept your Oath and find you true and worthy.”
