LAILAH #2
Now I was grinning, knowing that with the recent update if you didn't turn off your location it would be sending out your location to your friends. I scrolled through his list and found her profile, so I knew what her avatar looked like and flipped to the map and sure enough there was her dot moving away from us on the interstate. Shooting to my feet I let out a shrill whistle that my dad taught me at one of Kyle’s hockey games.
Everyone snapped their heads to look and me as I held up the phone.
"They have her phone and are driving away, who's coming with me to chase it down?" I inquired.
Micah promptly hung up his call and shoved his phone in his pocket. "Let's roll."
Dylan tried to come with us, but I stopped him. "No, you need to stay here with Kyle and the others. You are the only one who can answer certain questions about her, they need you more."
He tried to argue but then let out a breath and sagged his shoulders. "Fine, but call Kyle the moment you know anything."
"Take Parker with you," Jay instructed.
I was glad that he didn't try to stop me because it was too dangerous.
We were a team and each of us needed to pull our weight.
This was my chance to do that. Micah, Brayden, Parker and I jogged out of the security office, got our hands stamped so we could get back in if we needed to, and booked it across the parking lot to the car.
Micah hit the button unlocking it and we all piled in, I took shotgun so I could give directions.
"We need to get on I94 south. It looks like they’re getting off on Belvidere Road, heading towards the lake," I shared, as I pulled up the nifty GPS this new SUV had.
Micah tore out of the parking lot, weaving around every car that was in our way like we were in the Indy five-hundred. Blowing through a red light we turned on what felt like two wheels onto the road that would get us to the highway.
"Man, you might want to slow it down just a touch so we don't get pulled over," Parker suggested.
"I don't see you driving, do I?" Micah growled. "You let me worry about shit like that and just hold on tight. We’re not going to lose her because we were too stupid to see if she had her phone on her."
"Enough!" I yelled. "We need to stay focused, this is no time to argue."
At that, everyone shut up.
"Take this to the next exit then get off and head east," I instructed. "They’re still on the same road and the traffic lights are slowing them down. It should help us gain some ground."
I tried not to look at how fast we were going, keeping my eyes locked on the moving dot that was Phoebe.
I trusted Micah with my life, so I needed to trust him to get us there alive and well enough to save her.
I spotted the exit and before I could say anything he was cutting across five lanes of traffic to get there, making more than one person honk and flip us the finger.
We made it just in time for a green light but I doubted that would have slowed Micah down one second.
Once more, with the weaving through cars, we were on Belvidere Road taking whatever risks he felt like he could.
"It looks like they’re heading for Sheridan Road and heading north."
I grabbed my phone and pulled up my map so I could look around to see if I could guess where they were heading.
"There is a fishing harbor with charter boats, a water treatment plant, generating station, and Illinois Beach State Park.
None of these jump out at me as a place demons would want to hold someone captive. "
"My money’s on the power plant," Parker spoke up. "Think about it, a huge factory to work out of and limited people working there. No one would go there unless they needed to. If I was going to run a secret demon body snatching ring, I would do it there."
"I agree, out of the choices that sounds as logical as any," Brayden added.
Micah let out a sharp laugh. "So we are just gonna go with that because Parker watches scary movies? I say the pier, if they have a boat there, it gives them the freedom to take her wherever they need to or cross state lines where no one will be looking for her."
"Both are fair suggestions, the docks are first up so we’ll know pretty soon if that's the case," I said, mediating the tension in the car.
Why on earth did Jay send Parker with us?
He knows that Micah and him don't work well together.
Too late now, I had to deal with things as they are and make the most of it.
Although Parker might not be the tactical one out of us, he was a skilled fighter and had a large amount of power backing him up.
"They passed the marina," I shared as we pulled onto the next road heading north. "Looks like the power plant might be the winner, unless they want to ditch her in the forest, making us all wrong."
No one seemed to appreciate my shot at levity and Micah just gave me a look out of the corner of his eye. This road wasn't quite so busy and had less traffic lights as we got into the industrial area, helping us pick up some speed.
"Bray, call Jay, let him know where we are and if he doesn't hear from us in twenty minutes we need help," Micah instructed.
Brayden pulled out his phone and dialed. "Good call. Hey Jay, we’re on…"
"Tell him we're at the Waukegan Generating Station," I interjected, turning in my seat. "That's where the dot stopped."
