Enchoes of the Jade Garden

Chapter 1 The Unforeseen Encounter

The last rays of the setting sun painted the palace terraces in shades of gold and crimson, casting long shadows across the marble walkways of the Tang Imperial Palace.

Beyond the towering walls, mist-covered mountains stretched endlessly toward the horizon, their peaks glowing beneath the evening sky.

Prince Li Wei Chen stood alone upon the highest terrace.

As heir to the empire, his days were consumed by military reports, court disputes, and endless lessons in governance.

At just twenty-four years of age, he had already earned a reputation throughout the kingdom as a brilliant strategist and a formidable warrior.

The ministers admired his intelligence, the generals respected his discipline, and his enemies feared his name.

Yet few dared to approach him.

His cold demeanour and sharp tongue had built invisible walls around his heart. While noble daughters dreamed of becoming his wife, none truly knew the man hidden beneath the mask of duty.

Tonight, weighed down by another exhausting day at court, Wei Chen sought refuge in solitude.

"Your Highness," one of the attendants called from behind him, bowing deeply. "The evening banquet is prepared."

"I will attend later," Wei Chen replied without turning around.

The attendant immediately lowered his head.

"As you command, Your Highness."

Once alone again, the Prince exhaled slowly.

The cool evening breeze carried the sweet fragrance of cherry blossoms from the gardens below. For the first time all day, the tension in his shoulders began to ease.

His gaze drifted toward the western terrace.

That was when he saw her.

A young palace lady stood quietly beside the marble balustrade. She appeared completely unaware of the world around her as she admired the sunset. Her pale green robes fluttered gently in the wind, while delicate jade ornaments sparkled within her dark hair.

She did not notice the prince watching her.

Instead, her attention was fixed upon a cherry blossom tree that leaned gracefully over the palace wall.

One by one, pink petals drifted through the air.

A small smile touched her lips.

The sight was strangely captivating.

Wei Chen found himself unable to look away.

It wasn't merely her beauty.

Many women in the palace were beautiful.

There was something else-something peaceful and genuine.

Unlike the nobles who constantly sought influence or favour, she seemed entirely content standing alone among the blossoms.

For reasons he could not explain, Wei Chen stepped forward.

The soft sound of his boots against the stone finally caught her attention.

She turned.

Their eyes met.

Time seemed to slow.

The distant sounds of servants, birds, and rustling leaves faded into silence.

For a brief moment, the entire world disappeared.

Su Yu Lan stared at the handsome stranger before her.

Although she immediately recognized the golden dragon embroidered upon his robes, she was too stunned to move.

The Crown Prince himself stood only a few paces away.

His striking features were well known throughout the palace, but rumors often described him as cold and unapproachable.

Yet the man standing before her now appeared different.

His intense gaze held neither arrogance nor authority.

Only curiosity.

Realizing her mistake, Yu Lan quickly lowered herself into a respectful bow.

"This servant greets Your Highness."

Wei Chen said nothing.

His eyes remained fixed on her.

Yu Lan nervously glanced upward.

"Your Highness?"

Only then did he realize he had been staring.

"You may rise."

"Thank you, Your Highness."

As she stood, an awkward silence settled between them.

Neither knew what to say.

Finally, Yu Lan looked toward the cherry blossom tree.

"The sunset is beautiful tonight."

The words escaped before she could stop herself.

Normally, one did not casually converse with royalty.

To her surprise, the prince followed her gaze.

"It is."

His voice was calm.

Not cold.

Not intimidating.

Simply calm.

Yu Lan relaxed slightly.

"When the blossoms fall like this," she said softly, "it feels as though the heavens are scattering petals across the world."

Wei Chen glanced at her.

Most people constantly praised him, flattered him, or sought his approval.

No one had ever spoken to him about something as simple as falling blossoms.

"And what do you see when you look at them?" he asked.

Yu Lan thought for a moment.

"Hope."

The answer surprised him.

"Hope?"

She nodded.

"Even though the flowers fall, new blossoms always return in spring. It reminds me that difficult seasons never last forever."

Wei Chen stared at the drifting petals.

Her words lingered in his mind.

For years, he had viewed life only through politics, warfare, and responsibility.

Hope was a luxury he had long forgotten.

A gentle breeze swept through the terrace.

Several blossoms drifted between them.

Without warning, one petal landed in Yu Lan's hair.

She reached for it, but Wei Chen was quicker.

His hand paused as he carefully removed the blossom.

Their fingers brushed.

Both froze.

The simple touch sent an unfamiliar warmth through the prince’s chest.

Yu Lan's heart suddenly raced.

For a moment, neither moved.

The evening air seemed charged with something neither could explain.

Wei Chen slowly opened his palm, revealing the flower petal.

"It seems even the blossoms favour you."

The words slipped from his mouth before he could stop them.

Yu Lan's cheeks warmed.

A shy smile appeared on her face.

The sight struck him harder than any battlefield victory.

For the first time in his life, the invincible Prince Li Wei Chen found himself at a loss for words.

As the sun finally disappeared beyond the mountains, lanterns throughout the palace began to glow one by one, illuminating the terrace in soft golden light.

Neither wished to leave.

Yet duty called them both.

The distant sound of a bell echoed across the palace grounds.

"The evening banquet," Wei Chen murmured.

Yu Lan bowed respectfully.

"I should return to my duties as well."

For reasons he could not explain, disappointment settled within him.

"Yu Lan."

She stopped.

Surprised, she turned back.

It was the first time he had spoken her name.

"Yes, Your Highness?"

Wei Chen looked at her beneath the lantern light.

"Will you visit this terrace again tomorrow evening?"

A smile brighter than the sunset blossomed across her face.

"If fate allows it, Your Highness."

With that, she turned and disappeared among the palace corridors.

Wei Chen remained standing there long after she had gone.

The terrace suddenly felt empty.

He looked down at the cherry blossom petal still resting in his hand.

Somewhere deep within his heart, something had changed.

For the first time, the brilliant prince who feared nothing found himself eagerly awaiting tomorrow.

And though neither of them knew it yet, that single encounter beneath the falling blossoms would become the beginning of a love destined to change the fate of the empire forever.
